I worked in every field I could find work in. Photography: doing little league photo's, weddings. Painting portraits people and pets too! I had to learn digital when I went for a job interview and did not get hired because I had NO Computer skills! Now semi retired, I am back to traditional Art methods! Watercolor painting and now soft pastels is something completely new to me! Just gotta keep trying to learn and grow!

I would highly recommend looking up game jams and joining one! They usually are 1-3 days, involves people who have been gamedevs for YEARS and want to help out others. As someone who has been working in gamedev (as artist/unity artist), I try to join atleast one each year and it's not only super fun, but I learn so much each time! Don't be afraid about the first one, unless you have been gamedev for years on end, everyones first gamejam is a heartbreak and visual/code/design chaos. While the idea of making a game in 1-3 days seems crazy, it helps you understand the steps better. For example, 1. how to plan out the game (plan the big picture-> create the base-> add additional elements one by one ) 2. how to create the visuals ( concept -> simplified version ingame -> improve, improve, improve)

I wish I could go back and show this video to my family 10 years ago! They made me give up my art because it wasn't a 'realistic' life goal or career. It was do what they wanted or be homeless, those were my options. I am now trying to rebuild what I had back then and build it into what i wanted way back then. I was almost there too! So you don't even have to be a student coming out of HS/College, you can be 10 years after being forced to give it all up starting over. It's a long hard road but if you have the passion for it, you can do it. Never give up!

I have an Assioates in fine art (just finished in 2019) and I’ve been trying to find an art related job. Been a huge struggle this year, but I think it also boils down to what type of art job I want. Which I have no clue. There’s so many different art jobs that I got really overwhelmed 🤣 so here I am trying to figure out what art job I should try. My fear rn is not finding an art job at all

Heads up for any artists looking to do freelance/independent commission work at home (and possible others as well). Not a lot of people like to bring it up but NSFW art is not something to scoff at. You can get quite a bit of NSFW commission work to help supplement and fill gaps (pun not intended) in your commission schedule as long as you're not offended by pornographic material. And even if you're not someone willing to do this kind of work, you will still probably be asked about it by the people looking for it.

I wanted to do art as a career when I was in high school, but was quickly shot down by my parents with the whole "there's no jobs in art" thing, so that really deterred me from pursuing it as more than just a minor in college. Now I'm working on improving my skills and style and such, and I'm at a place where I'm much happier with how I'm drawing than ever before. I'd love to do storyboard and concept art for characters, prints and commissions, too. I think people also don't realize that advertisement is a huge area for artists! Look at Coca-Cola, Nike, Addidas, etc. Someone had to design those logos.

This was super helpful! I'm a freelance artist right now, working on my Twitch streams, KZbin channel, and have been doing mainly commissions. I've applied to a few places for comic/freelance work, as well as a few game studios of concept work, but haven't really gotten any feedback from those, so I've been leaning more towards the commissions since they are paid gigs and I've had the most success with. I'm studying anatomy and composition online, so I'm trying to apply for things that would really help to reinforce those lessons.

I would suggest drawing a line between doing art as hobby and as work. I work as an artist in a game studio and let me tell you, there is a very clear difference between drawing game assets and what I draw in my free time. While both of them are highly dependent on anatomy/composition/lights/shading/colors.. It highly differs and it can get confusing. Just focus on improving, do art and sketches. Don't focus on trying to master everything, think what you really want to do in the future and follow that ( I know game artist who really wanted to create a cute simple childrens book, but they drew highly detailed pieces for work. You think " oh but they can easily draw this epic scene, how hard some shapes and doodles could be? " simply put- hard. because its completely different from what they are used to) Don't give up and follow your dreams, do your best!

This was a big help. This is information I've been needing. I did graphic design in highschool, Illustration and Fine Art in College and Animation and Illustration in University but as far as work is concerned I've managed to go nowhere (of course the pandemic started a month after University which obviously made things much harder, talk about timing). Now I'm pushing 28 and I'm concerned I won't be able to make a start. I have gained the impression from some other artists that if you don't get in early then your chances are very slim. Not exactly a motivating thought. I'm a cartoon/graphic artist and I do wonder who, if anyone, would be interested in my work. I've done a small handful of commissions in the last year but no real work. Having knowledge of alternate pathways really helps.

I ended up with a few clients that kept coming back and slowly gained more popularity on instagram where most of my new clients find me these days. I am currently going into my senior year and have been worried about producing enough volume of work within the time I have left. When you were going into your last couple years of school, was there a certain goal you set for yourself in producing work to prepare you for the industry? Between other things in life, and battling procrastination, I find myself with a lot of anxiety worrying if I will have enough quality work to show when seeking jobs. Do you think there is a reasonable amount of pieces I should strive to produce each week/month before stepping into the industry?

Amazing video with good helpful information! Ive been hearing a lot about asset work you can do for games (like icons and interface) as a career path and being a skin designer for games? I thought those were interesting ones I just found out about- Oh and I cant forget- Congrats on the 100K milestone!

I kinda want to be a story board artist And I’m glad there are other people in the same situation as me, My parents are very strict (especially my mom) and prefer the money before the enjoyment and that doesn’t help at all because I think they are just anxious and doesn’t know that much about art. At least my dad supports me at 100% but I feel like he just prefer that I do traditional art like. And If someone sees this, can you help me please ?

Man I'm just trying to get out of my warehouse job... I was fortunate to be show my work to one of the higher ups and they worked with me on doing some logo design and even commissioned my 1st art piece.. ^^ Now I got a bug, got a vision that I'm trying to push for. Logo Design, Illustration... and I also want to do comic work... I hope Denver "Comi-con" (it got renamed) comes back and I'm hoping to have a portfolio ready to show off :)

Dave Greco no sh*t, I’ve been working my ass off for 2 years straight, there’s bound to be results sooner or later, I’m heading to college next year on an animation program, ( I prefer illustration but learning more about animation would make me flexible as an artist and I’d be able to accept more job offers- jeez it’s so much work.... I’ll manage though. 👌🏼✨

Well I'm 28 this year and I just started to drawing as an complete beginner. In the future I would love to make money this way (as an artist), but I'm afraid I started too late for being professional artist + I always want to be at least very good with things I do, and for now I can't see myself to catching up to people who started with their teenage years, or even earlier. I hope there will be a place for me in game dev for making concept arts, or something smiliar.

It's never too late to start art, people nowadays open their own stores and do commissions and just that is enough to provide income and always have that creativity. Just get tour foundation solid and your not that far behind everyone.

i know i'm late to the party with commenting on this video, but i'd like to ask Can you still enjoy art once you make it a career? everywhere I go, all I hear is people losing their passion because they tried to make it a job. I'm afraid of the same happening to my art. That the thing i used to love will end up as just a chore and that i won't have the passion or motivation to work on the projects that i've been building up to for years now with my art.

Huion is a good brand that is significantly cheaper. Also, looking at a refurbished IPad Pro and installing Procreate is a good option, considering how much support and development Procreate has been gaining. 1st generation IPad Pros can go for like $250 refurbished.

@@eaudrey5323 yeah i was, at first, wanting a huion ( HUION Kamvas Pro 13 Digitizer to be exact) so I did my research as always. Many reviews i saw on KZbin weren't that good but when i went into deeper research ( I was asking people on discord their experience with that pen display) and many people told me about how the colors sucked, like instead of blue it was purple-ish and then i just stopped looking for huion cuz that pen display I think it was their cheapest one (420€).

Though I still don’t know exactly where I should go in the field, especially watching so many videos about concept art and how fast you must produce. Personally I’m good in every medium but I’m a slow painter so I feel like I wouldn’t make it in this field sometimes😔

Hey Dave, I’m currently enrolled in Syracuse University’s illustration program for a BFA. I start my first year in a few weeks. I’ve been thinking of staying here for two years and then transferring from the university to an art school. Ringling is one of my top choices to transfer to but I don’t know if I have the money for it. I was wondering if you could maybe tell me a little about your experience with the school, what it has to offer, connections I can make, and would it be worth transferring.

I am currently a high school student but freelance already and I see my future really uncertain. I am not satisfied with my artwork and I am afraid when the time will come and I have to find a job my skills are still not enough. Dream about working on MTG and that sort of thing so my portfolio mostly consists of illustrations. I also have that problem that I mostly draw animals and anthros and really need more human art. And of course, I want to achieve a more realistic style and that frustrates me most. Have half a year to skill up and graduate before I will actually do something about my career

I'm a hobbyist and I'm way on the younger side, but I've gotten opportunities even then. It's always good to try and share your work and be open to those chances -- you never know where it could come from. Nonetheless, I keep striving to improve and take my work to the next level. Thanks for the awesome video Dave!
