November 10, 1983: David Bowie pops in unexpectedly to chat to Don on his last ever show.
This clip already exists on YT but the quality is not very good so I thought I would share a better version. I recently discovered another interview with David from Australia's "Countdown" program conducted by Molly Meldrum also in 1983. I'm not sure if there will be issues with viewing from outside Oz but here's the link: iview.abc.net.au/show/rewind/...

It made me kinda emotional seeing how absolutely buzzed Don was. I mean, he looked like he'd just met the Pope, Louis Armstrong and Groucho Marx rolled into one. And what a lovely thing for David to do, show up like that more or less out of the blue. So sweet. So special. What a special, truly special and magical man he was. My heart still aches at the thought of his passing; it still brings me to tears and it's been just over two years. That loss, losing David, it's never going to stop hurting completely, me thinks.

My sexual fantasy. He actually existed. Would have been honored to have been his wife! I know he was so much more than that. I don't mean to objectify him as much as I do. I know he had a heart, emotions and a large intellect. Not some beautiful piece of meat.

This sure was a big surprise, our family always watched Don Lane and when he put the phone down and did his adorable genuinely shocked intro I almost peed myself when he said David Bowie, I had tickets to see him at the Sydney concert. What a pair of absolute gentlemen, heartwarming to watch this interview again.

How utterly charming. I've always thought of David as one of "Mother Nature's" aristocrats; he may not have been born into nobility, but boy! he could sure show the ones who were how it's done.

I remember watching this live - the Don Lane Show was one of those shows that became iconic in my life. I would try so hard to stay awake to watch it after long days of school or work after I left school because it was broadcast live after 9:30pm. David Bowie just turning up unannounced was icing on the cake of this final show that had been a staple of many lives for many years.

They're not, really. They were both blue. His left eye was permanently damaged, when his friend, George Underwood, punched him in the eye over a girl when they were 12 or 13. David had 2 surgeries where they had to basically remove his eye to clean blood from behind it. His pupil was permanently dilated because the muscles were paralyzed. It gave the impression of him having one blue eye and one brown eye. George was forever sorry for it, but, Bowie said he had actually done him a favor. The look added to his otherworldliness during the Ziggy Stardust days.

Ziggy Stardust And Spiders From Mars Dimond Dogs with Red Hair and Glass Spiders. If you had to go out in a blaze of glory on your last talk show just have The Thin White Duke show up as your surprise guest. It was so cool how the audience when nuts when Bowie walked out on to that stage it was almost reminiscent and equal to the excitement and awe of when we all saw The Beatles for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. Don Lane's last show Wow, it doesn't get any better that that !!!! David Bowie we miss you - RIP.

Don Lane had that effect on visiting artists. There is a clip of Sammy Davis Jr being driven into the studio in a Police car because he just wanted to drop in and see Don. The funny thing was they damaged the car getting into the studio when they failed to negotiate a tight turn into the the actual stage area and bashed the door of the car in.....such a shame we have no shows of our own like this any more, but then again, there is nobody on TV talented enough to carry a show like this either.

Ah, well. Sinatra and team turned down David's lyrics for what became "My Way". But hey, it was for the best. There'd be no "Life On Mars" if that hadn't happened! Thanks, Frankie! The story is they at least met each other in LA when they were both recording in the same studios when David was working on _Station To Station._
