@@Mibs-Mibby although subtle there is a difference between F and H sounds in Japanese. I'm of korean descent and grew up abroad(well half) and there's actually quite a few kids who have some old fashioned names... especially those who's parents or grandparents immigrated before the 1990s. Like I've met a 승록, 효순, 병권, 이화 and a 순주... and they're all like kids/preteens or young adults. I honestly kind of prefer some of the old fashioned names compared to the modern ones tho haha. My own grandmother's name was 삼자 (mitsuko I think?) under occupation, but she only used it in school.

Interestingly, my folks' names and my own Japanese names have a lot of the old-school characteristics that Erina mentioned. My mom, from Tokyo, is named 愛子 (Aiko), which is a super traditional girl's name meaning "Child of love." My dad, from Okinawa, is 貞夫 (Sadao), an also traditional boy's name meaning "Honest man." When I was born in L.A., he bequeathed me the 貞 (sada) part of his name and prefixed it with one of old kanjis Erina brought up, 清 (kiyo), to form 清貞 (Kiyosada), which I hear from my Japanese friends sounds like an old samurai name. Weirdly, he liked the actor Kirk Douglas when I was born, so he gave me the first name of Kirk in English, which is impossible to pronounce in Japanese. The closest is カーク (Kaaku), which I still find hilarious to this day. I dare you to ask Erina to pronounce it 😋 Thanks for the fun vid!

In Russian there is a saying like "faith, hope, love" which sounds like "vera, nadezhda, lyubov" - and becaue of that it is also really popular as old girls names. Vera is coming back, nadezhda becomes Nadya which is either an old women or a bratty rich girl lol, and Lyubov is so so so so old! I swear every russian grandma had a normal name, but when they turned 60 they were given the name Lyubov, more specifically Lyuba! Is it the same in other languages? I know in English you could also name ur daughter Hope or Faith..
@gabrielaribeiro61553 жыл бұрын
Here in Portugal the name Vera is common in my age range (20's) but I don't think it was commonplace 50 years ago. Also relating to faith, "Maria da Fé" (Mary of faith) is a name associated with older women. Hope, "Esperança", also sounds like the name of an elderly woman, and some of my friends have grandmas with this name. I can't think of any name old or new that relates to the word love, "amor".

In Korea, the letter of the old name was repeated 'ja'. In the Japanese colonial period, Koreans had to change to the Japanese name. Then they wrote the most common letters. It was 'co'. 36 years later,Korea were independent and changed it back to Korean name. But they received only the Chinese letters, so Japan and Korea used the same last letter in the past.Even if the name is unconditioned, it was used.

All of the young Roberts I've ever met use their full name or Rob, but I know many Bobs as well. Heck, I work with three (two Bobs, one Bobby). I'm from Spain and the easiest ways to tell if a name is old school is counting how many syllables it has xD usually old school names for women are pretty long and have some kind of religious aspect like Asunción, Milagros, Esperanza, Dolores, Encarna… and men pretty much the same, they always have three or more syllables like Eustaquio, Gervasio, Constantino, Rogelio. So the trick is: long name = old name
