I listen to your podcast on Spotify but came to KZbin to leave this comment. Thank so you much for voicing your opinion on skidrow and the drug users there. I work as a firefighter in Toronto and we have the same problem and most people don’t understand that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. Like you said life is a game of choices and the vast majority choose that life. There’s also the choice and plenty of opportunities/programs of becoming clean but they don’t want it. We (firefighters and EMS alike) chose this job to help others and it’s easy to become apathetic when so many of your calls come from repeated patients going through drug overdoses, sometimes multiple in one day.

You guys are spot on with the homeless problem on the west coast. Moved to Portland from a small town in Michigan and was very naive to it. But, my first job was at a mini mart in downtown. Met lots of homeless people from all walks of life. Ex vets now transgender, sweet drunks that would bring me crystals and roses and tell me that they would guard the store, guys with $1000+ cash in their wallet and then sleeping in a tent at night. Very illuminating and realized how I used to see homeless people as a monolith. But nothing jarred me more than when I was working an early AM shift alone. A homeless guy covered in dry blood comes walking in trying to buy a beer. He is pale as a ghost and shows me an open gunshot wound on his side. Immediately I buy him a water, muffin, he buys the beer, and I give him money to get a cab to the hospital. I call the cab for him. Ask him if I should call 911 and he says he doesn’t want me to. I beg him to just go to the hospital. Even had to beg him to take the water. Anyway, he leaves. 15 min later. He comes back to the store with the $15 I had given him for the cab and buys the nicest pack of cigarettes he could get. With no shame. Dead in my eyes. After that, I realized I was an idiot.

As someone who worked in the community. I get it. It opened my eyes, that a big part of it is their mental health and sometimes it takes more than what we can give to help them. I became very negative too. But I'm understanding now that I am not met to understand what I am not called for. So if you feel called to help drug addicts you do you, don't pressure people who don't share your values if they don't get it.

I'm so glad you're safe. My heart and soul go out to the people in LA. I even have family living there. I should say that comedy itself is not the issue, it's often the pain of what others experience regarding what they're connected to no matter how close or far. It's unfortunate that we haven't figured out how to heal ourselves no matter what joke is made by comedians, and I'm a huge fan of many people like Josh Johnson and you.

There are definitely some people to blame for the responsibilities of their lack of actions they were to uphold on preventing a disaster like these fires. There was another reason I would say people are realizing that was apart of the hydrant water pressure issues was the residents yards before the fires were all the sprinkler systems still activate while the fires were happening, and they didn't have time to shut them off to give some of water pressure back to the fire hydrants for the firefighters to use. - Not providing support to the forest management to clean up the surrounding land brush and vegetation clearing i.e. control fires. It is important and a good thing because California itself has a natural cycle and people took that away to not let regrowth occur. Look it up, the facts are there. - LADWP and state water mismanagement for access water being sent to the ocean when it could have been captured and stored for situations like this... the Pacific Palisades reservoir needed to be fixed but wasn't done soon enough to keep the water. - State fire insurance BS... state system got greedy. - Powerline safety: Old power supply stations not replaced, renovated, or fixed correctly. - Cutting CAL Fire/County fire fighter funding making it difficult for them to have enough resources to do more than what's happening right now. ... They chose not to do these things so they could be held with potential crinimal negligence. Prop 1 in 2014 should have solved some of the water supply issues... and nothing happened.

I don't freak out about fires. Even with the major ones like in Malibu never really freaked out until the Sunset (which i believe was a bush fire), Eaton and Pali. The sheer terror that I felt was horrifying. I live give or take about 23 min away from the fire and i have the fire tracking app. When main Hollywood area (Dolby theater, Hollywood Walk of Fame, etc) was next to the evacuation zone, immediately called my parents that I'm keeping alert and that we may have to go to the evacuation center in Pan Pacific Park (didn't help that there was ANOTHER mini fire in front of my street). In my mind, i was thunking about my parents and this gigantic red emergency backpack that i prepared for us since June. I was thinking to myself "I didn't think that I had to use you now." And another thing. DTLA smelled like ash everywhere. I was coughing and trying to get to work only for the company tol tell me to go back home lol. The sheer amount of terror that I felt especially for some of my friends who work in Altadena, was stomach churning.

Exactly the local elections are one of the main problems in this country period no matter what side it’s just counties upon counties just stacked with local politicians who are incompetent
@daheerohКүн бұрын
13:30. EXACTLY. THIS. Yes presidential elections are important because you're determining the future of a country but where you live alone as an local in whatever city or town is just as important. Looking through qualified people, knowing what you support, etc ehould be yhe foundation of who you want to elect to represnet you and specially where you're living. And in the homeless issue, LA alone spends about 500k on per homeless. ProPublica did an investigation on this. Greedy government officials that are literally siphoning money away from programs that are already there into theor own LLC's is a huge problem. The city od LA needs to priotize on weeding out who's draining who and hire people suited for the job.

The way LA is on fire, I’d walk around with one of those plant pump water sprayer just in case. Heck, invest it one of those backpack spray for weed control but just fill it with water if you go smoke. If anything, at least you can spray yourself down so you don’t catch yourself in fire -just make sure no one put any accelerant in it to sabotage you! 😆Also, you’re a dad and you about burnt down your whole family. 😳 Good one. 😅 Anyway, stay safe guys.

What’s really interesting to me is that the reduction in budget was incorrect. The fire department actually ended up getting 50mil extra. Also, the two women were on the hot seat when these areas have their own mayors and it’s in LA county areas so the LA county Fire Chief should have been the one interviewed.
@danhpham386Күн бұрын
There was an interview that the fire chief herself saying that budgets were cut and they were under resourced. Take it as it is it came straight from her mouth. If they actually did get 50 mil then the question would be what did they do with it?
@sdm90192 күн бұрын
Didn't they take out water reservoirs to help salmon and didn't they not fill up the reservoirs that they had to fill up. Don't they let rain water go into the ocean. They don't do control forest fires clean the forests bc of environmentalists.

The LA fires are not "natural" disasters 😅thats why the buck stops somewhere i.e. the mayor and the governor there must be accountability right? David did say that this is a yearly occurence especially this time where there are multiple fires. It can definitely be prevented.

all I hear are excuses. No one ever takes accountability. Why do the hydrants not have water?
@edparkvp54655 сағат бұрын
25:21 The lowest class fire hydrant has enough pressure to spew 500 gallons per minute. where does the pressure from the hydrants come from? How do you generate such force? Los Angeles has many hills, so they put water tanks at the top of these hills to use gravity and mass to provide free energy to flow downhill to the hydrants. About 10,000 acres burned the first night alone. Every single boot, truck, ladder and hose was out there using all the hydrants at once. When all the water from the towers are depleted, how do you get water back uphill? Water pumps. Water pumps require energy. What happened to the electricity? It went out because of 60mph winds that first night. The exposed wires from utility poles were severed and exposed, cutting power AND sparking the fires. Worst case scenario happened, and it sounds like you're not asking for accountability as much as you want to point a finger and blame someone. You hear excuses, I hear a chain of events. Who is accountable for the hydrants being out of water? The power lines? My opinion, Replacing utility/telephone poles for a citywide underground system (like the rest of the world) would cost tens of billions over decades and LA has had other things to worry about over the decades to even bring this up. I am pro underground utility network, but many other factors could have still caused these fires. You’re gonna have to blame every single mayor from 100 years ago.

Pretty bad take, the FD was over budget the previous year so they should get a budget cut? Shouldn’t that tell you they NEED more budget not a cut? The FD was saying their trucks weren’t even properly equipped. So yes it is Newsom and Bass’ fault because they are our LEADERS. Nothing gets approved without them. Yes the wildfire would’ve still happened and rhe strong winds definitely would’ve caused a lot of damage. But a lot more structures could’ve been saved had there been enough water and properly equipped trucks.
@sweetpopism6 сағат бұрын
So there has been explanation for this. They've confirmed that the reason why there was an excess was because last year they purchased all the "one off" purchases,meaning that they're only purchased every year and not included Every year. The budget was also in the middle of negotiations (during a time where Californians, myself included, a fire would be very out of season and is unexpected) to INCREASE their budget. Yes we can be angry but let's be angry for the right reasons.
@ambition29594 сағат бұрын
@ out of season? There’s a fire every year though. There’s been fires for the past thousands years. For the last 2 decades California has been under threat of massive wild fires. Trump in his first term even told everyone that there’s an ongoing problem with dry debris and water shortage and a huge wild fires was eminent. All the signs were given, yet nothing was done. So we are mad for a reason. We are mad at the people responsible for California. We are mad at the FD chiefs who prioritized DEI hiring and commercials instead of focusing on prevention. All the warnings were there idk who else you’d blame? Trump? Some politician from the red state? Who do you blame?

people don’t want to admit this but the homeless people setting things on fire is in the same vain as the luigi kid who shot the UnitedHealth CEO in the back. i’ve said it before esp when i lived in LA that people in LA would rather feed homeless cat that a homeless person. Homeless people have now started to see this moment as their oppurtunity for whatever kind of revenge they can get now. the countless videos i’ve seen of people starting fires in LA are wild and speaks to how inhumane Los Angeles has become as they’ve always done things for optics like how Beverly Hills relocated the homeless to skid row. Cali needs to stop voting in these people that don’t care about human beings who only care about their social justice issues. at this point these LA fires are only more justification to say DEI kills as these fires and poor government management have led to literal deaths.
