David Letterman and Conan O'Brien, Part 2: 2010-2012
September 13, 2018, marks Conan O'Brien's 25th year on late night television. Here's a two-part Dave/Conan compilation to commemorate the milestone.
Part 1 documents Dave's and Conan's interactions on each other's shows from 1994 to 1999, followed by Dave's reactions when Conan was awarded The Tonight Show in 2004 and then finally took over the show in 2009. Part 1 is here: • David Letterman and Co...
In the absence of further appearances, Part 2 is devoted mostly to Dave's gags and running commentary on the fiasco that was The Tonight Show in January 2010. The collection ends with Conan's last Late Show guest appearance in 2012.
Part 2
January 2010: The bird network cancels Jay Leno's nightly 10 PM show and suggests he host a half-hour at 11:35 PM before Conan's Tonight Show. Conan is not pleased. The ruckus gives Dave material for the next two weeks:
18. January 11, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 1: Dave's Plan
19. January 12, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 2: The Money
20. January 13, 2010. Dave on Conan vx. Jay, 3: Jeff Zucker
21. January 14, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 4: Doing the Right Thing
22. January 15, 2010. Recent TV Host Changes.
23. January 18, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 5: Dick Ebersol
24. January 19, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 6: Don't Blame Conan
25. January 20, 2010. Cold Open with Dave and Jude Brennan; CBS affiliate & Team Conan.
26. January 21, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 7: Joe Grossman's Conan jokes.
27. January 22, 2010. Trailer for "Late Shift 2."
28. September 2, 2010. Dave on Conan vs. Jay, 8: Recap.
29. June 23, 2011. Trailer for "Cars 2."
30. May 17, 2012. Conan guests on Late Show, 5.

Seeing Dave and Conan together now feels strangely bittersweet, knowing that both men are retired from late night TV, but are now doing what they like the way they want it to be done and most certainly stand tall among the greats. Bless you both, gentlemen.

After being as rich as can be, and seeing where television is going, dealing with all the execs couldn’t possibly outweigh creative expression. Now we don’t have to watch 10 minute interviews followed by ads, we get to see a Tom Snyder-ish interview with guests the hosts truly want to have. A crazy age for sure.

@user-yn7yo1co3k Dave is the only reason Conan found success. Conan literally has stated this. When Conan's show was on the edge of being axed, Dave went on his show as a guest for the entire second half of an episode. From then on, Conan got much bigger and became who he was on late night. In fact, on the night of Dave's final show, Conan begged his audience to switch channels and go watch Dave's final show. So as much as Dave was anti-Jay, he was very much pro-Conan.

Conan got $32 million payoff, but it was not a bonus or some extra money he got. He received his full salary payment for the remainder of his contract with NBC. He cared very much about his team that had moved to CA from NY and made sure everyone was going to work for him at TBS. Conan could have just kept most of the money, but he knew there is a very real thing called 'right and wrong' and following what's right is important. I'm sure you've heard of NDEs, but did you know according to peer reviewed medical journals that 20% of *veridical NDEs are DNDEs or distressed near death experience. It isn't always nice on the other side for people who do not care about right and wrong. A *veridical experience cannot be explained away by natural means because the person told of things that they couldn't possibly know even if they had been awake, often tell of things happening elsewhere, or people born blind telling of seeing and describing what happened or born deaf people hearing and repeating conversations going on while they were technically dead.

its good that Conan "can't stop" and that his staff is young and he thinks like a musician / artist. "They won't let us on TV? We're a band, lets go on tour! The interview with Conan speaks volumes. You can tell he was still quite emotionally affected by the whole mess. At 1:43:08 Dave says "What was your relationship before..." and Conan is visibly upset. He didn't want to talk about Jay too much and his body language, especially the flick with the right hand, says "Welp, guess we're diving in"

This is a perfect compilation - with all the as-it-happened clips from Jan. 2010 acting as appetizers - then Dave’s 2012 interview with Conan as the main course. Both Dave and Conan are hilarious with their repartee, and truly seem to enjoy piling on Jay Leno. I can’t tell you how many times I laughed during these two hours, but I know one of my favorite bits was Conan’s sudden and unexpected Edward G. Robinson impersonation during the the restaurant story. It didn’t seem planned and showed why I’ve become such a fan of his quick wit.

Dave was nothing like those fake, obsequious clowns you mentioned. All they did was mindlessly suck up to all their guests and play down to the lowest common denominator. Letterman was The New School; he went totally against grain of the established model. What made Dave truly special was that he just didn't really care, and it showed. If he genuinely liked the guest, you could tell, and they were funny together... and if he didn't like the guest, you could also tell, and that was even funnier.
