this is a two cylinder engine with 4 pistons and two crankshafts. the piston come together in the center in each cylinder to make the compression ,the cylinder head sits on top of the block in the center with the intake and exhaust valves

That is very cool. I appreciate all the hard work it took to make that motor run. Love it and thank you.

Similar to the Achates engine and some older engine designs that are touted as being exceptionally efficient. Nice job.

I run the engine on a mixture of Coleman white fuel and a little two stroke oil. the fuel only has an octane of around 55, that makes it real good for low compression engines
@TimSmith-vl4qk2 жыл бұрын
Opposed piston engine has high compression
@Wingnut353 Жыл бұрын
@@TimSmith-vl4qk That depends on the stroke.... probably a fairly short stroke here.... the advantage of OP engines is they can have double the effective stroke without double the crank throw...

This configuration would normaly be used with ported cylinders and a blower (and selfignition). Would like to see this in 2 stroke mode with a small blower.

Amazing design! Instead of the 2 big flywheels, would you be able to use cogs to turn a single flywheel between them?

Actually the main point of an opposed piston engine is a lack of valves and their drive. Which theiretically gives more efficiency due to of no need to drive valve springs. Did you try not to use the valves? It's really interesting, if it would be possible to make it work without intake blower.

And also they are diesel.

What is the compression? I am planning on building something similar with nitromethane fuel, based on regular RC engines that you can buy. (Those have ~8.25 to 1)

Hello I bought the plans for this engine, did you flywheel the engine at diameter 2.25 or larger? thank you
@mrcatdoc4 жыл бұрын
I first made them to plan, I felt they did not carry enough energy so I made them bigger. Also you should make a decent sized intake plenum the air fuel will mix better and you should get much better throttle response. Also you need a bigger cooling system and you need to pin the heat shafts better than what the plans call for

I appreciate the effort to design and manufacture this engine. What is the purpose of this toy?
@mrcatdoc5 жыл бұрын
This is a 2 cyl opposed piston engine. I run it on Coleman's white fuel with a little 2stroke oil mixed in. During WW2 a German company, Yonkers manufactured a diesel version that was used in bomber aircraft. I wouldn't call it a toy, but the purpose of machining every part by hand and assembling the engine and seeing it run is for my enjoyment!

Ever thought of making a bigger replica and putting that on a bike?
@mrcatdoc4 жыл бұрын
I would like to make a bigger scale because I think it would run much better. The issues with putting it on a bike or something is lubrication of everything

wait where are the fumes coming out from? its not a 2 steps motor? there should be oil being burned
@Wingnut3532 жыл бұрын
he probably oils it manually externally, and the fuel is also oily... opposed piston engines inherently burn pretty clean no reason to expect smoke.
