"Dr. D" David Schultz watches himself slap 20/20 reporter John Stossel at Madison Square Garden. Full shoot ➤ TitleMatchNetwork.com
Produced, licensed & distributed by Title Match Media LLC. Enjoy the full "Dr. D" David Schultz shoot interview on our streaming subscription service, TitleMatchNetwork.com.
Back in 1985, 20/20 news reporter John Stossel was doing a long-form story on Vince McMahon, the WWF & the age-old question of "is wrestling fake?".
Now in some rarely before seen footage, David Schultz shows us the raw video that his lawyers gave him during the deposition. It shows what happened moments before Schultz slaps John Stossel and the immediate aftermath.
You will see Iron Sheik, Mr Fuji and even Vince McMahon walk into frame just after the slap heard round the world. It was at this moment that Schultz slaps Stossel across the face stating, "yeah is that fake? That's an open hand slap!".
The slap was met by praise from wrestlers in the locker room but it turned into a legal nightmare for WWF owner Vince McMahon. The promotion would be sued by Stossel and 20/20, leaving McMahon to pay out more than half a million dollars.
Dr. D David Schultz would never truly recover from this incident, though his name was forever etched in infamy. Recently seen on Dark Side of the Ring and other programs reliving the incident, Schultz has undergone another wave of popularity and exposure.

@JorgeTorres-ru6jm

Things took a violent turn when Stossel told Schultz he believed wrestling to be fake, which prompted Schultz to slap Stossel twice in the head. Upon the second slap, Stossel ran off as Schultz continued to yell at him. Because of these events, Schultz got suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission, while John Stossel filed a lawsuit against WWE. Even though it got settled out of court, Schultz joined the ranks of wrestlers fired by WWE, despite claiming WWE management actually wanted him to hit Stossel. No amount of goading Sshultz from Stossel should have turned violent. He deserved to get fired. With that said, anyone that thinks that WWE wrestling at that time was legit need to have their sanity checked. Of course it's all fake. But I still give credit to the wrestlers who put on a great show for their fans. The stuff that they do is amazing.

Schultz shouldn't have slapped Stossel, even if McMahon told him to. It was wrong. That being said, Stossel _was_ trying to provoke some sort of angry reaction from Schultz, because it made for a better interview, and he should have known not to use the word "fake." Professional wrestlers hate that word. It's dismissive of what they do. They put their bodies on the line for the entertainment of the fans. That's not fake. Wrestlers have been injured and killed in the ring. That's not fake. The flying, the hits, the pain, that's not fake. And they've seen guys they know end up with nothing but broken bodies, broken minds and broken spirits when their time in the spotlight has passed. That's definitely not fake. I don't defend what Schultz did, but I understand. For someone to dismiss your life's work as fake is enraging. Even Neil Armstrong once punched a moon landing denier. And I'm pretty sure that Stossel has said to himself, "Man, I really shouldn't have said that to him. That made him mad."
@YouaNumbahOneRacist
@YouaNumbahOneRacist Жыл бұрын
That was Buzz Aldrin that punched the moon landing denier, otherwise, yeah, but the moon landing was real. Stossel's whole schtick is asking hard or crossways questions, that's his _whole thing._ Assault is assault, even in kayfabe. Every wrestler doesn't like it, but every wrestler should expect it, just like MMA fighters should expect the dipshits that call MMA matches sweaty man love, or whatever. You can get angry like a dumbass, or shake your head and i don't know, generate an intellectual response?
@rowdycmoore
@rowdycmoore 11 ай бұрын
See, the problem is people MIGHT at least understand all that IF wrestlers like Shultz didn't keep insisting what they do is exactly the same as other sports when it isn't. If they admit what they do is like the Harlem Globetrotters but with more risk to the body, that's one thing. But to keep saying what they do is like the Dallas Cowboys, THAT'S fraudulent because many people consider pure authentic competition sacred. Pre-determining and fixing the result of a sporting event is the one thing guaranteed to get you permanently banned from that sport. THAT'S what too many people involved with wrestling don't get. There are millions who will respond to this with "If you are putting your body through all this damage for something that isn't a real sport, why can't you have some pride and do that for a real sport like so many others do?"
@gspendlove
@gspendlove 11 ай бұрын
@@rowdycmoore I've watched a lot of wrestling. I've never heard a wrestler, or even heard _of_ a wrestler, "insisting" that professional wrestling is exactly the same as football or baseball or boxing or any other sport. I've never heard one say "it's not scripted, it's all real." (And it's not "predetermining" or "fixing" the results, it's scripted. They work from a script, like actors in a TV show....Wait a minute, I get it! They're not "like" actors in a TV show, they _are_ actors in a TV show! It's not a real competition! It's a TV show, like Star Trek or The Mandalorian or The Twilight Zone. Imagine that!) Maybe you can tell me when and where you heard a professional wrestler "insist" that all of it's real. The overwhelming majority of wrestling fans are aware that these dramatic conflicts we see (say, when Rick Martel "blinded" Jake Roberts with an atomizer so Roberts challenged Martel to a special "blindfold match" and beat him) aren't real conflicts. We're not stupid. It's a scripted TV show and everyone knows it. Again, please point me to the video of a professional wrestler saying in an interview that what he or she does is as real as other sports and that none of it is scripted (and I'm talking about a legitimate interview, not an interview like this one or a wrestler being "interviewed" for a wrestling TV show). You know what wasn't scripted, though? Chris Benoit losing his mind from too many hits in the head and taking his and his family's lives. Owen Hart falling 70 feet from the ceiling into the ring and dying as a result. Those things definitely happened. Your idiotic point is....well, idiotic.
@rowdycmoore
@rowdycmoore 11 ай бұрын
@@gspendlove I have no idea how long you've watched wrestling, but the very definition of "kayfabe" comes from the time when those behind wrestling were in fact doing everything in their abilities to MAKE people think what they were doing was 100 percent competition. Bullshit rules like wrestlers always having to be in character 24/7 and heels/babyfaces never being allowed to be seen together in public. Imagine if Josh Brolin had to be made up as Thanos and not be seen with Chris Evans or Robert Downey Jr for at least all of Avengers Endgame's theatrical run. That's the crap wresters were made to do. You ask for any footage of wrestlers insisting what they do is real - that is LITERALLY what Shultz did with Stossel then. And if that's not enough, I have frequently heard people like Jim Cornette whine that wrestling died once those involved were willing to admit it's a staged show "We're not stupid?" Guess what - people like Cornette, Verne Gagne, Phil Mushnick and the elder Vince J McMahon THOUGHT you were stupid, constantly presenting their act as an actual sport and truly thinking you DID believe it was just like football. And of course no one with an ounce of intelligence really believed that - they made jokes about wrestling being fake on Mork & Mindy for frak's sake! But the people running wrestling up until Vince K McMahon came along DID keep telling people it was real competition and thinking people believed it, and to steal a line from Parks & Recreation: "Okay, but that's worse. You do know why that's worse, right"
