Yeah, leave the Spanish behind. If you don't speak Portuguese, English is fine. "desculpe, não falo português, fala inglês?" is a great phrase to memorize when visiting. Regarding tipping - always a touchy topic, and for good reason. Leaving a tip is not just a transaction between your and the wait staff; it also can put pressure on Portuguese people to start tipping, too. I think there are also some regional variations, and if you are in a very tourist area or not. Generally speaking; not tipping is probably the best approach. Maybe a 13th thing not to do in Portugal; assume that things are basically the same across Portugal. This may be a small country, but the variety in climate, landscape, culture, and social norms is significant. Don't assume that just because something is true in Lagos, that it will also be that way in Viana do Castelo.
@ReflexVEКүн бұрын
My general approach has been to tip in tourist areas and not tip elsewhere. Also I've noticed restaurants that are used to tips make a point of generating receipts that have a space for them, others just show you the receipt and present the machine for MBWay. I took that as a subtle hint.
@ptcountrybear7813Күн бұрын
Backlash… 😊 ALL of our Portuguese friends have told us the same thing. At a cafe, no tipping. Your best gift is your continued patronage. At dinner, even in a nice restaurant, tip one euro per person no matter the amount of the bill. And only do that IF the service was exceptional.

When I was younger, I worked at a restaurant and when people tip even 0.50 cents make my day, but I didnt expect tipping because we dont know the circumstances of the people, who knows the money they got, possible they got only for eat, just coming back and support and be kind is good. Since then, I have always tipped only if the person who tries is best and shows kindness.

Being neighbors with Spain, Portugal has had a long feud with the spanish. They tried invading us several times, and we always managed to drive them away. At one point their king even ruled over us due to lack of a heir from our king, this was considered to have been dark and shameful times in our history. For that reason, we take pride in NOT being Spanish and NOT speaking spanish (even though we understand it perfectly). So, unless you're from a spanish speaking country, saying "gracias" is very disrespectful.
@rusedginКүн бұрын
I agree that many Portuguese take pride in not being Spanish and avoiding speaking Spanish, even though we understand it perfectly. Honestly, it does grate on me too when a foreigner replies with gracias instead of obrigado. But we have to remember that history goes both ways-we also invaded Spain, and despite past conflicts, we generally get along well these days, especially in the border regions. Personally, I’ve gotten into the habit of saying 'grato' (grateful) instead of 'obrigado' for fun, and it just so happens to be closer to the Spanish gracias. It’s interesting how our relationship with Spain blends historical rivalry with cultural coexistence.

My Portuguese take about the "Don't assume they speak Spanish"... We find it funny offensive :) That means that only 0,01% of Portuguese will refuse to talk with you. The remainder will understand that you don't speak Portuguese and you are trying to communicate in another language. The majority of us will go along and make an effort to talk back to you in a sort of Spanish (we are used to it). But if you want to win our hearts, here is the trick... If you have mobile data, take advantage of Google Translate. To avoid keep it cold and distant, use these two: "Hi, can I talk in English with you?" (translate it to Portuguese from Portugal) Chances are the person (if young) will also speak English. If not, translate this "Can I speak in Spanish instead?" Play it. Don't be afraid to do so... we are always willing to communicate with a foreigner :)

I'm taking the plunge. I've started the process and will be moving to Portugal in 2025. I fell in love with Portugal when I was there in September 2022. I only got to visited Porto, Tomar, Obidos, Lisbon, Sintra and part of the Algarve. I plan to explore every corner of the country. I will be based in the Algarve so I can avoid the cold winters. I'm ready for less stress and strife and hopefully a slower pace of life than what I currently have in the U.S. where I'm working so many hours and still can't keep up with all the demands on my time. I have never forgotten my conversation with a Portuguese boat captain who explained how Americans are killing themselves with stress and meaningless deadlines. He explained the difference in Portugal and I have not forgotten that wisdom. There is a lot to be said for sunshine and sangria. I'm already working on the language part before I arrive. The Portuguese people I met in 2022 were incredibly kind. They appreciated my attempts to speak Portuguese even though I was very clumsy. I'm looking forward to the adventure!

That is not necessarily "disappointing", but it can be irritating if you are not prepared for it, so we need to warn newcomers that Portugal is in a totally different timeline.

If you are going to drive, learn the Portugal-specific rules for roundabouts; they are not the same as elsewhere in Europe, not even Spain. Also, always wear your seatbelts. Have you seen those GNR patrols in the roundabouts? That's what they are looking for and ticketing for: not wearing seatbelts.
@KetraarКүн бұрын
This tells me you are not doing roundabouts right, as they are the same rules across EU.😏

If you don't mind, what are the rule differences? I've only driven in Portugal and the USA, so by default I'm following Portuguese rules. What do I need to do differently when I take a road trip to Spain?
@c4tuboКүн бұрын
@@Ketraar Incorrect. Portugal modified its rules for driving through a roundabout in 2014. See the description below and this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3bNootsr52LnM0
@c4tuboКүн бұрын
@@ReflexVE The modification in Portugal is that when entering a roundabout with multiple lanes inside it, you may only stay in the outermost lane if you are turning right at the very next exit. It is illegal to pass the next exit and continue on through the circle from the outermost lane. If you are not turning right at the next exit, you must change to an inner lane before reaching that exit. From an inner lane you are expected to change to the outermost lane before the next exit that you plan to take, while signalling right to do so. Note that if you are approaching a roundabout from multiple lanes in the road, then only enter it from the rightmost lane if you are immediately turning right at the next exit, otherwise enter the roundabout from a left lane and make sure that you cross past the outermost lane, staying out of that lane until just before your exit. There is not much info online about this. They will teach you this at a Portugal driving school or look it up in the IMT rules. Drive around Portugal and you will notice many drivers doing this correctly, but some drivers still violate it. Videos are hard to find, but this one has a nice animation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaSVnZeDeM6La6c
