I can't believe the two of them found one another. How fortunate for the rest of us.

Remember: there's always going to be somebody way better than you, so instead of being jealous and discouraged, love and appreciate what they do. Then go and do your own thing, and someday someone will be jealous of you.

I had the privilege of having him teach me how to play "Purple Haze", when we were growing up. I've also had the privilege of , very briefly playing his 32' Epiphone Olympic that you see in this video. It sounds like no other guitar I've ever played. It's also a bear to play. No BS, I'm his cousin, but I respect him as an influence on my playing as well. Plus, Gillian is one of the nicest people I've ever met. Thanks for posting this, I haven't seen this interview.

thanks, Ive seen them play and met them a few times after the shows. really nice folks. got to see them on the big surprise tour in phily. with old crow, felice brothers, justin townes earle, and they had a older gentleman play organ with them. and all the performers played some songs all together. very cool. heard sweet tooth for the first time there. also my girlfriend i listened to soul journey everyday like a ritual for the entire summer, and longer...it seemed like a revelation to me when that came out. like a new band sound for them. my friends and i would play everything is free... and i was always so haunted by time the revelator ... david seems like a mix of so many friends i have had in different towns. all music players ... very cool sharing thanks

that's awesome, he seems like a really down to earth dude. I'm a big fan. Epiphone came out with a series of reissues from the 30's, including this one, and I found it for $300 at a pawnshop. Obviously not as cool as his original '32, but it's a sweet little guitar.

The review that Dave references around 4:20 is actually one to which I wrote a rebuttal. I had recently seen Dave and Gillian at Largo in Los Angeles. I was still thrumming with musical awe when I read the claim about the guitars being out of tune, and I knew I could not let the comments of a benighted critic stand. I was polite but direct.

I can only hope that one day he and Gillian come over to Western Australia. Between them they have opened up a new world of music to me, much in the same way that Leo Kottke did some years ago. David and Leo often close their eyes and play things that most of us mere mortals can only dream about. The best musicians seem to be the most humble.

David has introduced jazz to country music in a way that makes the instrument capture attention of a listening audience that stands up to Gillian's powerful voice and enhances both artists. Bravo!

That mid-30' Epiphone F-hole arch top is one of those instuments that, like some Stratavarius, has a totally unique sound. In the hands of a genius that is equally uniqe and amazing it is the sound of life itself. Davis Rawlings and the Epiphone. Life and beauty.

Intervals in major and minor 2nds can be hard on the ears, but are essential to help us pass from one mode or theme to another. David = real live guitar hero.

I learned the guitar parts on the first two records by ear, which was a challenge, trying to get the sound, and the inversions of each chord, and where to put the capo. But once you get that the rest is smooth sailing fun.

Interesting that Dave said that the Bandmaster head was meant to be good for steel players. It was my first amp and I bought it in about 1970 from a steel player. (Wish I still had it!). Great interview thanks.

I have always really enjoyed the way David plays, like a cross between banjo, bluegrass and jazz! Those clangy notes and close intervals he plays are a major part of the attraction to his playing, when put with Gillian's playing and singing it somehow sounds just "right". Keep up the good work, now I am really curious to hear what his newer archtop sounds like compared to his old favorite - it will ALL sound like him in the end!

I too remember someone making a comment about the guitar being out of tune. I laughed to myself thing hey bud you might want to spend a little more time getting initiated to the Rawlings Sound. David is not only a genius musician and songwriter he is the King of bending strings and the consummate New Note Finder.

"something like that.. it's just real simple" mhm... simple like ordering pizza simple? I DON*T THINK SO! damn this man, i think he absorbs other people's ability to play guitar by just being around them, leaving them as empty shells with only the ability to strum simple chords... he's the devil I tell ya...
