I am working in a game development industry and heres how its looking for us: . Concept Artist - brings the ideas to life. Visualises locations, characters, props, mood of the scene, patterns and mechanics, by doing multiple variations of the thing. Their goal is to be as quick as possible with a ton of various ideas and unusual takes. They also have to always remember about properly showing off the idea, so that the rest of the team know exacly what is going on on the concept. . 2D Artists - depending on the size of the team, they might be doing some concept artists job as well, but usually they are the one helping develop the already excisting idea, not creating it. They are rendering and polishing 2D assets, helping with repetetive tasks, textures, etc. This job is more common in mobile games studios. . Illustrator - makes illustrations and sometimes polishes ready concept arts so it can be for example posted on social medias. Ive never met illustrator hired on a full-time, they are always either commission freelance artists or hired from another company, that specialises only in illustrations. . Animator - makes animations, either in the engine or outside programms. There can be animator 2D or 3D (or both if someone is cool :) ) ' Storyboardist - its the same as you described. This job exists almost only in big AA+ studios. Usually its animators job to preaper storyboard before the animation if needed. ' Character Artists - it often missunderstood. They sculpt characters in 3D following already done character designs made by concept artist. They do not design the character themselfs. ' Character concept artist - thats the right position you should be looking at, if you are interested in designing characters yourself. Its exacly like concept artist, but ONLY for characters/sometimes mobs. I guess you can name them character designers, but ive never seen anyone using this term in gamedev. Same as with storyboardist - its very unlikely that smaller studio is going to have that position. General concept artists often do the characters design too. ' Level Artist - They are responssible for placing ready assets in the engine, creating the locations with a help of concept/ mood art. ' Level Designers - They design levels (gameplay-wise). . 3D Artist - does 3D art usually based on concept art. In smaller studios often does the job of the character artist too. ' Game artist/General artist - from what i see they are usually "one army men", are required to do everything from animation, to illustration and often help to develop early idea for the game. ' UI artists - icons, menus, design of the fonts etc. More design, less drawing/painting. ' And many many more... Please take a note that what i just described might vary among different workplaces. Those titles are not always well defined and do not always tell you 100% what you might be required to do. It can often be merged - like 2D/UI artist or 3D/2D artist, depends on the size of the company. Game development industry is pretty chaotic and theres a lot of new positions beeing created every year ( for example lately there are AI artists, that specialise in generating required AI stuff). Different games need diffrent artists and sometimes its hard to put one task on only one person. Thats why job interviews are so important here - they always tell you what they need from you :) It is pretty hard to get in, since many people dont quite understand how does the job look like. For example i can myself see plenty of young artists applying for a concept art position with a portfolio built solely on the illustration, without any proper concept art in it... Remember - always put in your portfolio something that you would actually do during the job youre applying for :D

I'd like to add that In publishing you can also do Book cover as an illustrator and/or graphic designer which is not as stable either but there are some cool gigs for it. For storyboarding consider film industry too because they also work with them. For the animation industry stuff, it also applies to games industry, and for games industry you also have UI artist which is has a lot of offer imo.

I'm currently stuck between two careers. I work as a graphic designer and am looking for my next step. Motion design is a secure and financially viable option that interests me. But I originally went to college to become a director for animation, so, there's also storyboarding. I have struggled to get hired in both so I'm spending time learning (I'm better at motion design. Struggle to kind of calm down my drawings into storyboards) but I feel like I should focus on one so I can get good enough to get hired (especially in this recession). Idk which is for me. My difficult to ascertain dream, or the fulfilling and more promising side option... P.s. Oni was great!!!☺️

Ah so some more options that relate to these but in a slightly different field! Game development! I currently freelance for a small indie studio as a 2D artist and animator, and honestly its a fascinating field which carries a lot of the skillsets of working in animation for film or shows, but also with a technical twist. Theres concept art, character design, environment design, storyboard for cinematics, 2D or 3D modeling and animation, UI and UX design, VFX and special effects animators. The industry is definitely interesting, as you can work with an AAA studio (Bungie, or Playstation etc) if you really want to specialize in a skillset for a larger team, or work with indie studios where you can usually wear multiple hats if that interests you. I think the biggest difference between working in games versus other entertainment might be the prevalence of technical limitations and making sure to always serve the player experience- the art is heavily reliant on not just story but also mechanics, and how can the art tell a story, or communicate the level design, help the player, etc. Very fun puzzle in my experience!

Is making a Manga apart of the whole graphic novel thing? (Also is there a way to make a Manga in the states?)
@kokoro9114
@kokoro9114 Жыл бұрын
Typically unless you are Japanese you don't qualify your comic or graphic novel to be a "manga". Manga is by definition I believe is: a Japanese rapidly produced graphic novel. While it's confusing at first I hope this helps. You can create a graphic novel, or a light novel in the style of Manga but unless you do a lot of research and use a legitimate Japanese pen name and study the language it's very hard to trick the masses enough to get classified as a Manga artist.

I need some advice. I am applying for illustration and character and concept art jobs, but there isn’t many role’s available in London uk. Or if there are available roles it’s often the same role being put out there that I applied to months before. Also I don’t get any feedback when I get rejected and it seems those jobs aren’t being filled. It gets confusing on what to do because I don’t see any roles that are constantly there. I feel like there is a different route to how people get into the industry other than applying, but I don’t know anyone who’s a artist. Anyway your storyboards for ONI are really good.

Hmm this is smth a lot of entry level artist struggle with, and I think a big big factor is that most of the time, concept art and character design is handled by seniors or experienced artists in a company. Characters are usually, literally, the face of a story, so someone with experience is given those tasks to make sure it goes well. Most of the time, entry level or new concept artists might be doing more work with environment or prop design, for both animation or for video games. I also suggest finding a way to network online! Discord is a great place to find communities of like-minded people and make friends (example: Work with Indies server if you are interested in working on games or just want advice/your portfolio reviewed). I can’t really say much else without seeing your work itself but just some things to consider maybe!
@XXXXXX-tn6pl
@XXXXXX-tn6pl Жыл бұрын
If they are rejecting you without ever giving any feedback at this stage, that 90% means either they are looking for different artstyle than yours OR they are looking for someone with a higher skillset. It also might be that you dont have enough specific artworks in your portfolio (concepts for concept art lets say), but that would usually mean theyre gonna contact you asking for a test task. +1 to what @Sofimei_jmj said - the products of those job you listed are mostly "face of the project" and the company needs the best people for it. It doesnt mean you are not good, i would say... just unexpirienced. Try looking around for "2D artist" possition. They are usually working with ready base designs and do repetetive tasks that senior artists dont have the time to do, but this way youll gain the exp needed for higher positions :)

It never occurred to me that "business owner" and "freelance artist" could be different things. A lot of these job titles are "merged" together in my head. What a relief that I can think of all this as separate disciplines. No wonder i been so stressed, lmao. Thanks! You cleared my brain fog!

I was so surprised when you mentioned Oni: Thunder God’s Tale! That was one of my all time favorite watches, and I coincidently had my phone next to my Naridon figure that I needled felted as you mentioned it!! xD Such a beautiful creation of a show, and I will forever be in awe of those who had the pleasure of working on it! ♥️

I am currently in the class 11th Humanities student and till 10th i wanted pursue my career into a law field, still want to but also at the same time i also want my talent to be showcased to the world because i am pretty good at dancing, painting (animation to be exact) but also kinda scared to pursue my career into art field because nowadays it's just more great to be in a field of a particular subject. Well, if i can't pursue my career into law than i am considering to be in a art field. Well, ik it's kinda "early" for some people to look out at the jobs even before studing it..😅 idk if i am stating it correctly

I finished Oni this morning and I appreciated all the political commentary and environmental messages and diversity. 45 minutes per episode was a cool choice too cause it allowed the story to breathe. Thank you for your work on it.

That’s why I am starting in college a KZbin, a social media platform, and getting started before I graduate, because I see that their is a feast and famine of the animation industry, also trying to develop my skills in story telling because I think it would be nice down the road to have my own series or film. Hope you have a great holiday weekend. Halloween is always a treat lol.

I worked in UX design for several years working mostly on a website and app. It paid well but I was very unfulfilled. I considered animation as one path. I want to be in the world of storytelling and emotions. Thanks for making this!

why was it unfulfilling?
@Shalini.__
@Shalini.__ Жыл бұрын
@@charlottequinnie I always wanted to be in a more creative career but didn’t believe in myself. I felt very insecure as an artist during my early 20s. Design comes pretty easy to me so I took that route after college. I’m glad I did because it helped me make a decision and become financial stable and independent. Now I’m a little older, in my late 20s with more working experience I have more confidence to pursue something else more in alignment with what I want, which is to work in an entertainment or close to it. I used to attach myself to my work more but after working for several years you get a lot of critique and rejection so I don’t take anything personally anymore.

I was working a FT job unrelated to art but now have been given an opportunity to go into the career I always wanted which is art and specifically animation/storyboarding. The only problem is I have no idea how to get started! How does someone who's spent the majority of their professional career in an un art related field get started? Perhaps it's a bit like someone straight out of art school trying to get their first gig? But again how does one do that?

Storytelling is in everything good imo, the best branding and advertising tells a story, the best backgrounds are a character in themselves that tell a story or many stories.

Degree doesnt matter AT ALL. The only thing important is skillset and expirience. They would rather hire an artist that have decent portfolio without school, than have to deal with someone with art college but not so great artworks. Just practise more and with time you will get there
