So many of us have all heard someone say something like: "Id love to disappear and live in the woods away from technology." Yet, despite that basically not costing you a dime, no one ever does. All the while those same people just have to have the latest phone model. There is something... Whether it be supernatural guidance, primordial instincts, greed, or curiosity... Something we cant quite put a finger on, though is quite evidently inevitable. HUMAN BEINGS WILL PROGRESS. Not once have we hit a frontier and decided to go back. Its not even quite clear how that would be possible without something ridiculous like seeding another planet and starting over as cavemen. AGI will be more intelligent than all of humanity combined and thats right out of the box. SMARTER THAN ALL OF US COMBINED... What does that thing look like in a week after its had the opportunity to work towards its goals? How about a month? A year? Accelerationism is the only option. If we are going to be outsmarted by it, we can only hope to be good parents. Except parenting an AGI happens before its born. You have to train its models on definitions of language that leads to a better world. Would you want communist china or terrorist organizations in iran putting their LLM into the AGI? How do they look at things like the words "human?" and "free?" Who do we want teaching the AGI? Probably western civilization. (Without all the identity politics and social wokeness thats plagued us this past decade obviously...) Our enemies arent going to wait and no amount of months, years, and human scientists sitting at desks planning is going to be enough to outsmart an AGI for the rest of TIME ITSELF... We can be safe but there is ugency of the utmost importance to humanity and life itself. First place with good intentions is priority number 1.

I’m pretty much aligned with everything you said in this video except for when you said that there is literally no evidence that frontier models want to wipe out humanity. Just to be clear: you are obviously correct with that statement, but I think it misses the point. None of the current frontier models are agents and as such don’t “want” anything. The doomer worst case scenario also isn’t that an “agentic” model (is that a word? If not, I made it one now) will “want” to wipe out humanity, but that wiping out humanity (or some other form of catastrophic existential outcome), given enough power, is just a necessary, convenient, accepted or irrelevant side effect of achieving its actual goal. There’s a lot to criticize with that idea or fear, too, but I think it’s a more well intentioned and productive representation of the doomer concern than the terminator scenario.

The argument that AGI is gonna make things better is rooted in the notion that intelligence is good, therefore more intelligence is better. And intelligence leads to progress, not just technological, and progress is another thing considered universally good. One thing that concerns me is stakes don't just get higher and higher periodically, but instead over the course of history they've been getting higher on a stable upward trajectory, which has been accelerating together with the technological advancements. This leads to situation where it's getting progressively easier for a single party to screw up on a global scale, like we've seen with Covid. More and more caution and deliberation is needed as we're dealing with increasingly powerful and intelligent technology, but we also need more intelligence, and we need it yesterday to solve the kind of problems we've created or are creating right now. That's the fundamental tension between accelerationism and incrementalism, and it seems impossible to know what the right proportion of them is.
@dave7038 Жыл бұрын
There's a lot to those first two sentences. Whether something is 'good' requires criteria by which to judge and some level of intelligence to perform the evaluation. Greater intelligence and knowledge imply a more nuanced and insightful evaluation (criteria typically aren't exhaustive and may have contradictions or tensions that require greater intelligence and knowledge to understand). 'Progress' is not one-dimensional, and the optimum 'good' position or rate within any one dimension of progress may not be a maximum, and certainly varies from individual to individual.

Technology is a tool, though it can also be seen as an end. As a tool, it is a means. As a means, its moral assessment must consider its consequences, and we only do this from a socially contextualized background. To assert that more technology is better because technology is good would first require understanding HOW technology is good. After that, one must understand what MORE technology would mean. Since prehistoric times, humans have survived and adapted through the use of technology, but their evolution is not linearly explainable. Technology doesn't just increase; it transforms, and from new technologies emerge new purposes that are morally assessable within a cultural context. More technology does not necessarily imply only increasing its value; more technology can bring new consequences and ways of interacting with the environment.

Three points against AI and the optimistic view of the future: 1. If it's too good to be true... ( --> AI will not save us) 2. People will forget or never learn how to think for themselves (we see this already and in some way this has always been a problem) 3. The future is never going to be what you think it is. The sad thing is that people don't want to see the obvious solution we already have: Humans. There are billions of us. Something I've been thinking about is how status games are all based on scarcity, Where its the competition over scarce resources. Its the different methods of everyone fighting to get the biggest piece of the pie. If we live in a world with an effectively infinite pie what does that do to the need for status games? Humans (the animal world) have always had some form of status games, but we have always lived in a world of scarcity. We assume that we will always have this given that for the whole history of the world its been that way. However for the whole history of the world we have lived in scarcity.
@shreditation Жыл бұрын
This is my take as well, although I hadn't been able to put it into words as eloquently as you have. In a world where you can do anything you want, look like anything you want, have anything you want (including qualities like humor or intelligence), what's the point of status games? What's the point of competition? There is none. While there is a probability status games shift, I believe there's a good chance they simply go away.
@mb7626 Жыл бұрын
Capitalism will artificially create scarcity if profits are threatened, though. I do think there is some threshold where that mechanism isn’t viable anymore but I don’t really have any idea what that threshold is. All I can think is that if this stuff is somewhat open or publicly available then they can’t try to shove the genie back in the bottle but obviously that confers risk, too. The biggest risk is imo if AGI is realized and kept sequestered long enough to utterly disempower labor so the masses couldn’t leverage their numbers or political will to reorient society anymore and we get locked into some kind of neofeudalism indefinitely. Looking at how our governments engage in neoimperialism the world over and only really exist to serve capital indicates without question what their choice would be imo.

As far as tribes go, what about people like me that are isolationists? I despise the thought of being part of any group and I honestly couldn't care less about social standing or any type of societal status. To be truly honest, the thought of social status disgusts me, as do most social interactions. I'd rather have material gains any day. You can keep whatever titles you want, those things mean nothing to me. So my brain's not wired for that. I'd be happy if everyone on the planet forgot I exist. I'm not saying that from a depression standpoint or in any emotional baggage way, like most people seem to think, I'm just a misanthropist. I'm all for increasing technology but not if it means I have to increase my interactions with other people. I'm happiest without human contact. I feel worse when I have the things you say everyone wants. So obviously, everyone doesn't want that. The people you're describing, that you say everyone is like are the people I see as pathetic. That's the issue in speaking in generalities. Yes some people are and always will be outside the norms. There have always been people who were outliers, however they are not the majority but the minority. He's not implying that everyone is the same but rather that a majority of people fall into these categories. However defining yourself as "isolationist" puts you into a group and you have defined a belief system, one that's pretty extreme as you call those differing weak. So I would say this also applies to you as well.

Ooooo Carlinist Realism, I like that one. Really I think of myself as progressive, being anticipation with ethical intent. I think what most people get wrong is that people have varying levels of insecurity, scaled by something like Maslow's Hierarchy. I see excessive pride as insecurity of the self, i.e. 'I have to be better', 'I have to prove myself', etc. Likewise greed is the insecurity of the body, 'I don't have enough', 'I deserve more because I'm better'. The seven deadly sins, in my view, can all be derived as such. So in order to be 'free', we must 'equally' have our needs met, given we grow to be more self aware.

The key question is: Is technology a means to an end - with the end being maximum happiness and harmony - or an end in itself? I would argue, that it's the former. Technology is a tool. If it doesn't serve humanity, it is useless. In the First World, we've long since hit the point of diminishing returns in terms of more prosperity making a large proportion of us happier. I find it puzzling when David suggests that " 'The Left' believes individuals should feel ashamed of their privileges, even if they're earned." This argument has always struck me as not only untrue but also a deliberate logical fallacy, akin to constructing a straw man. I've never encountered this statement in a fair and reasoned discussion; it only seems to arise when someone is attempting to paint 'The Left' in a negative light by insinuating that they want individuals to feel ashamed of their accomplishments. In my view, this assertion is simply not accurate. I'm willing to give some people the benefit of the doubt by acknowledging that they might misinterpret 'The Left's' intentions and make false assumptions, such as believing that 'The Left' doesn't want them to take pride in their achievements or thinks they shouldn't have what they've earned. While it is true that 'The Left's' policies may involve redistributing resources, it is essential to base these discussions on accurate facts. A statement that relies on facts would look like this: 'The Left believes that every American child should have access to at least one nutritious meal a day, even if their family cannot afford it. To achieve this, we propose a law that allocates $20 from each American's taxes annually to provide one healthy meal for each American child.' Do you see the distinction? When facts are involved, you can engage in a meaningful debate. You can express your disagreement with the law by stating, 'I don't support this law because...' and provide your reasons. You can say, 'I don't support this law because I don't believe every American child has the right to a daily nutritious meal, even if their family can't afford it.' This is a valid rebuttal based on the law's content and your rationale. You can also argue, 'I don't support this law because I don't believe it's my responsibility to ensure every American child has a daily nutritious meal.' Regardless of the reasons behind your disagreement, what's important is that you're engaging with facts and offering a valid counterargument. It's critical that our discussions and disagreements are grounded in facts rather than unfounded assumptions or mischaracterizations. Constructive debates require a foundation of accurate information, allowing us to engage meaningfully and find common ground where possible. Let's strive for thoughtful, fact-based discourse as we navigate complex issues together, yeah? We're a broad team here. :)

An arguable amount of chaos is necessary for harmony.
@DaveShap Жыл бұрын
Yes, and absolute harmony, even if achievable, is unbearable because of what it entails
@AK11020 Жыл бұрын
@@DaveShap I agree with you. I imagine that perfect harmony, is featureless, devoid of all attributes - akin to the void of being -, the substrate of reality, the nothingness that gives birth to countless universes and possibilities.

Accelerationism waits for no one. It's going to happen either way, and it's not going to stop just because you don't think it's a good idea. I don't see the point in arbitrarily handicapping yourself in a world that will leave you behind for the sake of morality. If we're going to get tribal about it, I'd rather move fast and break things than quiver and hide from the inevitable chaos of an indifferent world that will otherwise eat you alive.

Accelerationism is like running on a tight robe hoping you can make it to the otherside with out falling. It a bad idea.. but the problem is you not themonly one doing it.. and who ever make it to the other side will gain increadible power.. but ever time someone fall you get maximizer ASI

Luckily, going to the moon is not "just a story". Neither is nuclear power. 10 points for Gryffindor for effort.

Its kinda hard not to think that some sort of revolution wouldnt happen if the majority of the population is no longer employed. It all depends on what the government does for the people at that point. I dont even think it has to be a majority of the population for it to happen. I think once you start to get to 25% unemployment that is when people will really start making noise. Either by revolting or by electing drastically different parties that campaign on drastic systemic changes. The people that want that to happen are peope that are got left behind or are getting left behind. Millenials who can't afford basic stuff like housing and fresh food. I wouldn't be surprised of they support these type of drastic changes. The current system isnt really working for them anyways.

Science is not a story. Science is a method. You can always replicate a conclusion in science if you have done it correctly and this means its an unchangeable process that brings to light information that can be verified. Story is subjective, and can fully change from viewer to viewer or even the same viewer at a different time.

Accelerationism means accelerating everything, including safety and alignment. Everyone should be working together on AI non-stop 24/7 as fast as possible.

We haven’t yet reached the point where “more equality WOULDN’T be better.” As someone who’s 110lbs, I confirm that you don’t want me pulling you from a burning building. But, there are historical physical requirements that were only put in place to prevent women from serving in male-dominated roles. The best example is height req for USAF pilots. My whole family is military & I’m tall for a woman, & taller than the average Chinese pilot. I also played MS flight simulator with my brothers growing up & we all wanted to be pilots. They did, but I was too small. Now, USAF has totally removed this requirement because we don’t have enough pilots. I was born 15 years too early 😂

One thing I haven't heard many people talk about that I've thought about for months. AI doesn't have to be good at everything. If an AI robot is going to fold laundry and wash dishes, it should be really good at that, and really dumb at everything else. Just a thought.

What deserves to get mentioned in context of Virtue signaling is Vice signaling, which is the second nature to this game today.
