I'm not Korean but I am Canadian, and I hate to say it but I experienced a similar type of bullying due to the fact that I was a chubby, short-haired redhead. The teachers saw the severe bullying and never did a damn thing. Kids wrote on my things, ruined my school supplies, laughed at me as I walked by, called me names, stuck derogatory insults on my back with tape (very classic of the mid 2000s 🙄), tried to coerce me into doing things for them that mostly meant just watching me get in trouble with teachers, stole my things, inappropriately touched me, would throw things at me, etc. Even the kids I considered to be my friends either didn't care or were too scared to say anything. I felt like I couldn't approach any teacher about it because the one time I attempted to do so, it tuned into a, "friends shouldn't fight, everyone apologize" situation, which completely defeated the purpose of me going to an authority figure in the first place. It was painful. I'm so sorry Jimmy had to experience that, but the whole "Canadians are so nice" is just simply not true. Sadly, it's a stereotype, and honestly the kids were the fucking worst of it. I know not everyone experiences what I have experience but it really sucked and made me a very angry person for a very long time. I felt like I had no voice, despite the push back I was able to throw at them (because well, obviously, English is my first language). It traumatized me to the point where I had to relearn how to socialize later towards the end of high school after coming out of a very suicidal depression. Not all do, but I managed to get through it and I'm even an educator now. I think you can guess one of the many reasons why I chose to be one.

I feel for Jimmy’s experience. Not personal experienced but I’m a teacher and I’m also Korean Canadian myself. If I was that pe teacher, yo what the hell, I would have reported those dumb kids myself in a heartbeat. I also know the feeling of dropped to a school where I had zero exposure to English and non Korean students. Luckily I did not experience bullying myself due to language differences, rather the kids were curious in a positive way, and so , his story made my heart ache more. I definitely did get the “ew what kind of food is that” whenever I had Korean food packed, resulting me to eat in the bathroom alone or be angry at my own mom for packing such food (which I regret till this day as an adult - but u were a kid …) The racism exist and unfortunately living in a country as a minority you can’t avoid that. I also currently live in Taiwan and damn I did not know about taichung being the …gang mob city… will def avoid traveling during..late night … lololol

I feel for those who do have negative experiences starting out abroad. It's so hard, especially for a young mind to adjust to. Also hard when going abroad to a Western country is touted so highly only for its education and job opportunities, when getting by day-to-day is a real shock for many immigrants. And when sheltered kids and non-helping adults are equal assholes ...😑 People can be better, a lot of times they choose not to, and that's what sucks. But I'm glad there were better memories too.

I'm Vietnamese American and have heard of stories from my relatives in Vietnam about being looked down by South Koreans in their own districts, restaurants and schools. It's sad to know that southeast Asians are looked down upon by East Asians :/

Yes that's a little bit sad, Some Vietnamese people had very bad behaviors in Korea and my country is much poorer than Eastern Asian countries. That's two main reasons they look down us. But truth be told I don't mind it too much. I believe they have right to do it. Vietnamese people have to change the bad behaviors and try to make their homeland richer. It's surely what we have to do for our country (Sorry my English sucks)

Fellow Vietnamese American here! It's really terrible that South Koreans dislike us so much. The irony is that there's a lot of Vietnamese who are into Korean culture (K-pop, food, dramas, etc.), but Koreans don't feel the same about us and reciprocate that kind of love. I know that it's not all Koreans that hate us, as I fact, a lot of Koreans visit Vietnam and live there, but the fact that the hate from some is even there at all is really sad.

Yes it's unfortunate but it seems such a herd mentality is rather common amongst the most Asians, largely divided by North East and South East Asians but even amongst the North East Asians and South East Asians themselves based on Political reason, Economical or cultural gaps etc... Chinese and the Koreans, Koreans and the Japanese, Vietnamese and Cambodians, Vietnamese and the Chinese, etc... But I believe majority are good people.

@@aznmochibunny Liking aspect of pop culture and other things has nothing to do with respect or anything. You can love aspect of a country or culture but the impression about the people are almost always stereotyped based on what you've heard (both negative and positive) and very personal and limited encounter you'll have with them. For example, I know that Vietnam and China have had very topsy-turvy relationship with deep-seated hate enough to explode into a riot that burned Chinese (or perceived to be Chinese) factories back few years ago. But does that mean you hate everything about the country? I doubt it. People are generally good in my opinion. We choose what we want to see.

It wasn't until recently, as a grown up, that I keep hearing people having impressions of Taichung being a dangerous place with gangsters... Compared to parts of the US though, Taichung is still really safe. I think as a whole Taiwan is just a really safe country (like Korea, Japan, etc.), but Taichung is probably considered less safe. The only way to stop bullying is to fight back, even if you lose. People keep bullying because a person becomes an easy target. Most bullies don't really want to put much effort into it, and they obviously don't want to get injured from something they started. When I first went to school in America in first grade , I didn't know any English but I did fight back to anyone that tried something. I never had problems with bullying by anyone after that and the upperclassmen who did try to bully me showed interest in me and Korean culture. I can't say they became my friends. After all, at such a young age, even one year in age is a big difference. But I never had any problems from them or anyone else in my entire academic career since.
