All art is generosity by nature and artists are doing us a service. It takes a lot of sacrifices both material and spiritual to afford living the artist life and putting oneself out there. Francis of Asisi comes to mind as an artist archetype. And to make such sacrifices while “mentally ill” as you put it, just makes me more grateful, inspires me, and most of all, it proves that no matter your shortcomings you can still strive to lead an ethical life.

its hard to listen to David anymore, just knowing that the path he was on resulted in such tragedy makes it hard to see the value in the art. Kind of like Kerouac and Co.
