Had to come back for another listen. What a band. The eulogies are all talking about Dave playing with Bowie and leaving it at that. Fair enough, but what about his influence on generations of sax players, myself included. Then, you have a band like this… and Dave sounding like only he could. When I was coming up, Some guys were saying, “he plays out of tune and he sounds like a duck”. You can’t tell me the guy didn’t have soul coming out of every note. There was a reason why so many wanted to have his style in their bag, even if it was only scratching the surface of the original. Sure, he did his own thing, but it was unique, special, and it kicked ass. RIP, Dave.

Know Sanborn's music in Jazz, sad they don't acknowledge that only speak of his playing with Bowie, most younger folks not exposed to smooth jazz as I was living in a major big city with jazz radio stations, now there's only one from NJ.

I had the opportunity to work with Sanborn in 1988. He was on tour to promote "Chicago Song". Met him at the concert the night before and when he walked into the studio the next day, it was ... Point fingers at each other and laugh. The rest of the day was laying down track ideas that he was getting from the start of the tour. Good horn player but had a little trouble with Canadian beer... Haha

WOW thank you for posting this amazing archive of David Sanborn !!! He's has been one of my biggest influences !!! Him , Kenny Garrett, Phil Woods ... legendary Alto players !
I met David at Red Rocks Ampitheater in Denver. Our light man on tour was also his light man. He got me into the show and backstage. David walked up to me with a smile and said " Who do you play with man?!" And I said "its a Christian Rocker named Steve Taylor" who was quite popular in the 80s. David said " Thats cool man!" Total encouraging and supportive of a younger player. Ill never forget it. Wish I wouldve got a photo. R.I.P.

My first jazz favorite, I was a TOTAL Sanborn fan 18 years old but man I thought he was the greatest. I'm almost 60 and his music moves me to this very day. I read something about him having to be in an iron lung 🫁, when he was younger. What a pair of lungs this man has. Thank you for your music D.S.

God Bless, Mark. He was one of the reasons I wanted to play tenor, (though I was still playing clarinet at the time.) I finished high school in nearby Homestead, FL, Because I'd take clarinet lessons at U of M-- and I was interested in their Studio-Jazz program, it was how I began learning about the legacy of the great saxophonists they produced. I research and listen to as many as I could. Colby blew me away the first time I heard him on a Ferguson album. God Bless him. Thanks for being an early inspiration.

Oooohhh man, this is such great stuff!! A lot of his later live album "Straight to the heart". But this line up... mannnn! Mike Maneiri in his best period..Ricky Lawson (one of the most underrated drummers in drumtalk...he could play anything!!!), Robben Ford also from his Yellowjackets period before playing almost exclusively blues, Marcus Miller..Davids soulmate from this time on.. Neil Larssen..amazing player...jazz with so much soul to it!!!! With the Yellowjackets/almost same line up they performed on this same Montreux festival Casino Lights with Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford on vocals. That album was my introduction to fusion in 1983 being 17 years old and I've been a fan ever since!!!

Actually, Ricky Lawson's career took off into outer space around this time! He of course was great in the Yellow jackets, but got snatched up by Michael Jackson on a few tours. He played with so many great musicians and bands! So, don't think that he was underated!!! He died of an aneurysm in 2013. He was an extremely syncopated drummer!

I saw David In Manchester early 2000's and he was the reason I started playing Sax, it's a strange feeling to meet a person who has influenced your life so much. I turned up early to the concert and just so happen to drive round the back of the Venue and there was Marcus smoking what looked like a spliff! I pushed through to the front right at the end of the gig and he shook my hand, it was very soft and pliable but it was a moment I treasure, his talent didn't rub off on me though!

@Coffee4Closers shame, hope he enjoys playing tho. Sounds concept is in your head and manifestation is in your physical structure, embrochure and diaphragm. Horn make least difference, mouthpieces the most. You can hear sanborns sound change as transitioned from Yamaha to selmer Mk6. Yamaha more ringing sound, selmer fatter.

I lived for David's Heart To Heart album in the mid 70s and took up saxophone and music for a living as a result. (4 ARIA nominations later justified my choice to Mum & Dad). I equally treasured his contributions on Michael Franks' Art Of Tea and Sleeping Gypsy but his solo on Steve Kahn's Little Ones, from the Blue Man record is still is one of the the most life affirming performances ever committed to 'wax'. Here's a rip of it from my 40 year old vinyl copy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn2WZmVoesSemrs

There was a brief time in the early 80’s where David Sanborn played Yamaha horns. It’s mentioned in the credits on his Backstreet album.
