David Lynch, Laura Dern, and Justin Theroux discussing Inland Empire at the 44th New York Film Festival in 2006.
On the occasion of the release of her monograph Inland Empire (published by Fireflies Press), critic/editor Melissa Anderson joins us for a special screening of Lynch’s enigmatic and singularly immersive 10th feature (from a new digital restoration, courtesy of Janus Films) on May 11, to be followed by a book signing. Get tickets: www.filmlinc.o...
Written one scene at a time and shot piecemeal over a period of three years on a consumer-grade digital-video camera, Inland Empire is a work shaped by the conditions of its creation. The film, filled with disparate segments and parallel worlds, begins when actress Nikki Grace (Laura Dern), in her cavernous Hollywood mansion, receives a visit from a new neighbor (Grace Zabriskie) who foretells the film’s grave, free-falling identity crisis to follow. Inland Empire oozes, miasma-like, across continents-one minute we are in sunny California, the next in snowy Old World Poland-awash with the narrow range of colors and murky contrast of digital video. Some have read Lynch’s tenth feature as a companion piece to Mulholland Drive, but in truth it is a singular and immersive work that sustains and amplifies the Lynchian sensation of dread to proportions never before felt. An NYFF42 selection. New 4K restoration. A Janus Films Release.

This was the first time I interacted with David Lynch at the 11:04 mark I asked him what were the chances that he would ever come back to Twin Peaks to "tie up the loose ends". He said 0 %......He didnt lie. I should have never said tie up the loose ends. I knew it the second those words came out of my mouth. 🙂 Tho I think he saw the look of disappointment on my face. About 11 years later I was watching New Twin Peaks. Thank You David Lynch!

Seriously. "The Return" is one of the best things he has ever done.

The Return was amazing! I'm conflicted yet I'm glad Lynch didn't feel pressured to "tie up loose ends". Return is kind of special, it's own thing.

@@TheBoboSamurai he did tie up the loose ends. The return even explains what Eraserhead was all about it does everything, just adds new questions at the end

I recently got my Criterion Collection bluray of Inland Empire in the mail. Very excited & slightly nervous to watch it soon. Was very obsessed with this film when it came out, watching the original dvd full Director's cut several times and with seemingly unending extra footage.

"I don't know how the world works" but this movie seen just today tied up all my loose ends.... A beautiful masterpiece that became so intimate... Thank you, Mr Lynch....

Laura Dern is such an incredibly charming woman and an Angel. It's so weird to think that her Dad is Bruce Dern, who (although yes a great actor) played all these evil cold villains helped give birth to such a graceful and utterly polite woman. These are the gifts of life God gives us. We should treasure them.

Justin, for christ sake, hold the mic closer.. anyways, i'm about to approach the movie for, idk, like 99th time after that:] Edit: 12:15 i lived there for a year ;P Heavy post-industrial atmosphere, dark long and winding streets, empty for most of the night time.. beautiful in that sense. Though, people used to hate it for the same reasons. Sometimes called Holly-Łódź, because of all the film schools and art life around there.
