Glue softens up with heat. Exception is the stuff they put military jets together with and resorcinol (boat building stuff). A few seconds of the soldering iron on a glued in screw could help. About 150 degrees F. That's just at the point you don't want to hold your finger on it.

When you have a loose screw hole in wood, how do you repair? In woodworking projects we take sawdust and mix with epoxy glue for small cracks, scratches, holes, etc. On larger situations we drill a larger hole and insert a wood dowel with glue, so that we start fresh. Thanks for your expertise, when working on the guitar.

as far as twisting the pos and neg leads together it reduces interference, "bleed over" or "cross talk", in a low voltage ckt. the more twists the better. I'm no guitar tech, but I am an electrician with 30 years of experience. Dave or someone else probably already mentioned that

For the first time Gibson is offering those 760 blade style real deal Thunderbird pickups that I really like. And I’m a guitar player, not a bassist. I do like a great sounding bass, though. That's a very good point Dave, kit vs Squier with upgrades ! The ready made off the shelf option is finished to a pretty good standard and is a very well respected guitar. It's certainly worth adding better pickups and electronics to it and you might as well throw on a better bridge and tuners too but those are the kind of upgrades you can do in stages when you have the money. When you build a kit there is no point wasting money on cheap components that you intend to replace at a later date, so if money is an issue you start assembling the kit before you buy the components and add them later. I think the main issue is can you put a kit together and finish it to the same standard as the Squier or better and how long will that take ?

I got a P-Bass kit from Solo and added everything as you did, from tuners to Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound pickups, CTS pots, Orange Drop cap, Tusq nut, push wires, Swttchcraft jack, Fender bridge. Great Bass! The sound is outstanding!!! An easy finish for the neck is Tru Oil; the same thing you use on rifle stocks. It's not sticky like polyurethane; easy to apply; easy to buff out.

Hi Dave, great video once again. I was wondering with that stripped stuck bridge screw, do you think that using the soldering Iron to warm up the head a bit to soften the glue/finish to help release the screw could have helped? I just put a 4 way switch and a set of Twang King pickups on my Squire, ah I also put a compensated bridge. The frets are sadly pretty worn and I'm debating replacing the neck. How much do you spend to improve a cheaper guitar when the Fender will play like new and you would never get the value of those improvements.

What you should've said about soLdering onto pots, is to WAIT and let the iron get nice and hot before even thinking about soLdering. It's waiting for the iron to get hot enough to soLder, and if you're touching the back of the pot all that time, then too much heat is being transferred, which is what kills the pots. If you wait until it's properly hot, then the immediate contact should be enough to transfer the required heat without excessive build-up. Separate explanatory note. I wrote soLder because as we get oLder, we don't get oDDer.

Had a friend who bought a 2006 Epiphone Casino. He put Seymour Duncan Antiquities P90's in it, put Grovers on it, put stainless steel frets on it, replaced all the pots and wiring on it, a new bone nut, and a Gibson ABR-1 bridge as well. The total cost, including the guitar, was around $1300.00. The guitar is actually awesome and can do anything from the Stones to Ted Nugent.
@ian-c.01
@ian-c.01 5 ай бұрын
Epiphone guitars come from the factory in a semi ready state, they require a little finishing but most people just expect them to be ready for gigging straight out of the box and that leads to disappointment. The electronics are average at best, they are OK for practicing but can be a little noisy and the pickups are functional but weak. The necks and frets always need leveling so you can get the action down to a playable height but I wouldn't go as far as a refret unless they were really bad.

Based on an "Affinity" level Squier (because of the Indonesian build), could he, or anyone, just go to the next level of "Classic Vibe" and saved money and time? With the improvements Dave has made, what would the "level" of this guitar be, either Squier or Fender?

"The one thing (insert profession, manufacturer etc.) don't want you to know, or the "Secret/hidden feature/use they don't want you to know, etc, etc. It just gets old because I've never been around a professional of any sort that said, "Turn around, I'm going to do something I don't want you to see or learn." I've never seen a "Hidden feature" on a tool that I can't imagine a manufacturer would install then not want anyone to know about it for some reason. Leo was all about making an affordable instrument for the masses. Fender was never meant to be a high end instrument, but a utilitarian tool. I don't really understand the attraction of American Fenders. What are you paying for? They have all the same construction and features as every budget electric guitar that copies them, with slightly nicer hardware and finish. But it's expensive so you won't want to mod it or give it the tough love a real Fender style guitar deserves. My 1996 Squire has stories to tell, it's missing a ton of finish, it's rough as hell, and i will die with it. If it was an American strat it wouldn't have been through all that.
