The fact that you think posing that question is so widespread gives fair insight into how American that kind of enquiry is. No other anglophone culture would think that is even remotely normal lol

I live in Norway, and we don't ask each other how much money we make. This is for the inner circle only to talk about. BUT. This information is readily available publicly for every single individual in Norway. The information are published every year online by the norwegian tax authorities, with only one catch though. In order to access this information you need to identify yourself with official national identity, and the person you are looking up will be informed exactly who looked up this information. These rules were put into place because of the Internet. 1. Don't allow foreigners this information. 2. Don't allow criminals to make a list of who to go for. Mostly it is journalists who access this information, but you can check what your aunt in making too, but she will know that you looked it up, and may wonder why. Not a good move to check up somebody you just met, they may not feel inclined to talk to you agian.

American here. Money discussions were absolutely taboo when I was growin up. Sadly, my parents weren't real good and teaching me money management either. I had no clue how that worked when I first got married. My wife was raised the same way. Thankfully, we managed to survive and figure it out on out own. P.S. I was also raised in a home where the word fart was just as evil and vulgar as the other "f" word. It's now the funniest word I can think of, and I use it often.

Dave's sketch was contrived for its humour content - not that it was particularly funny. I know and have spoken with many, many Americans and the plain truth in my experience is that they are absolutely lovely people. The majority just ask me to talk, say anything, because they like my accent. Those that don't just want to know "so what brings you to ? If I was ever actually asked the question I might simply say: "more than enough to get me here".

We work a lot harder for the answers in the UK, for example "What do you do for a living?" Answer - "I'm a teacher". Brain kicks in - They get good money, and holidays (😉), but if they are a Head of Year or headmaster, they'll earn more, but usually have to have been doing it a while. Next question - "Been doing it long?" Subtle!

I'm English and have a lot of American friends, none of whom have asked me how much I earn. I have visited the US several times, and have never been asked that question. There are snobs everywhere, it's part of the human condition. The one question that Yanks do ask, which if not impolite, is unasked in England: 'do you believe in God'. I always laugh and rely 'yes, of course, heaps of them'.

About the guessing your age thing. I was once knocked out in a cycling accident. The thing you need to know about being unconscious is that as you regain consciousness the first thing to come back is your hearing. I remember hearing the ambulance team discussing my age. (By this point they had spoken to one of my friends or relatives on my phone to get details about me.) "She doesn't look 41. I thought she was older" . At the time I was more concerned about the enormous pain that had started to radiate from my shoulder, but now, years and years later. It's the main thing I remember but it always makes me smile rather than upsets me. I'm not entirely sure why it amused me, but it does :) . They didn't know I'd started to come round.

When I lived in Toronto many many years ago, I was arranging a date with an American woman, and one of the first questions she asked me is "What sort of car do you drive?" .... I lived in down town Toronto, so car ownership would have been more of a pain than an advantage. But that was pretty much the end of it. That said 31 years on I still don't drive a car... don't like em much, I ride a motorcycle.

Oh this definitely happened to him, maybe slightly embellished but he's never given the impression throughout his career (particularly if you've watched him on Would I Lie To You), that he fabricates things. However, it was always my understanding that it's actually considered rather rude to talk about wages in most of the US, or perhaps that is only within the workplace? To prevent other workers from realising they're getting shafted because they don't demand a pay rise as often as others, or ever. But yeah, I am not surprised to find that most Americans would find it as rude to ask that in the first 3 questions of meeting someone as we would. I've never even been asked what I do for work in the first 3 questions of meeting a very drunk person in the pub in the middle of the afternoon.

In Germany, for example, it's often written into your contract that you can't divulge how much you earn to co workers. In Europe people are more interested in you and people tend to never ask that question of others. When you do hear about it, it's people talking about being on a minimum wage. In the US money is important because you need it for everything! Education, health, pensions! Europe is based on more social capitalist ideologies. Sharing some of the wealth creating strong and free education systems and taxed healthcare. Everyone pays into a kitty knowing 'one day' they'll need it!

Which is so smart! Americans struggle to respect and value education. It’s very frustrating. Since it doesn’t pay out to politicians during their term, it’s not important.

@@Jodi_BoringReviews That's such a shame. A highly educated population is the most sensible investment a country can make. Imagine what the US would be like if it followed the Scandinavian's example. Your crime rates would probably lower, especially violent crime and you'd have fewer homeless people. Someone once said, "A civilised society is one that looks after its weakest members and that's what it will be judged on!" I can't remember who said it, but I agree.
@Jodi_BoringReviews

@@kevinporter3212 our country has a lot of problems and that is one of them. We are extremely violent. We have record number of school shootings. It’s so sad. As teachers, we often talk about the Scandinavian countries education as well. Unfortunately, we have a major education/teacher shortage. No one wants to be a teacher in the US. It’s a job with very little pay, no respect, very demanding, overcrowded classrooms, little if any consequence for behavior, and we get yelled at by parents and students quite often. I’ve wanted to move countries for years, but our retirement doesn’t transfer (not even to different cities), so we are stuck unless we want to start all over, and that is asking a lot.
@kevinporter3212
@kevinporter3212 Жыл бұрын
@@Jodi_BoringReviews Yes, we see most of your school shootings on TV. It's terrible. I think teachers everywhere, apart from the Scandinavian countries, are poorly paid and regarded by governments and parents, which is such a shame because only good things can come from an educated society. Yes, starting over can be very hard. I've done it a few times. I suppose if you had Scandinavian style wages it wouldn't be too bad.

I love your channel but your intro is SO much L O U D E R than the actual video, I always panic to turn the volume down before all the shouting wakes up my neighbours - then I have to crank it right back up again because the actual video you are reacting to is often quieter than you. I;d be so grateful if you could have a look at the audio levels on the intro - My neighbours must wonder what the commotion is 'cause I can never get to the volume in time to dip all that shouting at the beginning. A minor irritation but no harm in asking. TBH - I don't actually know what all the shouting at the start is meant to represent - it doesn't seem to fit with the actual content, seems a bit incongruous. There - I;ve said it - Now I;m just waiting for the inevitable backlash from someone informing me I am wrong to dislike extremely loud intro's. But yeah, I like/love your channel apart from that.
