Your detailed tutorial was the best on KZbin. I truly appreciate your non-destructive approach to opening the handle base. Plus the Loctite screw thread liquid is a great idea. This has happened a few times before and we just sent it back to Phillips for a replacement. Thanks to your video, l can fix it myself next time this happens. This is truly why KZbin was created for. I hope you are very proud of yourself. This is an excellent video, but you already know that from all of the positive comments. So instead, I thought it'd be cool to paint you a picture of how awesome you are. Let's assume every person that left a comment fixed their toothbrush after watching. There's 500 comments, but you replied to most, so let's say 250 people. The price for a Sonicare ranges from $30-$90+. So lets just use $50 as a rough guess for an average. That's $12,500 that you collectively saved people. But wait. How many views do you have? 117k. I can't imagine that people are coming here if they don't have one or aren't intending to fix it. So let's grab a safe number, a bit less than half the people that watched the video attempted to fix and were able to fix. 50,000 people. Dude. That's freakin' $2,500,000! Two point five million dollars that you likely saved people!!! Could be more! Who knows! Regardless, whatever the true amount is, you have clearly made a huge impact on people's collective finances. Super cool!

Oh, you genius, man!!! Of all the videos on KZbin about this, no one shows the device close enough to demonstrate how the interior clips work. I consider myself pretty good at taking things apart, and had actually taken mine apart once before, but for some reason, this time mine was not coming apart. $200 for a toothbrush, as recommended by my dentist, and it lasted only 1.5 years before the screw inside came loose. Has Phillips gone the way of most American companies, should we have subscribed to a monthly service to keep the toothbrush working? I don't know. I'm disgusted by these companies that literally put garbage on the shelves, and then use marketing departments to sell it to us using our kids and our professionals (doctors etc) to try to convince us we need to spend $200 on a tooth brush, when they give us one every 6 months during our checkup! Thank you sir for making an excellent, easy to follow video!

I had this exact problem with my last Sonicare, but I could not figure out how to open it up without breaking it. Unfortunately I did not find this video until I had already bought a replacement, a cheap Walmart knock-off. Fortunately I did not throw the old Philips away though, so I will use what I have learned here to fix it. Thank you so much for this, Dave. You are a hero for right-to-repair, ending e-waste, and the fight against planned obsolescence. Note: I am glad to see that the Sonicare is made so that the battery can be replaced. The Walmart toothbrush has a rechargeable lithium battery that is only good for about two years. The toothbrush came with instructions for what to do after that. They tell you to break open the handle, cut the wires to the lithium battery, and remove it so it can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Then you throw the rest of the toothbush in the trash, so it will end up in a landfill. Simply replacing the lithium battery, so that the toothbrush can continue to be used is NOT an option. But now that I look at the instructions for the Sonicare, they tell you to do the same thing! (And now we know why they don't simply put lock-tight on that screw at the factory.)

Thank you! The screw idea was great for getting the end off. I had a really had time with the clips on the inside, and the screw was not just loose, but so bad it came off entirely as soon as I got the thing apart, so I had to figure out which way the parts went back together. I don't have Loc-Tite handy, but there's an old trick to use fingernail polish on threads to secure them - you just have to let it dry for a few minutes. (Also, if you ever want to unscrew it again later, fingernail polish can be broken again easily enough. But it doesn't tend to break by itself. Really helps.)

Great vid and well thought out. Some SoniCare brushes have a small hole in the end cap. If you have an air compressor, you can use an air nozzle (with tapered rubber tip) to pressurize the body through that hole and the cap will pop loose. No hole? Drill a 1-1.5MM hole (1/16" is fine) in the plastic cap. Careful, since a drilling too deep can possibly damage the internal mechanism. Then, the compressed air will pop it off. When doing this, make sure to use your fingers to support the rubber seal at the brush end or the air pressure may pop a hole in it, compromising the seal. When the repair is finished, the hole in the end cap can be sealed back up with a dab of glue or silicone sealer. I use some silicone grease on the O-ring seal in the end cap and a dab on the seal at the brush end. Vaseline will also work. Helps to maintain waterproofing. One last thing: "some" end caps go back in only one way, having a notch which must be aligned with the body for the cap to press into place correctly. Once the tricks are known, as you point out, it's no big deal to repair these.

WOW!!! Using the bolt to take the end cap off is genius. My post was loose and after watching this video, repairing my toothbrush was a breeze. Keep your sonicare running longer by keeping the water out. Always take the brush head off and wipe the water off the motor unit. If you leave the brush head on and stand the toothbrush upright on the base (like I used to do), the water in the brush will eventually seep into the guts of the motor unit and ruin the electronics inside. My first sonicare lasted me a year before it quit working. Not knowing how to open it up, I used force to push down on the post until the bottom broke out. When I pulled the guts out, there was a lot of green from where the water had worked its magic on the circuit board and copper wiring.

what would be the metric counterparts of screw/bolt/bit?
@DaveRat3 ай бұрын
To convert imperial to metric, multiply the imperial number by 25.4. So in this situation imperial number is a quarter of an inch or 0.25 * 25.4 equals 6.35 mm. So it'd be a 6.5 mm metric bolt. That said using a 6 mm bolt and jamming a toothpick in the hole first or a tiny wire or something and then screwing the bolt in should do you.

Thanks. Had handles before where tip came loose (and fell out in one case). This time I had an HX6530 warranty replacement which dud the same. I used a method to open seen elsewhere. Squeezed across widest part of handle end after protecting plastic with cloth or card until gap appears around the cap at the bottom. Use small flatblade to lever up and remove all of innards with cap attached. My issue was the same (loose screw - all this hi tech and it comes down to a screw with no Loctite). I was going to remove the screw, but even loose it didn’t want to come out. Used a cocktail stick to apply some Loctite. Some care needed to avoid dropping a big drop of that into the tip innards which I don’t think would do it much good. Once opening figured out, one of the easier repairs (and battery could be replaced of course if needed). Thanks for giving confidence to attempt.

If you don't have luck finding a washer possibly getting some Marine silicone sealant and forming a seal on the inside after cleaning it well so the silicon will stick The metal shaft should slide on the silicon and the silicon should stay stuck to the plastic if you don't make it too messy and form a decent seal

Great stuff, worked for me with a threaded peg from a bookshelf. The plastic tabs were a bit different on mine, but they worked the same way. I needed to squeeze the case to open a gap, then I could get a tiny screwdriver between the tab and the case, then move the tab in while pushing the whole thing (held upside-down) down onto the table (to maintain tension on tab 1 so it didn't go right back while I moved on to tab 2)

This is pure genius. I was able to fix my kids' toothbrush and keep it out of a landfill. I think you should start an eBay business selling "Sonicare endcap removal tools". Now: why doesn't Philips just use Loctite on that screw to begin with.

Thank you and I got enough on my plate before I start making new toys. I had no idea this would be such a popular video! I was just sharing something fun I figured out And yeah I don't know why they don't lock tight or whether they started but it sure would have saved a lot of grief for a lot of people Play a lot of ways to money too

Just curious, why would you continue to buy a faulty product? These things are expensive, if I knew this was such a common issue I would’ve bought from their competitors
@DaveRat Жыл бұрын
I think there was a bad run. That said, they are ok with warranty returns and sending a free new one And Once ya get the new one, here is how ya fix the old one and have two!
@Nagim-d3z Жыл бұрын
@@DaveRat Ah I guess that makes sense. I just applied for a warranty replacement and the website said I have to send the old ones in, maybe because I live in the country Philips is from? Hope I just get to keep the old one 😂
@DaveRat Жыл бұрын
Yeah, prerhaps. May e people started taking advantage of their old policy. But yes, we have had a few fail and not putting locktite on the screw was dumb. And costly I am sure for them

I wish I could echo the same as everyone else. I was able to open and access everything perfectly, however, after tightening the screw, the vibration was not as intense as before. My wife has the matching brush and it’s night and day difference. I wonder if there’s a torque spec or maybe something else that’s loose. I’ve inspected thoroughly and am unable to visualize anything out of sorts. I was really hoping tightening the screw was the solution but there seems to be a bit more to it; in my particular case anyway. Any feedback on what else could be wrong would be appreciated. Thanks!
@DaveRat Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there is a spring steel connection between the drive and the shaft that cracks. It's hard to see and may need to peel back tape. It is not an easy fix and you would need to replace the part. When it cracks the energy is reduced and when it breaks there is very little vibration on the brush

When you called, did you have to provide a receipt in order for them to send the new one?

No, initially they did not ask for receipt but we had another one fail later and they wanted a receipt

I have the hx6240-05. Problem is a very short run time, I suspect needs battery replacement. In the hole where the top of charger fits into base of unit, looks like possibly a slotted head screw? Could that be the way to open my model? Any advice appreciated . thank you for your video.

Thanks for this video I just fixed my wife's toothbrush. 1/4 20 screw was theticket. My problem was a little different the toothbrush was fully charged would be five times and not engage. I popped the bottom of the battery nearest the charging coil up as the other side appeared to be attached. There was a small tab that obviously wasn't making a good contact with the circuit board I then pop the battery back in tight. Problem solved!

I would have liked to see a a close-up of the bottom of the Sonicare - they have so many models, I’m not sure if the one you have has the same bottom as mine (HX6521/01 bought in 2020.) Since my problem was the toothbrush turning on by itself and the front button not shutting it off, I had to pry off the bottom and stop it - gave it a cleaning to get rid of the condensation and it works OK. I didn’t mess up the bottom enough to stop if from working.

Brilliant, cheers! Took me quite a bit longer than the presenter, but I succeeded. The hole was bigger, so try using paper like he advised to reduce the size. Also, I couldn't get the battery compartment out either; it didn't just pop out, so try tippng it upside down and shaking it downwards. This worked for me.

Great tutorial thank you so much. I've just repaired my 2 year old HX680 with this issue. The screw that holds the shaft to the motor had completely unscrewed itself and was loose inside. Who knows what those vibrations are doing to my old teeth 😁. A very elegant solution to removing the base cap good engineering there and worked a charm. I think I threw my first Sonic Care away with the same symptoms.
