In these excerpts of the first and only demonstration of its kind, David shows how he came up with one of his early masterpieces, Eddie Hamilton’s Studio. Even though the original painting measures 50” x 40”, here it is reduced to fit an 18” x 14” board. We see the finished painting onscreen and are able to appreciate the abstract impact of using darks against light to make a visually strong image. David explains what “finish” really means in a painting, which will surely surprise the viewer as it is opposite of common belief. Beauty he captures is demystified as he walks us through his thought process in coming up with the rogue composition that makes this image a career tour de force.
Because David is working from a finished image, he is able to explain how he thinks more thoroughly than if he was painting a new idea. Working slowly, the painting emerges surprisingly fast. This great lesson exemplifies the reason for the sage advice in this adage, “Act in haste, repent at leisure.”
