I've been trying to think what made Bowie such an outstanding musician-not performer, necessarily, but purely as a musician. Once you take away his huge personal charisma, his style, his fashion sense, it's hard to say. He's certainly not a virtuoso-not in the traditional sense, anyway. But I think he has a lot of self-knowledge and an incredible instinct for musical taste. He knows exactly what things he can & can't do, and he's very adept at using his full vocal and emotional range. There are supposedly gifted singers with 3 and 4 octave ranges and perfect pitch who don't use them half this effectively. Every performance, live and otherwise, is emotionally sculpted with real intelligence. The end result feels like sorcery. It's very difficult to explain just what's so good about this, but it really is a fine performance.
@thebillryan3 жыл бұрын
I loved what you said. As a virtuoso, his alto and bass ranged at a five, sopranos are a seven. There is no other vocal register. Sometimes its the peculiarity and something else of the voice that reaches the ranges of emotion that no metrics can quantify. Bowie is that. And Dylan and Cohen and and and you.
@bertvervoort79762 жыл бұрын
@@thebillryan In some senses his live performances did not match his albums musically, because when you listen to his albums and the complexity of the arrangements and use of stereo was incredible - you could not replicate the complexity live. That being said, his energy and passion was incredible and more than made up for it.
@barrysmith89202 жыл бұрын

David Bowie arrived 1/8/1947 - BlackStar arrived 1/10/2016 - So the Monday after reading about the death of David Bowie I read Sammy Hagar (The Red Rocker) as he spoke about how David had influenced him so much and he really wished that he had met him. …So I replied to Sammy that “You did Sammy, you have met him, as once you hear David Bowie and he enters your soul, you know him and you will never be the same again, ever! - - - - I then mentioned how strange it is that when there is someone you've never met before passes, you can still feel such a loss. ….David stayed up with me many a lonely night over the last 45 years - making my bad days better - my nights brighter, all while making me a better musician. ...What a talent. - What a career. - What a loss. - What a soul and thank you for sharing it and thanks for touching mine. -J.D.Gragg ps; We all know there is a footprint on the Moon - now we know there is one on Mars, David Bowie's.

As I just replied to Suzie, I've just been back now to have read you and I am so arm in arm with all of "us". ...I used quotations as WE were a special group of people just to have understood David the way WE did. ...I think about him daily it seems. ....I too tear up about him. ...I guess it will be a long long time before I am over him. ..I'm not bi or gay, but I never looked at David that way as it was his music that just took me away and placed me in the moment. ...ps: I sure appreciate all of you. ....It is the ALL of you that makes me feel so NOT all alone. Thank you for your words - you have lifted some of the heavy-heart. -J.D.
