I got one this year at age 49. I'm a fan of a sorts car that doesn't consume much fuel and not too powerful because I lose self control.. it's safer then for me and my family to drive. Good weekend driver. Reliable and safe design much better than regular sedans..i don't want the gr86.. too much for us. If i want car that powerful n stiff id buy a bonafide sports car. I wish toyota gives rather an option on engine n ride comfort for gr86.

This car while beautiful it lacks something. Very few are out in the street and the only one that has somewhat caught my attention is the pearl white. But it seems like Toyota lacks something in their modern designs. It seems like they are trying hard to cut corners to save money, the car interior feels extremely hollow, cheap, as if all efforts were meant to save money no matter what. The golden era of japanese “ sports “ cars was without doubt the 1980’s-1990’s The real Top Dogs were heavily enthusiasts involved in all aspects of production, and design in their cars. Most important they were heavily competitive trying to Japan as a top caliber competitor in the world and I believe they did! Todays cars especially Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas feel like they are disposable hollow cheap efforts to make money instead of masterpieces.

I don't think this car has aged well. 2019 Mazda Miata with its upgraded power will really put the 86 back even further. Toyota is just so lazy. The car doesn't need power, it needs torque. The comparison to the S14 and S15 was a bit unfair in my opinion as you ignored torque. S15 had more torque
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
I hear ya re the torque thing Blake, but S14 and S15 also have a turbocharger ;-) I don't mind the look, but if I had my own 86, I think it'd have the BRZ headlights and likely a Rocket Bunny kit... because I'm an idiot haha.

cool shirt mate...I really like this car, but I like its twin, the BRZ better. Yes, 97% of the cars are the same and the US has slightly different colors and trim packages, but the BRZ does it better for me than the 86. I like toyota colors (Neptune and Ocean), but the WR Blue is just fine in the BRZ. Add some gold/bronze wheels, some '555' decals and done. As good as the GT-S/Limited trims and the PP package is, I'm more of a GT/Premium person even though the higher trims and yet higher packaged cars get some good stuff, I think the base trim has plenty and don't ruin the driver experience or actual operation of the car. US$28k-29k is where the car I want falls as opposed to US$31k-33k for the more optioned ones.

The problem I found with the Cayman (which I actually set out to buy before ending up with an 86), is that I needed to be driving at illegal speeds before it came alive and fun, whereas the 86 is fun at legal speeds. Unfortunately, the Cayman doesn't come with an exemption from the traffic rules...
@BlatentlyFakeName6 жыл бұрын
Yea with cars like the Cayman your fun is limited on the road. You need to drive it fast to explore the limits as it will just grip and grip and being mid engined it's much scarier if you lose grip (as it will want to spin). But the gt86 will happily drift around corners all day long at 15mph if you want :P

86 or Mx5 NC which would you pick and why?
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Hey R FlorezD, good question but if it's a choice between an 86 or an NC MX-5, I'd take the 86 easily. If it's a choice between an 86 or an ND MX-5, I could find it a little tougher, but even then I'd go with the 86 - I prefer the seating position in the 86 and I like having backseats. Then again, I could save more money and just buy an original NA MX-5... now that'd be fun :D What do you drive?
@BlatentlyFakeName6 жыл бұрын
I had an MX-5 NC and the gt86 is definitely a better car. The MX-5 didn't handle nearly as well and it was quite a soft sports car really. The gt86 is less compromising and aimed more at purists. But if you want a convertible the MX-5 is still the best choice out there tbh
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree with you more I'm an Idiot. The MX-5 is such a fun car and the open top is great, but I've always preferred the 86 over it - just more 'me'.

I wonder when Toyota is going to bump up the power in the 86 that would be sweet.....
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Hey Darryl Flowers, well it did receive a small increase as part of the 2017 update - from 147kW to 152kW - but not sure I'd be holding my breath for much more. Perhaps a second-gen 86 will have more on tap, but we'll have to wait and see.
@JMB18915 жыл бұрын
New one on the way for 2020, probably with a decent power upgrade.
@Malapropify6 жыл бұрын
Very nice, and professional review. I had the pleasure of owning a BRZ and had this for a weeks test - I cannot agree with you on the torque dip. It's still there! It's even shown on the "current power" meter. I think this car is a complete letdown. It was supposed to be a "new" car, not just a minor facelift. All of the things done here can be done in the old models for around 4-5k USD total. I'm still waiting for the 2.3 that they told they would be making. This car needed 30-40 hp more. I'd recommend you drive one with a modified exhaust, intake and ECU'd. This car doesn't need turbo, it needs to breath better and drive on good quality fuel. Completely different experience. Either way, you earned yourself a sub!
@Malapropify6 жыл бұрын
Also, forgot to say. The FA20 engines have very unequal power output, some of them make 180 hp, some do 210. It feels like Toyota is outright trying to scam us.
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Hi Malapropify, I don't believe the 2018 86 was ever supposed to be a new second-generation car, simply an update to the existing one, but I hear ya re some of the changes being quite minor. I've heard a lot of people talk about this 2.3-litre, but I think if any engine should go in there, the WRX's 2.0-litre turbo makes the most sense. Either way, it's a fun car now and is only likely to get better over time... provided Toyota doesn't can the model that is :(

@itzjaysee3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveZalstein Considering buying one. I want a fun daily that i can also slide. I love the history behind the 86. Mostly the reason why I really like this car, is the amount of effort they put into low centre of gravity and weight distribution. As much I wanted a Toyota engine in or more power. I think that the car will respond to good drivers as one of the executives mentioned.

As in the same "fake" as a 5.0 Mustang, Focus ST or many Merc AMG models? Then yes.
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sorry jasfest, Malapropify is spot on. The noise isn't so much 'fake' or 'synthesised' like it is on some BMW models (for example), it's simply 'enhanced' via some plastic piping from the air intake. Not fake, just made more prominent.

@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Haha, really Jacob Mees? Interesting. What don't you like about the newer cars? Looks or other things? I'm intrigued...
@jacobmees80406 жыл бұрын
Mostly the anesthetics. It's nice they've improved the torque dip and final drive ratio, but that's also very easily rectified with headers and a tune on any 86. The new dash/steering wheel goes against the wonderful minimialistic approach to the car. That little display makes my OCD rage... especially when the 2015 BRZ is basically the perfect/ideal 90's Japanese import style cluster with the orange background and simple gauges. Aesthetically, the new bumper is just horrible looking imo, and then adding on the 86 badge to the side of the car is tacky, the new tail lights... while I don't like the old, are also not great. Especially compared to the Valenti Revo's. That carbon trim you pointed out... also tacky... mainly since it doesn't match anything else to the interior changes. I do like that they are doing the padding on the knee area's from the factory now though, and the dash hood. Just... generally I like the simpler look and feel of the original cars over the modern ones. Mostly though, it's that tacky little dash screen that's split inside multiple gauges :)
@jacobmees80406 жыл бұрын
Also, just wanted to say a fantastic video and over-view of the changes as well!
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
All really fair and valid points mate, and well clarified. I hate buttons on the steering wheel too, so I'd always lean towards a base GT and not a GTS (but then you miss out on the knee pads). Really appreciate the positive feedback too man. Glad you're digging the vids :D

I test drove a newish BRZ and the seats were very uncomfortable and had some of the worst road noise out of any car that I've ever driven. Is the 86 better in these aspects? Important because this would be a daily driver
@DaveZalstein6 жыл бұрын
Hi Zozo, as far as I'm aware, most of those elements will likely be identical in the 86. Road noise can be affected by the type of tyre fitted to the car, so that may have played a part, but personally anyway, I've never found the seats in an 86 all that uncomfortable at all.
