I met him once on a London street, I said "Hello David" .. he replied "Hello" .. we shook hands and he walked off on his merry way. There was definitely an aura about the man, that meeting came flooding back the day he died. Even just shaking his hand there was some sort of electricity emanating from him !

It's been almost four years since we lost David Bowie. I'll never forget where I was when I read the news. It was late at night - like 2 in the morning. I couldn't sleep even though I had to work the next day. Earlier that day I had finally gotten around to listening to the whole of Blackstar for the first time. I loved it, but was slightly confused about it. There was something that I just couldn't put my finger on. The melody of this song rang through my head for a few seconds, after which I got a really bad feeling. Like the air had been sucked out of the room or something. So I opened a window and lit a cigarette; pulled out my phone to take my mind off of this feeling. Then I read the headline. The cigarette fell out of my mouth and the tears came. I was never the biggest Bowie fan. I adored the music, yet never to the point that I could label myself a fanatic. But I knew how powerful of a person he was and still I believed in him, despite never meeting him and never truly knowing him. So reading that headline "David Bowie Has Passed Away, Age 69" was like reading a headline that said "God is dead". I've never really believed in God, but I believed in David Bowie.

I know. Through the years, my relationship with Bowie's music had evolved from adoration to worshipping to questioning to exploring to revisiting to loving again... Then, in 2010s, I stopped closely following him, being immersed into different kinds of music and then stopping listening to music altogether because of certain sad personal issues. And then the news struck - incidentally, when I was on a business trip to Britain; it was a nice morning in Reading. And at that moment it all came back, overwhelmed me, made me numb. I wasn't a bit of a fan at the moment, but that feeling of a huge loss was so deep, and it never completely left me since then.

Even as he struggeled with illnesses, he perfomed like *GOD* You can see that he was very sick, ( water retention in his face, his hands, his body) and he probably did the best performance of 'life on mars' despite that he was so sick. I feel so sad, while I'm watching this and seeing him so different. But.....I still love this guy. I remember sitting on my bedroom floor, a 13 year old boy, listening to Hunky Dory after buying it a the record store at the end of our street. The first time I heard Life on Mars it touched me and I was amazed at the song - the lyrics, the piano, how it started softly and built in intensity as it went on... Here I am 47 years later, a 60 year old man - that still gets the same feeling when I hear this song. RIP David Bowie - the world is better because of your creations. Thank you.

About 10 years ago a dear friend of mine who was British told me that I underrated David Bowie and I began to realize he was right. I asked him which was his favorite Bowie song and at first he said "Drive-In Saturday" and then he quickly said, "No, 'Life On Mars''". My friend struggled with cancer for about 10 years, and when Bowie died he posted on Facebook "All the good people are going and only the assholes will be left." My friend died a few months later.

It was June 14, 1974 when David Bowie launched his Diamond Dog's tour at the old (now gone) Montreal Forum. I had just turned 16 the week before and it was the second concert I had attended. To a child who had never quite managed to fit it, his art answered all the questions I had of my very small world and I was hooked. That 16 year old girl is still part of me, and the complete thrill of seeing, and hearing this wonderful artist still lives in my heart. Life on Mars was where my journey as a fan started, a journey that will never end. Thank you for the music David.

I was there. It was Fashion Rocks @ Radio City Music Hall. I was there to see Duran Duran because I'm a huge Duranie, but secretly I was more excited to see David perform. I had never seen him live before and I actually didn't know much of his pre 80s songs. I had no idea this was an old song. The whole audience was transfixed. I could barely blink...I felt like I was entranced in a magical spell. It was AMAZING!!! I went out the next day to buy his Platinum Collection. I was a super fan for life after that. I am so sad that was the only time I got to see him live but I am thankful for that one chance! (And now this is my favorite Bowie song)

He played this both times I saw him. This is my favourite Bowie tune, by far. To the 561 sad people who gave this thumbs down, I feel so sorry for you. I loved to see Bowie rock, but this is pure brilliance; I can't help but feel there is some level of disrespect giving thumbs down on this brilliant man's final performance. Damn! Was there ever an artist that affected so many lives. The velvety smooth voice, the multiple personas, the songwriter, the sense of humor, the charm, the grace, that dilated eye! I miss him like a lost brother. His influence will endure forever. The most amazing legacy ever left by an entertainer. I was 13 years old when I began my journey with Bowie, and I hope that I will arrive at my destination with my passing, to be embraced by The Star Man like I was his lost brother.

That's sweet. And similar to my own story. I was ten or so (I'm 46 now), on car holiday in Germany, and we stopped at a gas station. Mom and Dad said my sister and I could chose one audio cassette each. I asked Mom who David Bowie was. She was a Christian and the then rather shocking Bowie was probably not her cup of tea, but she said "they say he has a beautiful voice." So, my first time listening to Aladdin Sane in its entirety was in the car in Germany. Bowie's been with me ever since.

Kent Jenson Great story but I am curious, what did your family think of David Bowies voice & that tape back then? (I liked Bowie a lot unless a song was "obvious" not my cup of tea) but he was so good I learned to ignore many of the lyrics while also ignoring watching him in any live performance. When "that era" was tamed down and then basically over- I began to watch and appreciate him even more.

I think my parents were oblivious to the lyrics, as was I, as my English was extremely limited at that time. I think they just picked up that this was sophisticated rock noise. :) I like all eras of Bowie, personally, including the weird looking early years. Genius artists get extra freedoms.

When I saw this last year for the first time it made me sad to see him moving slower. However, watching it today made me happy and proud of him. He proved there is still no one like him. He pushed through even though physically he wasn't in the best health at the time. He is so courageous,humble and passionate. Following this performance he fully fully dedicated his life to what he said was most important over music, his family. I'm happy for him he got to do this one lost time but I believe David continued to be a happy, content man. He achieved what he wanted to do professionally and personally. I look at this now from a different lens based on interviews where he spoke about his real passions etc. Well done Starman ☺️🔥

I can hardly watch this performance, it is one of the most painful and sad things I have ever seen in my life. You can easily see he is ill. Standing up there for all of us who love him. I saw David three times in concert. I will never forget his concert at the Hollywood Bowl. He was singing Space Oddity. He was sitting in a cherry picker machine and was being lifted up into the air. Directly over his head above the arch of the Bowl was a huge moon in the sky. The real moon. A sort of backdrop. When i heard David had died, I lost heart. It was like when Robin Williams died. Strange how we can feel so much for people we never met.

This song is not only melancholy beautiful, it is also analytically complex (I have studied analysis at a classical music conservatory). This version in particular, every time I listen to it, my hairs stand on end, and seeing Bowie like that breaks my heart. I was born in 2004 and unfortunately it was not until 2018 that I began to fully immerse myself in his music. I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived in a time where I have lived with Bowie and there are these means to remember him. Rest in peace Ziggy.
