I decided to try and make a snow plow to fit on my riding mower. In the end, i feel like i may have over-did it a bit. I could have made it a lot simpler. But considering it didn't cost me anything, all the materials were scraps from the wood pile in my garage.
And i couldn't be happier with the result. Using a plow to clear off your driveway is so much easier then shoveling or pushing a snowblower.
It's 4 feet wide and 18 inches tall.

This is one of THE best videos I have seen for constructing homemade lawn mower snowplows. Thank you for putting together this video.

WOW! This video is exactly what I needed to see! I can see where this would work perfectly for me in many ways. Being light weight it's perfect for small garden tractors and persons like me with very serious back problems. Also this method makes it super easy to put a plow on an old obsolete garden tractor. No one makes the plow mounting hardware for my machine. As for plowing, I've learned that plowing is usually better than snow blowing. We get heavy wet snow in the early weeks of winter and snow blowers hate this condition. My two-stage snowblower clogs up and is almost useless. A plow works better if used before the snow gets too deep. Just move it when it's a few inches deep and repeat as more comes. Like you stated, just push it to the side. All these years and I've struggled with those finicky snowblowers.

It's probably lighter then a steel plow, but it's not light. At least mine wasn't. You can make it as light as you want though. Also using a plastic 55 gallon barrel as the face, with a wood frame would be better i think.

You can paint the wood with used motor oil. That treats the wood and looks good too.

Hi Dave , I like the simplicity, ingenuity and use of materials"at hand". I'm in Manitoba ( first snow this morning) and thinking of trying this. How is your transmission holding up? I think the blade could be that dayglow orange stuff, flourescene or similar, let em know you are coming! LOL.

I never had a problem. But i was very conscious not to "push" it too hard. On a day where there was a heavy wet snow the riding mower, rope tire chains, and plow struggled. I actually got out my snowblower and did a pass down the middle of the driveway first. That way i was able to just push a little at a time with the plow. Unless the snow was light and fluffy and less than 4" i didn't like pushing with the entire blade. I usually just pushed with 1/2 or 1/4 of the blade at a time.

I like this idea quite a bit, as my snowblower has broke. I have a gravel driveway so I may use some wide PVC plastic as skids or ski's and wax them. I noticed you have removed the cutting deck, was that necessary? No big deal as your not cutting grass at the same time.
@DaveWirth
@DaveWirth 4 жыл бұрын
removing the cutting deck is necessary for me because i'm using the front brackets to hold the plow. so it's either one or the other.

I might buy a used Prolan PP19A42 42 in. 19 HP.....would I be able to use your same makeshift shovel to that mower? I don’t want to assume, all basic riding mowers can have the snow shovel attachment can be made. Help!!??

Worked great for 2 years, then i upgraded the riding mower. So this year i just bought a used plow for $50 that fits a John Deere.

Towards the end of the video I see you were able to move some deeper snow a little at a time which is fine because I think this is a real effortless time saver anyway no matter how much one grabs. I can buy a 2' x 4' piece of PVC board at Menards so I may use that instead of plywood. I may make the angle a little more than 22 degrees. Also maybe put a curved piece of corrugated drain pipe cut in half lengthwise on the top edge, and maybe a 3" rigid pvc pipe cut in half lengthwise for a skid on the bottom. Did you try this first without the tire chains ? I was going to make it 3 ft. long but I need to check the width of both tires and make it a bit longer than that otherwise the tires will go into un-plowed snow.

I've since tried to wax the face of the plywood, didn't really help. I still get snow sticking to the face of the board instead of sliding off. A plastic or melamine board would work better. Making the angle more than 22 degrees, like you said, is also a good idea and would help the snow to slide off as well. I'm happy with the plastic edging on the bottom. It was free and slides nicely. But anything like that would work. I've never tried it without chains, but i doubt it would work well. Even with my rope chains, when the snow is heavy and wet the tires spin. Again, i have a lawn tractor, not a garden tractor. My transmission is not designed for low gearing and high torque so i don't want to stress it and have it break. And i'm happy with the blade width. I can get my whole driveway in 4 passes, even with the overlap, and yes any narrower and the tires would be on snow, which wouldn't work well.

how did you make the plow movable with the nut tight?
@DaveWirth
@DaveWirth 3 жыл бұрын
The 2 nuts that attach the plow to the mower were a little loose so that the plow could be lifted. But the face of the plow itself is fixed at that 20 degree angle.

A plow made from plywood. Call it Plow Wood.

I would only consider this as a temporary solution until I could afford a real plow. The reason snowplows or snowblowers attach at the front and back is to help prevent bending the frame of your tractor. My father bent his and he had a hard time connecting any attachments on it. The plow for my tractor was less than $300 which is not that expensive considering the snow blower costs $1300 which is almost as much as the tractor new also it mounts front and back.
