All of them had the look of "If I win I got to go up there and meet that guy, oh lord". It was said that Bowie was very insulted that Aretha made that comment about kissing Bowie, he was trying very hard to become more mainstream and "normal" in the US and he felt that set him back. I remember watching this live back when it was broadcast. This was at the height of Bowie's fling with cocaine, you can really tell too. And when he walked out, those guys in the orchestra pit were looking at each other like "what the hell?". Back then he was considered pretty much like an alien being.

@diana3lade4702 жыл бұрын
@@LonesomeCowgirl I just looked it up, apparently he did take it that way. Based on how he described it, he said: “I ripped open the envelope and announced, “The winner is Aretha Franklin.” Aretha steps forward, and with not so much as a glance in my direction, snatches the trophy out of my hands and says, “Thank you everybody. I’m so happy I could even kiss David Bowie.” Which she didn’t! And she promptly spun around, swanned off stage right. So I slunk off stage left” Most of what he described didn’t happen the way he says but he gets a free pass because he was a coke addict at the time lol
@LonesomeCowgirl2 жыл бұрын
@@diana3lade470 I had to watch it again and your explanation (or his) makes sense. I had missed her intonation and thought she'd meant it was so good BECAUSE she could kiss David Bowie, which didn't sound like that, but she realized it and added "I mean it in a good way". It was pretty akward, actually, but I think she could have made up for it if she had turned to him before she left and blown him a kiss or actually kissed him...
