First of all, thank you for the review. I emjoyed it. For me, this album is top notch! However, a few things are needed to really connect with this album: 1. Headphones. A must to be able to hear the engineering nuances, of which there are many. 2. Lots of time with zero distractions. Play it start to finish. Listen actively, not passively. 3. Knowledge that this is a conceptually crafted album. The songs may not connect as breakless, but they definitely connect. This is developed with a theme that highly connects the entire album. If someone speaks of this song or that song and never talks about the album in its entirety, I have to wonder what they are missing. 4. You must have musical empathy. Some have it. Some don't. This is a highly personal album. A 78 yrar old man is exploring life, death and meaning through lyrics and music. If you dont FEEL that, then there's not much I can do for you. You know musical empathy when you see someone tear up, or become so involved that the world around them disappears. In psychology we call it entering the flow. Historically (evolutionary) I feel it is has been a helpful trait within humans to help them feel connected as a group; think of tribal celebrations with various primal instruments and rhythms. People who celebrate together stay together. 5. An open mind. If you already type casted Gilmour (stealing his right to develop as an artist through exploration and development), then you have already decided. So move on with your life please. Stop trashing this amazing human and musician. You are not worthy.

Wow this is a fantastic response. I haven't heard it thru headphones, but I crank it thru my vintage stereo system with 5 speakers, though I don't have the surround version of the album. I forget that people don't listen to complete albums or are passive. I'm not. I play albums thru and really take them in...and over time. I've heard this album probably close to 8 times in a week. I haven't analyzed the lyrics. I rarely do. I'm more musical, more melodic. I love your "entering the flow". What a great line and I totally relate. My family knows when music really affects me. I call it the Chill Factor. The ultimate is actually crying / tears. and yes it happens on occasion. By the way just heard album came in at #1 in the UK again. Very impressive. Wonderful album. Thanks so much.

Great review of a great album! It’s my favorite solo LP by David Gilmour. I’ve listened to it a lot since its release, and “Between Two Points” always haunts me after each listen. I know you’re not much of a lyrics person, but I think you would be short changing yourself if you didn’t give the lyrics on this album the attention they deserve. They really take the music listening experience to the next level - as all really good lyrics do. Few guitarists play solos as tasty as Gilmour. He practically sweeps me off my feet.

Somewhere in the comments here someone asked if Robert Wyatt played on the album, and I mentioned that I was a bigger Wyatt fan than Gilmour, for my sins. Curiously I have just discovered a Gilmour version of Comfortably Numb on KZbin with Wyatt doing the vocals from circa 2007 that you might consider checking out, and if you are unaware of Wyatt's version of Elvis Costello's Shipbuilding (about the Falklands War) then you are missing out on one of the great anti-war songs of all, IMO. Yea - me too. I do find this album the most Floyd like of his solo albums.
@douglasweston1263 ай бұрын
Hi Alan - OK, to start with I am a massive Floyd fan, have ALL their stuff and most of David's solo albums. I've streamed this album a couple of times, and am yet to really make my mind up. Don't all these artists say when they release a new album - "Its the best I've ever done" !! lolol. Its certainly got that Gilmour / Floyd guitar all over it that's for sure. BUT - after such a long time since his last album you would think he could have put more than 30+ minutes of new music on an album - right ?? Am not asking for 60 or 70 minutes, but really - two of the tracks, are very short, fair enough - not a problem as such, and the title track is mostly from 2007 !! The bonus track - well the jam's got a nice feel to it, but it really doesnt take off - it just drifts along and could quite easily be a taped loop. SO - there really isnt exactly a lot of NEW music here - I know he likes it a lot, but they all say that. I'll listen to it some more and have a think. "On An Island" my favourite Gilmour solo album. Cya Alan - Doug PS Jon Anderson - streamed his new one a couple of times - again not sure. The lyrics are a bit tweee - but its got YES all over it. At least its got about 60 minutes of NEW music, that's great. Again I'll stream it a few more times. Big YES fan also Lololol Cya
@TheAlanRosenbergShow3 ай бұрын
The new Gilmour is 61 minutes - take away the 14 minute jam and still have 47 minutes. Yea Yes I Have Ghosts was a previously released single from a few years ago, but wasn't on an album and few had it, so I've no problem with it on the album as a bonus track. The the title track was built from the jam, but is totally different in that its a song. It's actually fascinating to hear both - the song is new, the jam is old but far from the same thing Doug. I'll take the 46 minutes of "new" songs. They're all top quality in my view. And yea, most Floyd like solo album from Gilmour.

I just checked and the super deluxe GHS box is like $80 bucks on Amazon. I think for that price it's worth it. With the Stones, their boxsets, to me, are more sizzle than steak.
