David was trained in the Bel Canto method of opera singing as a Vocal Performance Major at Baylor University. His teachers wanted him to go into Broadway or opera singing, but he felt called to gospel music. This performance was at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham.

Even after 23 years, this live performance of the song is still considered the greatest version by almost everyone that is reacting to it for the first time. His songs wether solo, duet, Gaither Vocal Band that consisted of 4 to 6 voices or with the whole chorus is still outstanding 23 years later. He also has his own group he records with, and he converted his Barn into a Performance Center. Most people are shocked as to why they never heard of this man before. It's mostly because he dedicates most of his time to Contemporary Christian Music. But he does do Classical, Pop and a little Operatic pieces. Try his cover of Witney Houston's "I HAVE NOTHING" and the Righteous Brother's " UNCHAINED MELODY". Then go back and do his many Christian Songs like "WE SHALL BEHOLD HIM", by Dottie Rambo, "THE END OF THE BEGINNING", "FLY AGAIN" that he wrote and arranged and "HELLO BEAUTIFUL". The list goes on and on. A couple versions of the "Star SPANGLED Banner", one with the Vocal Band and another with his own group, with a twist that he arranged on the second verse with the sound of a Led Zeppelin song as back-up ! (Really Clever)

I recommend this one to people, too because it’s so powerful. I would like to recommend something else I really think you would love. The gentleman behind him in red and black is Mark Lowry. They sang together with the Gaither Vocal Band and he wrote Mary Did You Know. The acapella group Voctave features Mark Lowry singing the song he wrote and it is so incredibly moving and beautiful. ❤

I've seen him hold a note for like 18 or 19 seconds before. He's Alive is an Easter song, and he literally makes me gasp for air. The pianist is the late Anthony Burger and is magnificent. He sings Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing which is excellent. I read somewhere that Whitney said he was the best male voice she had ever heard. I have recommended this to several reactors and your the second I've seen this season. I'm happy to see his exposure. David Phelps is a gospel artist and had devoted his voice in praising God. No More Night, End of the Beginning, and Let Freedom Ring are a few of his more popular performances. No video, but he had an album many years ago titled Joy Joy and had a spectacular rendition of Do You Hear What I Hear and Birthday of the King/Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Check him out some more. Sir, when You have time check out that piano player Anthony Burger, His story is so inspiring. Unfortunately, He passed at age 44. Although tragic. He died while playing "And We shall behold "HIM" ... " . His Wifed had said He Himself couldn't have written His Own ending any better than to be playing for and then to enter Heaven to a higher stage.

I may have missed it but I’m sure you’ll enjoy Home Free’s version, it’s excellent. I After that an absolute MUST is the only one that I think rivals David Phelps’ majestic rendition is #Voctave; there version will leave your jaw on the floor. Both sing it with not only great dynamics that draw you in but what makes them extra-special that you picked up on in this one, is that they are singing with awe and reverence in a way that is most than just a wonderful classic Christmas hymn but with a real aspect of personal worship and belief in the lyrics. 🎶🙏
