I remember the day David Bowie died. I woke up next to my then-girlfriend. She was a huge David Bowie fan, I was (and still am) a huge Brian Eno fan, and tried to make her discover the latter. Strange how paths meet and diverge, funny how I ended here tonight. Wishing you all a pleasant journey.

Those Bowie/Eno albums were something else. For what it's worth, they were the finest produced and creative works Bowie ever got involved with. Credit to him for allowing Eno, Frip et al the freedom to explore and be so creative. The ads are a DISASTER.

I hear all kinds of things I know are not there. People used to say it was too simple, not enough happening but as someone who makes ambient music, I can tell I have aimed for this standard but it's a high bar to reach, if it is even reachable. I miss David Bowie so much. This is meditative, cool and swirling in pathos.

I have loved the whole album forever and wondered if people ignored the instrumental side because to me it's so fantastic. This extended version first of all is simply slowed down somewhat to stretch the time and then appears to just be looped albeit very well. If it's "official" and can be purchased it would be wonderful to know how to get it.

@marionow62274 жыл бұрын
@paul w that would depend on your definition of 'meditation'
@marionow62274 жыл бұрын
@paul w paul w Well, any definition of anything is personal and subjective I would argue. Anyhow, I am curious as to what your definition of meditation is and why you think it is the proper one?
@marionow62274 жыл бұрын
@paul w paul w thanks for sharing the video, I appreciate that and I watched it with interest. You know there are actually types of meditation where one doesnt shut out the sense world? Such as the buddhist vipassana meditation, also called insight meditation. Absorption also is important in vipassana, but only up to a certain point.
@marionow62274 жыл бұрын
@paul w well that depends on your definition of absorption (there we go again 😊). In buddhism absorption, in the sense of an experience in which one is completely shut off from sensory input, such as in jhanic meditation, is not the end goal. That is freedom of suffering, or nirwana. And in Theravada buddhism there is actually a lot of discussion about the importance of absorption. Some argue that jhanic meditation which leads to samadhi (absorption) is the most important meditation, others would say satipatthana vipassana. But most would agree that both should be practiced. Some 'heretics' even argue that samadhi is wrongfully translated in English as 'concentration', and that 'composure' would be a better word...
@marionow62274 жыл бұрын
@paul w maybe you are right, maybe not. KZbin comment section conversations are not the best way to either express oneself or to understand what someone else means exactely. But thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights.

So. There does not exist, in this universe, a more passionate fan of these two dudes - Bowie since 72 (Spiders tour!) and Eno since Airports. However: David Bowie learns one riff on a shimisen and Eno creates a landscape for it? I love these guys - I do not love this piece. Peace out.
