Bowie's rousing energy in this electrifying version, excellent, made more precious by a fantastic performance of the extraordinary Adrian Belew. From the album "Station to Station", released in 1976.

Fantastic version! Bowie has performed this song almost on every tour: 1976, 1978, 1983, 1990, 1997, 1999 and 2002 and it is interesting to compare the different versions. Every of his bands added a different "colour" to it, and it always sounded great!

I didn't know that Adrian toured with Bowie after he left for the Talking Heads. Wow. This is a great version of the song, but as much as I love Adrian, I like the 1978 version because more of the band was featured; plenty of Adrian's solos, but more of a band performance than merely a showcase for Adrian.

You just don't see musicians and shows like this anymore. The highest quality musicians, incredible musicianship and integrity. Maybe they're out there, maybe I'm out of touch. Nothing these days seems to be nearly as ambitious and interesting. Guitar work takes a background these days as well. Look at Adrian, a master of his instrument.

I remember going to the Sound + Vision tour at Foxboro, MA. I was familiar with most of the songs Bowie had in his set but "Stay" wasn't one of them as I really wasn't into Station To Station at the time. I thought most of the songs were too long and the album was uneven. Since then, it's arguably my favorite Bowie album, and having seen Belew on tour with him made it even more special.

I really like this video of "Stay", because it really shows how amazing Adrian Belew's guitar playing is. Not only that, I think it really illustrates what one could call his "methods" for mixing the pure sonic with tonality and the actual notes and structure of the song. What can't be shown is how he decides what is going to go where and when...

Fabulous song David was so brilliant and surrounded himself with brilliant musicians his wife his friends why must we die there are many species of trees that live longer than humans doesn’t seem right somehow. There will never be another bowie absolute brilliant man!! 1990 is when he met Iman. I read where the night he officially met her all he talked about was what he was going to name their children he fell head over heels immediately it was his birthday his hairdresser was also Iman’s. The hairdresser got them together. Iman said the birthday took place at a restaurant and there were only four people including her

How the hell does Belew's guitar stay in tune?
@lextual4 жыл бұрын
The Fender Stratocaster guitar is pretty reliable itself with regards to tuning given the stock nature of its' basic parts. They are really hard to break, and if you after a lot of work do manage to do so, they are modular in nature, you can add/replace as necessary. Adrian Belew being a top level musician with the commensurate salary, can get his guitars custom made to withstand the extra pressures he puts on a guitar...

From listening to live recordings and rehearsals for about 4 tours, I would wager Bowie missed his cue. He was prone to forgetting lyrics and placing them in the wrong order, probably nailing things down right before the tour got rolling...

Adrian Belew is an amazingly talented guitarist. He’s also royally fucking up this song. There’s more to being a great guitarist than shredding, chief among them knowing how to FIT with the musicians around you. He could do that with Talking Heads just fine, but he’s absolutely not doing it here.

It's called musical masturbation. Belew did it as well as anyone. Good example of a talented guitarist making a good song boring, because his ego is writing checks that the song can't cash. Check out his 1977 or '78 live performance of the same song. He was fine, absolutely perfect.

@VampireBowie I fully agree with the overview on the album. An anguished creation, cryptic, steeped in loneliness and alienation from "this world" and by oneself, but also an intense invocation. STS was a poetic self-portrait, of one contradictory solipsism, fascinating for that tension admirably described in the inner dialogue of "Word on a Wing" (with hidden references on Sefirotic Tree...). Great Bowie. Thanks for your always interesting comment, my dear friend.
@tombraider110013 жыл бұрын
is this one of the out-takes that didnt appear on the sound+vision tour video, from tokyo??? btw, never thought of the STS album in the way you guys have described it, always thought it was a product of the great man's cocaine-induced paranoia, certainly the title track!!! anyway, great video
