the lyric "i never knew" in this context is so devastatingly sincere... and how she cries it over and over again, almost wailing, is just heartbreaking.

This song has me crying now that I've read the lyrics. My best friend Carlos committed suicide 2 years ago. He was so beautiful and always so happy, he was the closest friend I ever had. His suicide was a shock and it still is, I don't understand it. I really love this song, thank you Grimes for making this. You sung what i couldn't find the words for.

As time goes by, this song more and more makes me think of a female friend of mine that died, about 2 months ago. She was a nice person, dying in her late 20's. i miss her and hanging out with her at work and outside work. The lyrics are meaningful.

These are the right lyrics btw [Verse 1] Thinking up stories in my mind to relax, every single night There are no responsibilities there, everything's alright [Pre-Chorus] Every time I'm down, I dream, I dream of you It's not worth it, though, forgetting everything I know I need my old friend sitting next to me Time is everything, I'm thinking why do you have to be? [Chorus] Where does my heart go when you die How did that moment pass me by, oh How can you look so good and feel the way you do I never knew Oh, I never knew, oh [Verse 2] Got me dressin' in my Sunday-best; golden spires of light Hours pass like they are minutes or less, everything is alright [Pre-Chorus] Every time I'm down, I dream, I dream of you It's not worth it, though, forgetting everything I know (Was it worth it, though, leaving everything you know?) I need my friend is sitting next to me You were everything, I'll help you, why do you have to be? [Chorus] Where does my heart go when you die How did that moment pass me by, oh How can you look so good and feel the way you do I never knew Oh, I never knew [Chorus] Where does my heart go when you die How did that moment pass me by, oh How can you look so good and feel the way you do I never knew Oh, I never knew I never knew

This song means so much to me… my cousin died when we were 16 in a car accident. I didn’t realize until recently how much her death affected me. We both were dealing with depression but I never knew until after she died. When I hear the line “i never knew” it hits me so hard. Also over the years I realize that she really has faded from my memory. It’s hard to picture her face and voice when I remember a couple weeks after her death I could see and hear her clearly… I know she is still with me but this song means so much.
