In 1984, one year after Pink Floyd's last album 'The Final Cut', David Gilmour put out his second solo album 'About Face'. He had a band that consisted, among others, of Steve Winwood, Pino Palladino and Jeff Porcaro. I can spot Pino Palladino sporting his trademark fretless bass in this video, but the others I don't know.
The band plays 'short and sweet', which was featured on Gilmour's first solo album, that came out in 1978 and was called 'David Gilmour'. The song was cowritten by the enigmatic Roy Harper, who joins the band on stage in this 1984 performance of the song.

At the risk of sounding ungratefully greedy, I wish David Gilmour wrote more songs that sounded like this. That guitar riff is so sonically appealing that I am left wanting more. And yes, David produced so much amazing material such as this gem, mihalis, the blue, run like hell, take it back, one of these days, and the list goes deep. And with all that said, I wish there was even more. Lol

It is funny you say that because I have always felt that on this one Gilmour was over indulging in this peculiar tone that made him world renown. It also has a tinged of the 80's sound (even if it was recorded in 78) in it. This said, I have always thought of that first album as his best. There is a hidden gem on that first solo which, for some obscure reason, he has never played live and the song is Raise my Rent. I personally prefer the lead on that one than on Comfortably Numb.

To all who don't know: Columbian Emergency Benefit Concert - '84± had a Gilmour set, Pete T, Crissie & Robbie ('LTC' era Gtrist), Annie Lennox (& a killer (believe it or not, re The Cause) KC & The Sunshine Band song - 'Give It Up' duet w/Crissie Hynde, Pete jamming away on acoustic, Simon Philips Drumming throughout the night. It's a great show! Watch it & it's Pre A.R.M.S., Pre L.AID, pre everything except Mudstock, Watkins Glen, Altamont. It basically shames My home country on that level & allowed Me to turn a blind eye to all the rape 'n pillaging Touring of the USA. When Buddy Guy, Jimmy Page, Beck{✓}, Jorma K, Gilmour, Neil, Lanois & 1 more are all gone - Rock & Roll is over.

This amazing rendition is just a highlight of a totally amazing concert. I remember watching this on TV (I think it aired on MTV back in '84) and being blown away by it all. All the featured artists/band members really set this apart from your ordinary run of the mill concert. Just watch their expressions and the joy they had and shared with everyone. A great moment in time gone by, slowing fading into obscurity, but leaving an indelible mark on all of us predestined to witness it.

If you look close, you'll see what was known as the Schaeffer/Vega diversity system on Davids amp head. It's basically a gray metal box with some switches and what looks like an oscilloscope on top. That box is what enabled Gilmour to achieve a bigger fuller guitar tone without resorting to pedals. It's an amazing piece of engineering designed and built by Ken Schaeffer. (Also AC/DCs Angus Young is another well known user of the Schaeffer/Vega diversity system)
