I just love Salerton’s Strauss-Godowsky transcriptions. These recordings are a treasure!

The first Chopin-Godowsky etude starts at 16:12, not 19:25. Saperton's speaking voice is crisp and distinct, but the microphone of his piano playing is poorly placed and muddies the sound beyond the already clotted textures of Godowsky's supersaturated piano writing, with pedaling further gumming up the sound. Saperton's 1940 Godowsky recordings are much drier and clearer, and he sounds more in command in them. Is that Alt Wien at the end of the program? That's Saperton's best performance of this recital. That's sensational, stylish playing. Elsewhere he seems to be struggling at times, but still it's a mammoth accomplishment to play all these pieces in one radio recital without recourse to editing.

1:50 Gamelan 4:58 Chattering Monkeys 6:43 In the Streets (listen to this) 10:18 In the Kraton (and this) 16:12 Chopin-Godowsky Op. 10 no. 6 19:25 Chopin-Godowsky Op. 25 no. 3 Thank you so much for sharing, this is amazing! Saperton makes plenty of mistakes and the mic quality isn’t perfect but who cares, these are maybe the most expressive Godowsky recordings I’ve ever heard. The Java Suite is one of my favorite piano works of all time
