I grew up in a small town in NE AL. I was around 10 when this version came out on U.S. television. I'd always been fascinated with Great Britain & all things Gothic, having watched the 1960's soap opera "Dark Shadows" as a very young girl. "David Copperfield" just solidified my obsession. Thank you so much for uploading this version!!!

I remember this version when PBS ran it. I'd read the abridged version of the book that school year. As I watch it again now it renders all those youthful feelings. I loved that the actor who played David resembled Donovan a bit! May I take a stab at the philosophy of Dickens: that good eventually overcomes evil. That simple.

As a U.S. citizen with immigrant parents of First Generation Irish/English descent, I have to say... the only films that have 'always' captured our hearts/attention have been the English films (from Sunday evening, Family Classics and Benny Hill, ect.) ! To be honest, I just can't put it into words...we just gravitated to Sunday Family Classics (mostly English films) and Irish/English shows on Chicago's Channel PBS Channel 11. Of note, we seldom watched television when we were younger as we were far too busy with homework, sports, Irish Dancing, Learning an instrument. Cheers!

I watched it last night on a budget DVD - I though it was good and very sad by the end.. great cast, well done flashbacks and camera work despite an obvious low budget. I haven't read the book but I would think that it did a serviceable job of capturing the story. You can hand it to Dickens to stick up for the good, earnest people of the Earth

The demeanour and expression of this 'David' matches Steerforth's character far better than someone who was meant to be 'fresh as a daisy' and of 'amiable character' etc

There exists so very much philosophy, religion, and literature that, to truly understand and appreciate should be read in it's original script. England does not have a franchise on beautiful thought. I'm kinda screwed though, I'm English.

Now this is well cast. But for sheer terror, no one can beat Basil Rathbone as Mr. Murdstone. The sequence where he beats David (Freddy Bartholomew) still makes me have nightmares today. By the way, you thumbnail you are using for this movie is a still from the 1935 movie, which prominently shows Basil Rathbone and Freddy Bartholomew, not anyone from the 1969 which is what you are showing.

The text is ascribed both to William Whittingham (hymnary.org/hymn/HTC/591b) and Francis Rous (hymnary.org/hymn/TPH2018/23A), so I am not exactly sure who to believe about the lyrics, but the tune is singularly ascribed to James Leith Macbeth Bain and known as "Brother James Air" (hymnary.org/tune/brother_james_air). Apparently, the only alteration in the film, and presumably by Sir Arnold, was the change of the second to last note from the octave or eighth to the seventh or leading tone; a slight, but effective change.
@tedthesailor172 Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the location amongst the encrusted wooden breakwaters, where David is seen to wander in thought towards the end, was co-opted as a backdrop for the opening credits in their 1970's TV series....

glassheartnerd I am afraid I have to admit that I the quality of the picture is bad, the actors as good as they are are no match for the cast of the 1935 version, from David Bartholomew, Edna May Oliver, Elsa Lanchester, Basil Rathbone, W.C.Fields, Maureen O'Sullivan, Lionel Barrymore, not forgetting the superb Roland Young in the role of the slimy Uriah Heep, and the beautiful Elizabeth Allen. I would not watch this version again, but the 1935 version I have it on tape.

This is a dreadful movie. A great book with some great actors doing bad performances. Ralph Richardson was the best thing about it but it's hard to mess up that character. I think the producers and screenwriter just read my brother's high school term paper on David Copperfield which was solely based on Cliffs Notes. Like the screenwriter for this abomination, he didn't read the book either. If you liked this, please watch the 1935 version to understand what a good movie made from this book looks like.
