I don’t wish to be morbid, but I am nearing the end of my life due to cancer. This song has given me great comfort. It’s the only music I want played at the farewell gathering when I’m gone. Thank you, Mr. Byrne and Mr. Eno.

This reminds me of when I was a teenager and saw the Talking Heads perform at the Cape Cod Coliseum - basically a stage at the end of a hockey rink without the ice. I was barely 10 yards from the stage in the throng. David Byrne came out alone with just a boombox and a guitar, and played "Psycho Killer". After every song one more band member would come out with another instrument, until there were 15 or 20 on stage and they played "Once in a Lifetime". To say it was an epic, almost spiritual experience, is not an exaggeration, nor is another comment for this video that described Byrne as a national treasure. He seems to have the mind of a physicist, the courage of a soldier, and the heart of a child. He is all of these and more.

In a sense - maybe two, but I mean in all. When he dies, like the greatest composers we've ever had, he will simply become music, but that's not what I want. I want my grandchildren who are as of yet unborn to be able to collaborate in real time with a living David Byrne. Some people should simply not perish and David Byrne is one of those.

Kenneth Taylor I discovered David Byrne and Talking Heads in the Eighties while watching Down and Out in Beverly Hills. Once in a Lifetime was on the soundtrack. So different. So eccentric. But still simple and accessible. He's helped shape the way I look at music.
@Hilde_von_Derp4 жыл бұрын
I dunno how to put it, but, David Byrne seems to have a ‘humbleness’ before the music. He saunters in with the choir and waits for his cue, he never seems to crave the focus or the attention, just to make beautiful sound, and at the end when he turns to the choir to applaud, look at the grin on David and Mauro’s faces. They just love doing this.

Saw the wanderin' eye, inside my heart Shouts and battle cries, from every part I can see those tears, every one is true When the door appears, I'll go right through, oh I stand in liquid light, like everyone I built my life with rhymes, to carry on And it gives me hope, to see you there The things I used to know, that one fine One fine day In a small dark room- where I will wait Face to face I find- I contemplate Even though a man- is made of clay Everything can change- that one fine- Then before my eyes, is standing still I beheld it there, a city on a hill I complete my tasks, one by one I remove my masks, when I am done Then a piece of mind, fell over me In these troubled times, I still can see We can use the stars, to guide the way It is not that far, the one fine
