David Joseph - You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me) (12'' Version) (1983) HQ uptempo Funk/Soul

David Nathaniel Joseph profesionally known as David Joseph is a British keyboardist, singer, songwriter and producer, born July 1957. He is the brother to Ken Joseph - both members of the North London brit funk group Hi-Tension. He released one solo album in 1983 entitled The Joys Of Life , produced by Godwin Logie, a reggae veteran who had worked with Hi-Tension in their Island period. It's a likeable serving of soulful synth pop, such as on the title track "The Joys Of Life", with its sunkissed acoustic guitars and underwatery electronics. "No Time to Waste" is rippling bluesy funk with a hungry vocal that anticipates the rock soul of Terence Trent D'Arby. Also well worth a listen is the single "Be A Star", which starts off with an array of flickering noises. It finds an uptempo beat and settles into more conventional soul, but with an enjoyably experimental synth thread running through the middle.
Yet the track still guaranteed to knock people off their feet years later is "You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)". It's immediately recognisable with its twanging synth hooks and down-to- business beats. It's so justifiably pleased with itself that Joseph doesn't even start singing until around the minute mark, and with such a hot liquid falsetto that you can't take your ears off him. It was a big club hit on both sides of the Atlantic and made number 13 in the UK charts, though deserved better. It was memorably used by DJ Greg Wilson on British youth music show The Tube to demonstrate mixing for the first time on British television. He almost came a cropper after the cameraman bumped into his decks, but thankfully it all ended well.
Jospeh collaborated with Chris Paul for an updated cover of the 1975 Lonnie Liston Smith classic "Expansions". He released two more singles on the 4th & Broadway label (1987-1988) and is credited as well for backing vocals in 1982's "Mr. Solitaire" of Animal Nightlife and in 2011 track "Traditional" out of Cameron Pierre's "Radio Jumbo".
