I am really moved by this album, for me the best Gilmour creation since the DB. Musically is great, with awesome and emotional solos (I know this is David's signature, but the solo's performances are amongst the best even for him) and a fantastic and interesting blend of music styles. I perceive in some songs 70's Floyd's atmospheres, sounds and textures (Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Animals). Great production, beautifully performed as well (Polly's lyrics are the only thing I still do not appreciate that much). Romany intervention was a great addition and contribution. I feel absolutely thankful that David is still alive and composing amazing music.

Listened to this this morning. Nothing to bring me back for a second listen. A bit too dull for me. Some good guitar work, but voice sounds very tired as do the lyrics. Same old time/age/losing/loss themes done much better a long time ago. But, I guess this could be more relatable now that he is in his late 70's looking back, then when he/they were 30 somethings. I confess to not enjoying the post Waters Floyd very much and this album, to me, is another watery (no pun intended) ingredient added to a post Waters Floyd/Solo album stew with all the juicy meat and veg, to get your brain and body energised, in someone elses kitchen.

Yes with some trepidation I downloaded the 24/96 version. His past solo efforts have come to nothing. But your review is on the mark. Its on track for more listens. The only thing disappointing is the low DR6 of 7 tracks. I recognise this is the standard of a lot of recent recordings but really Gilmour is in a position to release the highest quality with really a Dynamic Range of 10 or more. The original Pink Floyd Albums start at DR10 up to 14. Gilmour is a quality musician but allows the current studio/record company boffins to reduce his work.

Simply a vehicle for Romany Gilmour's career to develop. Polly Gilmour's lyrics come straight from Mills & Boons greatest hits and Dave Gilmour's guitar work is safe and predictable. Not a bad album but certainly not deserving of all of the hype. 7/10.

I’m disappointed. I know he’s almost 80 but give some upbeat songs. $28 for 2 short instrumentals. His daughter singing lead vocals on a song , and his wife writing the lyrics. Hardly his best work since dark side. His first album is by far the best. Followed by his second then it keeps going down hill.

Agree….a bit too average. Lyrics a bit too done.

Yes, DG's first solo album is vastly underappreciated. IMO, it has aged quite well and the songwriting is as good as any solo effort he's put forth since. I just can't embrace Samson's lyrics.

I think it’s his best album since his 1at debut. Very good album! Love it!

Between two points and Scattered for me... the others haven't grabbed me yet. Hopefully in time, they will. A lovely sounding album though I must say. Nice recording.

On first listen I was pleased but not thrilled. But this album will stick in your mind and move your heart ... or it should. It's quite something, really. Some of Dave's finest guitar work, and Romany steals the show on "Between Two Points". Maybe as one who is on the wrong side of 50, the ruminations on mortality have more meaning than they would have had 10 or 20 years ago. Regardless, I'm very impressed. Perhaps it is his best work since ... Wish You Were Here.

I agree Davids voice is starting to crack, but his guitar playing has not suffered a bit. His daughter is incredible.

That was very confusing, especially the part about the snake being the biblical reference for death?

A very good and balanced review. I need to look at my expectations of Gilmour, really at the end of the day he didn’t write the album for me he did it for himself as it should be…I can’t expect him to duplicate the playing on his first solo album. After all he has given so much

I really loved 'On an Island'; it seemed most like Meddle-era PF. 'Rattle That Lock' I found to be a little clumsy and forced. But this new one I like a lot. Excellent; really enjoy your videos.

I’m pretty sure I’ve heard David call Wish You Were Here his favorite PF album though.

I think he may be separating best and favourite, the Syd element may swing it for him.
