• DRUMS ONLY! David Bowi...
Here you'll see Matt Flacche playing the drums to "Blue Jean" by David Bowie. The video was shot in 720p, at 60fps for better motion capture, while the audio was recorded using Focusrite Clarett 8PreX and Clarett OctoPre interfaces, and mixed with Reaper DAW. In this video, Matt created some fresh original drum parts to breath new life into this 80's classic.

Uh, I absolutely love your new drum set. I keep coming back to your channel every other year to see what's new, great to see you back in the Tama family. I have a Superstar Hyperdrive myself and absolutely love it. I'd love to get a Starclassic Performer B/B one day, or maybe even one of the Star series, but I have to earn it first. I'm looking forward for more stuff, keep up the great work ^^.

Thanks. I like the Superstar Hyperdrive kits very much. You can only get SC B/B used now, or leftover, if any dealers still have them, as they are discontinued. The replacements, Starclassic Birch/Walnut, are really nice. I have the limited edition with the exotic cedar outer ply, and it looks/sounds great!

@@flacche I love my Superstar, I'd argue it's the best kit you can get for that price, definitely a lot of quality for a mid range set. And of course it comes with all the advantages Tama offers. I wanted to custom order an 8 and 13 tom, but worried they might not offer it. They did it without hesitation and even included some stands and a nice pair of Iron Cobras in the delivery even though it wasn't part of my order, what a great company. As for the Starclassic, we'll see. I have an awesome local store with connections all over the world, I'm sure they could find a Performer B/B somwhere. If not, then Walnut/Birch definitely wouldn't be half bad either. But I'm still a student, and for now the Superstar is more than enough.

Awesome man! Drums are looking and sounding great. Strange overhead mic positioning, but doesn't matter, sounds great. You have a Rolls Royce of a kit there, nice choice, congrats!!
@flacche
@flacche 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nick! The rationale for the positioning of my overheads was to get them away from the China cymbals a little, so they don't overpower the mix. My engineering mentor checked the phase of the overheads, and said they were near perfect, so my measuring worked ;)

Matt, I've been following your videos for a couple of years. The new kit looks amazing... still big, but looks more refined and simpler rack and cymbal set up than your Pearl kits! I'm looking at buying a new kit for the first time in 20+ years... I'm hoping to model it after your set up. I was thinking of either Pearl Session Studios or Tama Starclassic Performers... those are in my price range. I know you had different models of each company, but which did you prefer more - for sound and hardware, etc. Really enjoy your videos!
@flacche
@flacche 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael. Thanks for the kind words. If you're talking about Session Studios or Starclassic B/B, they are both nice, but I would choose the Starclassics over the Session Studios for a couple reasons. Firstly, Tama's hardware is several notches above Pearl's in my opinion, especially considering the two lines of drums you mentioned. The Starclassic tom mounts and memory locks are superior to Pearl's. As far as the shells go, I like the Session Studio birch/mahogany shells. They are thin, and make for a nice deep, rich tone when you play. However, the Starclassic shells are just as nice. The bubinga interiors serve a very similar purpose to the mahogany inner plies. If it comes down to finish, and you like the Session Studios better, go for it. Both models are very good, I just feel the Starclassics edge out the Session Studios. Do you think the refined look of my new kit has anything to do with removing the distracting logos from the cymbals and heads?

Matt, thanks for getting back to me, and I appreciate the advice. I actually would prefer the Tama, but I'm having trouble finding their rack system online, via Guitar Center, Sweetwater, etc. The Starclassics cost a bit more, but it's not like jumping up to DW! I have a late 1980's set of Pearls that have seen better days, but kids, mortgage, etc. were priority... kids are almost grown up and now my 13 year old son began drum lessons earlier this year. My wife has actually encouraged me to treat myself... plus, my son will get to use the kit as well! I can't say if it's just removing the logos from cymbals... the rack looks more streamlined, toms look lower/closer to the bass drums and you appear to sit more over the toms (which I find more comfortable) - everything looks like they are within a reach and makes your playing look relaxed/effortless. Your Pearl kits looked well planned out and organized, but this just looks more refined. If you have a vendor to order Tama rack and parts from, please feel free to pass it along. Regards!

As far as Tama hardware and rack parts, don't try to go through the big-box retailers. Go through a Tama dealer. I recommend Bentley's Drum Shop, Drum Center of Portsmouth, Dale's Drum Shop, or Fork's Drum Closet. Any of those dealers will work with you, and help you put a complete order together, along with a nice discount!

Beautiful drum set Matt. What made you switch from Pearl to Tama?
@flacche
@flacche 5 жыл бұрын
I've played Tama drums since 1983... they are my voice. I only tried Pearl drums when I found out about their custom (Masterworks) program. The Pearl drums are nice, but I ran into multiple quality control, and communication issues. Now I'm back home with Tama drums, and they're a little more open to custom requests, as you can see from my new kit.

Nice drum kit Matt. What happened to the pearl kit you had and why did you change ?
@flacche
@flacche 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Curtis. I've played Tama since 1982/1983-ish... I tried Pearl drums for a while, because of the custom ordering possibilities, but they didn't turn out like I hoped. Tama drums fit me like a glove... I love'em!

Yeah I understand that because I've been Looking at some different kits and haven't found many in my price range that I could order extra drums for in the same color. I've settled on going with the Gretsch Catalina maple kit because I can order them directly from Gretsch and they will all be the same. Going to order a couple of extra toms when I order the 7 piece kit. Anyway keep on playing and maybe I will put mine on here when I get them.
@flacche

Yeah... get all your drums made together at the same time - that's the way to have everything match perfectly. When cats get add-ons, sometimes they match (which is total luck) or they are off a little, which is unsettling.

I see you got a new acoustic kit! Tama this time!!?? I know you had some misgivings regarding your previous custom Pearl kits. What wood construction is this kit and how do you feel about it so far in comparison to your previous Pearl kits? How was your experience in ordering a custom Tama kit vs. ordering your previous custom Pearl kits? Thanks for the info in advance and I look forward to hearing more covers from you soon!!!

I did have issues with how both of my Masterworks kits turned out. They were fine, but more errors were made while making those kits, than actually correct drums hahaha. This is a set of Tama Starclassic Bubinga drums, made in Japan. The concert toms, rack toms and floor toms are 6mm thick, 8-ply bubinga, and the timbale, snare, gong drum and kick drums are 7mm thick, 8-ply bubinga. Coming back to Tama has been great! I'm working on new videos! Make sure you're subscribed so you see when I post my next video, which is this tune, DRUMS ONLY!
