Start with considering the fact that we are evolved biological sensing creatures, products of Earth's processes, just like every other sensing creature. I am only aware of the sliver of physical reality that matters to my body and me, that is the way of life and the reality of every living creature. (Although humans with their amazing learning minds have been able to step outside of themselves - we truly have done incredible things, too bad we failed at wisdom. To understand our consciousness we have to start with the appreciation that awareness and directed action started with the earliest biological cells and evolved from there. The imperative of life. Then the details of human thinking and behaving, and our struggles between the spirit and flesh, it start making more sense.
