The Fifth Estate

7 жыл бұрын

Over the years at the fifth estate, we've chronicled our fair share of misdeeds, chased our fair share of scoundrels and con-men. Here's one that stands out for us. Back in 2008, Hana Gartner followed shady bookkeeper David Reiner from Toronto to Uganda. Reiner had vanished after stealing almost a million dollars from twenty-one non-profit daycare centers.

Do NOT let your bookkeeper or financial manager be a signer on your accounts. No matter HOW much you trust them. I was a financial manager at a church, and several times it was brought up that to make things easier, I should be a signer on the accounts. I said "NO" you don't want your bookkeeper as a signer. It's not safe to do that. Not with anyone.

This is what happens when philanthropy becomes an addiction rather than a healthy desire to help others in need. When we don't have the resources to help someone else at a given time, it's OK to step back and take care of self first. It is no longer honorable when you deplete your own resources and start dragging others down to fuel your efforts. He is living pure poetic justice.

I don't think it was ever philanthropy he was addicted to. More the control, manipulation, and duping of others. A lecturer at my old college, a lovely man, whom I had built up a friendship with in college, then became real good friends after I’d finished college, he did something similar. I met him when I was around 20 years old and he was about 50 years old. He was accountant for our local Ex-working man’s club and also for a local rugby club. He gambled, though. A lot. He’s started to “borrow” money, as he put it, to fund his gambling. He eventually got caught. Such a shock and a shame to see this highly respected, retired lecturer plunge to such low depths. It was a major embarrassment to his wife and sons, who are all older than me. I forgave him though. Thankfully so did his family and most of our community. We didn’t report him to the police but made sure he paid everything back. He genuinely believed he was borrowing the money and I believe him. Unfortunately that would have never been possible with his gambling problem. I believe that if he had come into money, he would have paid it back and nobody would have ever known. I’m still friends with him and his family to this day. This guy in the video, though, is pure scum. A con man and a crooked sociopath.

I just thought of a great idea for a new law in Canada. My very own self. Nobody else thought of it. Nobody in Parliament thought of this. The law is this: When a vagrant in a foreign land who is wanted at home for stealing more than a million dollars approaches a Canadian Consulate overseas and wants a plane ticket home to face the music, arrange with an airline to fly him home. The CBC shouldn't have to be the ones rounding these people up. But it does bring up another point. Never say public broadcasting/law enforcement is a total waste of money.

They keep asking why he did it.. Why did Bernie Madoolff do it? Why did Hitler do it? It's the modern western culture we live in. We are taught from childhood to believe that happiness is to be found through financial success, high status, and gain. We are taught to feel guilty for not being good enough, or not working hard enough. Our parents do this to us because they worry about our survival (and because their parents played the same trick on them when they were children). Instead of recognizing that happiness arises from mental health (balance.. as in allowing yourself to feel the ups AND the downs), we forever chase a feeling of excitement that comes from pride when we accomplish what we want.. The problem is, like any high, it is always very temporary and short-lived (and we're taught to repress our negative emotions, to keep them out of the way of gaining what we want.. which only leads to misery, anger, and anxiety). It took me over 15 years to realize this (14 years practicing Zen Buddhism, and the past year listening to Alan Watts lectures.. which cover all of this and more in great detail). I highly recommend Alan Watts to anyone who is confused, unhappy, or simply curious about why our society is the way it is..

As a friendly suggestion for FE, when someone answers “I don’t know” to a question of why they have done something, don’t let them. Try stating that people always have a reason behind their actions, even if it’s not a great one, and then ask them to give their best guess. This works in the mental health field 80 to 90 % of the time, as you can see this on the Dr Phil show when interviewees try to dodge this question and the host takes this approach.

He is indeed sick but justice in my opinion would have been to sit in a Ugandan prison compared to the comforts afforded in the Canadian ones. It's unfortunate that people such as Stephen Lewis, the non-profit daycares and Caring Hands (a deeply moving missionary) among so many others have had their lives affected by someone who's not only a pathological liar, but a sociopath and could care less about children. I can't believe he'd believe anyone, anywhere would be stupid enough to trust him. To embezzle money from your clients is bad enough but in essence he stole from CHILDREN! Then he goes on the lam and tries to steal from children that are more impoverished! He's got balls!!

So, he stole $1,000,000 and used that money before he left Canada? Then he arrived at Africa with little to no money. I teach in Japan and Rwanda and I need at least $1,700 for a plane ticket and accommodation for two weeks (for Rwanda). So, he thought he could live with people for free or did he stash that money someplace else like in an offshore account? Or did he spend it before he left? I’m confused.
@tastx3142

He tried another con a about the ticket. His body language was odd and the unblinking eyes just creepy. I think he expected them to fall for it but they should have left him in Africa to his fate. It would have been better justice. Taking advantage of poor people many in dire straits is reprehensible. Manipulative and taking money even from his 86 year old mother without remorse.

A million bucks is nothing and won't go far these days. In Auckland NZ it costs more than that to buy a run down old 3 bedroom wooden house. In the provincial areas with no jobs a house is at least $300,000.

Ba ha ha...I met a guy like this except he was trust fund I bf y league drop out. He too is a tutor and asks for whatever anyone can afford. Well, he has an unlimited source of $$$ and mother gives him everything too. They get something out of it though, praise and people showing gratitude toward them or being able to get away with stuff or get their way around things- gives them a high. Their minds are constantly working. There is trauma somewhere...like what is the meaning of life? Why do humans do all these? No accountability, no stress, no ties...definition of Freedom in the case of this guy survival but he knows he will always have a meal and a roof above his head and where to rest.
