In 1993, it was true. Today, not so much. Bowie always had his finger on the pulse of interesting movements in music and art. Whether creating it himself or admiring that of others, he remained keenly aware of what was the current state of art and music. Nearly 30 years later, Hip Hop is further away from that incomparable era as Rock and Roll was from the late 60’s at the time this was recorded.

Every to charting artist is a sellout in some way. If you're looking at the top 40 you're gonna find shitty music, but a lot of good rap music has been made in the underground and experimental rap scene. Albums like The Money Store by Death Grips, Some Rap Songs by Earl Sweatshirt, War In My Pen by MIKE, Veteran by JPEGMAFIA, Little Dominique's Nosebleed by Koreatown Oddity, etc are really quality and not "sellout". Even some popular rappers have released some great work. (Igor by Tyler The Creator, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West, To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, etc.)

We all know blacks created rap/hip-hop and R&B because thankfully the genres are yet to be fully co-opted by white folk

imma double comment real quick to add that electronic music isn’t purely black in origin, although genres like house music have roots in it. there’s a lot of electronic genres, some black in origin, but it’s not as concrete.

Don’t matter if you agree or not: the music industry as we knew it is dead. The 90s was the last great decade for all genres. There are a few obscure artist today......but nothing as good as what the past gave us.

El entrevistador mencionó que Bowie dijo en una entrevista previa que él (Bowie) pensaba que mucha de la creatividad dentro de la música en ese momento venía de los artistas rap, y Bowie reiteró que el público blanco se había maximizado creativamente, y que las audiencias negras e hispanas tomaron las riendas de transmitir mensajes sociales en la música.
