A posh accent and a thesaurus is pretty much all that separates “David Mitchell’s soapbox’ and a ‘Karl Pilkington rant’ 🤣🤣 love them both though ❤

He’s definitely not right British cuisine has come on an awful lot in the last 40 years. Before that, it wasn’t very good, but you have to remember we had rationing during the war which affected our eating habits and what we could get hold of. Restaurants and pubs, provide a very substantial menu. The biggest problem is people don’t know how to cook at home. I had to learn to cook very quickly when my wife left because I had a sevenyear old son which was an eating machine so are used step-by-step cookbooks I got from charity shops. I now consider myself to be quite a good cook. I had a French girlfriend and impressed her and her family. Who said an Englishman that can cook? My reply was an English man, that’s hungry. Today, a reasonably plain meal I’m cooking paprika, chicken, thighs, mixed herb, roast potatoes vegetables with an onion gravy. This doesn’t make me a chef but it means me and my son are not hungry and enjoy the meal. Even plain meals we enjoy bangers mash peas, onion, gravy. ( bangers are slang for sausages ) but this morning breakfast is going to be a good old-fashioned bacon butty and I might even throw an egg on the top

No matter where you visit, if you come to England, find a small bakery that isn't part of a franchise, and get a meat and potato pie, or a Cornish pasty (which is basically a meat and potato pie but with a crust you can hold it by). Also, you need to try the pre-made sandwiches you can buy from supermarkets like Tesco or ASDA, because apparently they're far better than the US ones (according to an ex of mine from Florida anyway).

Heston Blumenthal - yeah, that guy takes food beyond sanity. Basically treating food as Lego is a great tv idea, not a good food idea.
@AndrewHalliwell

Heston is the type of chef who attempts to deconstruct everything and put it back together again in insane ways. Like making something fish shaped out of potato,covering it in batter and frying it, then making the chips out of haddock.

The architypal ‘British food’ has got to be fish and chips. It used to be a cheap ‘working man’s’ meal but is getting a bit pricey these days! The best chip shops are often to be found on the coast - the fish is fresher. Probably the best is to be found in Whitby on the North-East coast. Whitby is a great place to visit. It’s got the ruined abbey, the ‘99 steps’, picturesque harbour, nice beach (North Sea is a bit cold though!), the jet jewellery shops, and Dracula and the goths…

Keep up the good work, I just know you're a comedy life line to so many, we really appreciate it.

One of Britain's most brilliant creations is the crisp sandwich. You guys might call it a chip sandwich in the US. Oh there's another one we do here a chip butty bread lashings of butter and chips, again French fries to you guys in the US, pure genius......

Question, in a country of free refills why do you pay more for a large drink? Does no-one see the absurdity of paying for a "large"?
@BoringReviews
@BoringReviews Жыл бұрын
Great question. First of all the free refills thing isn’t true in all establishments here. And it’s slowly reducing year by year. But fort he places that do offer free refills the reason being that for fast food very few people go inside to dine. It’s mostly drive thru or grab and go. So you want a larger size so you have more as you are traveling or taking it to work or home. Typically the large (twice the size) is only a few dimes more.

In terms of your soda size question: Not where I live, as far as I'm aware. You pretty much just grab cans or bottles (which obviously come in various sizes) out of the fridge, but *that* big? Nah. The McDonalds large size is about as big as you can get.

Posh food is ridiculous. When I was young our family would have days out at the seaside. One place we went a lot was Seasalter, just a few miles down the Kent coast from us. We stayed in a caravan for a week there one time. We used to go to a lovely pub called The Sportsman, especially if the weather turned, as it had a covered, conservatory type area around the building. It is now a "Gastro Pub". It is £80 per person to eat there, and they don't offer bar service to non- diners! Good luck to them, I'd rather spend ,say, £10 and have a decent pint and a ploughman's in a traditional pub.

Just make sure the plough man doesn't catch you nicking his grub, or he'll likely destroy your front lawn and turn it into a turnip patch.

In context, the legend is that in 1762 John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, "invented" the sandwich when he instructed his servant to give him some roast beef between two layers of bread so that he could have an easy handheld meals so he didn't have to stop gambling.
@stephenpodeschi6052

There were a lot of UK specific references in there and although you can understand the words its the context that's amusing ( not funny) in this observation. The sandwich was easy to recognize the rest well I doubt many young Brits would get....lol

In a lot of foods and drinks yes. It’s really annoying. Also, chips or crisps here drive me nuts. You can have a bag the size of a journal but the chips inside only are halfway filled. We hate that.

If you took all the ice out of an American soda, then you would have the same amount of soda that is in a UK large cup. The extra volume is just ice (or water when it melts).

Earl of Sandwich loved him some card games, he didn’t want to break off the game to eat so asked for hid meals to be served in two bread slices, so he could eat and play. He’s probably not the first to have that idea, but he defo popularised it, so that today “I’ll have a Sandwich” has lost all historical meaning and rooted itself in our subconscious as meaning food delivered in bread.

He's right. In Italy or France you can get great food anywhere-fresh, local ingredients, served with care very cheaply. In the UK it's either Greggs or somewhere that sells 'artisan' food. That is, roughly the same thing as in Italy but ten times the price and pretension. We have no food culture; the Industrial Revolution destroyed it.

Guys as they chap who first asked you to watch a Sopabox I have to say it's time to watch The Merits of.... and move on. My original hope was to introduce you to Mitchell as an entry to Mitchell & Webb and then on to the truly great things he is in that will also introduce you to other UK comedians, such as WILTY, QI and Taskmaster, oh and of course Eight Out Of Ten Cats Does Countdown. Which i am happy to explain how the name came about and what the format is when you want to watch it.

I think my grandparents ate better than I do. Part of the issue is in those days the woman stayed home most of the day and had time to prep and cook a decent meal. These days everyone works and nobody wants to slave over a cooker for two hours in the evening when they get home.

Oh gosh - there were so many UK specific references in that - I suspect even inattentive UK natives wouldn't get all of it. But I went to university for a reason - so I could sneer at people who had never seen the startling range nor gamut of international cuisine that I had seen thanks to my 'Lifelong University Friends'. A passing relationship with French food, a movie-inspired but shrieking fear of American supermarket food, and a carefully maintained 20m perimeter from roast German pork. Ahhh well. Hey ho. I'm a wee bit pissed now - I mean, not a lot, only 6 cans. But I'll hit the hay shortly. . . . . . . . . . . . . UP THE REBELS (Whoever the phuck those koonts are)
