So smooth and economical with no wasted energy. His timing is impeccable and I love the ghost notes

Yes, it is insane how smoothly he plays. Complicated stuff, he laughs and goes straight through it all.

these videos isolating David and the drum parts are invaluable. you can see the machine like timing and nuances of his snare ghost and kick notes and pedal work without all the other instrumental wash out front. THANKS!

I loved the "Let's see if they can keep up" grin as he kept pushing the tempo.

chrisose I noticed on this and What Is Hip there’s a clear n distinct tempo increase- or at least the ‘illusion’(?) of such- in both tunes during the drive part - the instrumental interludes. However I’m thinking it’s far more slight than we’re perceiving it. I believe in big bands like this - and especially in parts where it can particularly lag like musical interludes - the drummer must purposely get on top of if not slightly ahead to drive this beast along. Like herding cattle cause it’s a lotta cats up there. I’m fascinated by this because I been watching em fo all fitty or so years they’ve been around. When he plays as he does from the house it sounds uber tight, meticulously precise and seamless. It gives the band bright, lively sound. Jerome Brailey does this a lot on much of his live work w/PFunk particularly.

@@nukeystik6730 I kicked a 17 pc band for a coupla years, and you described that perfectly! Did you play?
@nukeystik3 жыл бұрын
@@michaeljenkins6448 yeah man. I played in an alternately 16-20 piece Jazz Big Band for about 6-7yrs. I read but really REALLY got my reading together w/this. I learned the hard way bout tempos. 1- KEEP PLAYING no matter what. Get lost? Just hold the groove. 2 - get on top and stay there. If you THINK you’re lagging they are

Who is playing the hi-hat part? Not Garibaldi. He's playing a relatively straight beat on right side hi-hat and occasional accents on left hi-hat, yet there's a much more complicated hi-hat part audible that his right hand doesn't match. What's going on? Doesn't look like he's doing it.
@milesdamaso6 жыл бұрын
ChristopherBix You are correct, the hi hat part isn’t super complicated. What you’re hearing is his ghost strokes on the snare. They’re blending perfectly with his hi hats:)
