One of the reason's Hunky Dory is such an interesting album is that it was the last album Bowie did before becoming a mega star. When Ziggy Stardust resonated with people, he became a god-like figure. Nobody looked at Bowie like a normal guy ever again. Every Bowie album Ziggy Stardust and onwards were coming from more than a man. That obviously has its appealing factors as we all know. But Hunky Dory features an intimacy and a vulnerableness we wouldn't see from Bowie in a similar way ever again. It was an album from a guy who was down on his luck; Bowie's like us at this point of his life. This is the final album from David Jones. I find the historical context interesting. It's songs from a regular guy on the brink of something great: he has no idea that his life will never be the same again: he has no idea that a guy like him is going to change the world.

Unbelievably well put. The words he spoke were of a man who was well aware that he was emerging into a beautiful phase in his life and that he had something magical to share. I firmly believe that history will record this and Low as the most quintessentially Bowie albums. I could explain my rationale but with your eloquent words previously, I don’t feel it’s necessary to.

I didn't know very many songs from David, why was he so cool? He was a star sure, but nothing big in my eyes. This has all changed for me now. I want to slap myself for thinking such things because this man is taking an affect on my life so much despite him already having passed. No matter where David Bowie might be, his music has changed my life for good. I wish I could've known his beauty sooner, but I will spend my life remembering this amazing man.

Bowie just couldn't stop himself from elevating the standard pop song format to a higher art form.

Does HUNKY DORY actually get the kudos it deserves,,it certainly does with Bowie fans, the song writing ,the way the words are flowing one into another are just a precursor of what was to follow over the years a masterclass of songwriting and stunning songs on brilliant albums,,so personally i LOVE Hunky Dory and still play the ever worn vinyl.

Overall, he is fascinated with grand ideas and beliefs, while acknowledging they are also terrible. He is afraid that all that is good is also bad, and we will be the destruction of ourselves. The song is about how he sinks further into the mass of complicated/conflicting thoughts the more he fights with them. He just doesn't have the strength to struggle with the moral ambiguities.

The first song that came to mind when I heard. RIP to the most iconic artist I could ever think of. His music will continue to transcend anything else. The master of reinvention and one of the most prolific artists I can name who kept doing it right every time

I've loved this song since the early 70s. When he played in my hometown Malmö in Sweden July 25 1997 this was the opening song, acoustic, I was standing right up front, what a moment, loved it, and still love this song, amazing!

I consider this one of his best songs...top 5 even. It has a healthy Beatles PLUS Lou Reed influence but it's uniquely Bowie. Beautiful, strange & with some very big ideas swirling around behind the lyrics.

Great memories of this song and album. His singer songwriter phase after this he went in a different direction with Ziggy . Still my favourite Bowie album a work of genius , great work from a young Rick Wakeman on piano whose touch is all over the album.
