I'd rather be trapped on a desert island with Rawlings' music than the music of Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Van Halen or just about any other guitarist. Rawlings has truly carved a unique niche in acoustic style. So simple, yet so deceptively difficult. Greatness.

yeah , i loove the notes and at the same time what i like is that when youve played it evaporates in the air... even Guthrie Govan says that speed is byproduct of practising...I like his guitaring but not the fast staccato fusion thangs...my approach is kinda ............i just turned 54 and ive played more or less since 16 ( as a passionate hobby)and i see my pattern : to express my feelings bout whats goin on...( ive written many songs)lately due to hand injury i struggle to keep my strats in e tune octave low, theyre ok! its funny how an old cheap Epi from 20s with new Daddario strings sound: i heard it right away...a biiit harsh even for me, BUT look whos talkin: i have three strats and even tho the b an e strings ringalittlewithout the string tree i play them ( its not so noticeable theyre electric) without the string trees ...! its funny how the heavymetal players play with active pickups compressing almost every human touch, while in real life theres always little sounds goin on indicating that youre alive! hop along taparoo!

dave is an amazing guitar player, his lead work is so mystical, its like he takes you on a journey, while the song plays but he kinda takes these side trips that are so cool, and you get lost following him,but then he brings you back to the song, great stuff......

It gives me such joy in life to "find" a new guitarist that thrills me. Dave Rawlings has been that person for the past six months or so... Found him and Gillian Welch thanks to Tiny Desk Concerts on NPR. he names have been bouncing round my circles for the past decade or so, I guess, but to put concrete sounds to the ephemeris of names is such a blessing...

Same here, more or less... Wanted to find out a bit more about this magnificent guitarist Dave Rawlings, after I 'discovered' Gillian Welch. Whom in turn I found out about through the all-ladies band 'Red Molly' who plays a fantastic version of Gillian's 'Caleb Meyer'. Red Molly I came across just a few months earlier, when 'cruising' KZbin for 'ladies country/folk singers'. And so one thing leads to another, but that ís 'The Way It Goes' on KZbin... Love it ! Downside is only that after hearing Rawlings play, I feel like throwing my guitar in the fire and start a new hobby like collecting stamps or so...

started late at 16 playing guitar, even tho I love dave and Gil, I hate it when some one says that they started late at 16 are 14, are what ever, Hey its never to late to pick up a guitar, I did not start intell I was 30!, my life was just to busy before then. But I have now been playing for 26 years, and I have a lot of fun on my guitar and iam so glade that I can play...So don't ever think you are to old cause your not.

Started picking up a guitar at 12, started playing at 15, played a right-handed guitar "upside-down" (I'm a lefty) and did okay until I was about 37 or 38, when Matt Umanov persuaded me to get one of my righty gitboxes restrung. Then I really started playing! Made a big difference. Dave Rawlings is one of my heroes ... find a live version of him and Gillian Welch playing "Look at Miss Ohio" and watch his solos...

Never too late to start any instrument. We probably have many potential talents in us that we will never discover. I started playing piano informally (no theory or lessons etc.) only two years ago at age 21 after years of guitar playing and it seems I'm already better than I am at guitar. It helps though to have a good understanding of music though if one wants to master an instrument. But learning even some guitar can open to door to other musical instruments. An instrument that is satisfying to play, as in it's sound quality and feel is a huge benefit as well.

Rawlings has the most "crisp" pick attack -- I've never heard a player get that sound from the right hand. Sounds great. // Btw, Martin has a little pre-war archtop like this, an "R-18" -- it's the same size, built the same, and sounds really similar. I had one and LOVED it. Like an idiot, I sold it (for $1K, was worth way more.) These guitars are awesome - comfy and loud as hell. Martin & Co. said they might well have gone under during the wartime, if not for the R-18. Sold tons of them.

Hearing Dave Rawlings play outside his own style for just those few seconds at 6:20 was so great. Completely unsurprising he has great chops outside his own usual playing area. I would be so curious to hear him on another guitar though, not even an electric just like a standard acoustic. I want to know what he would sound like!!
