They compared them on 'That Pedal Show', and the differences were a lot less than in this case. I think it's something to do with the fact they were in individual true bypass loops through the G2 switcher, rather than in series with each other. The mini will get choked slightly by the additional buffer of the 808, which is not true bypass. Not sure if the mini is true bypass either for that matter.

Good comparison, played well. Interestingly, I would split this test into chords and soloing. Personally I liked the chords better with the TS Mini, because I think the chords are a bit more transparent. The Mini has less emphasized mids. The TS808, on the other hand, brings slightly more meat to the soloing when with more mids and therefore has a more pleasant tone.
@FabianLanfold9 жыл бұрын
They sound very similar, minor differences here and there, Personally I liked the TS808 better, but it's not THAT much of a difference, on a live/gig scenario no one would even note the difference and they both would do the job just right, which says a lot about the TS mini. Also, awesome playing, the first two minutes or so were amazing.

Danish Pete, love your vids and reviews at Andertons, but the issue I have with this particular one is that there was a lot of pickup selection switching when switching between the 2 pedals. Definitely colored the true test of tone for me because it was almost akin to apples to oranges. But like anyone should anyways, I'll check them both out with my rig to see which one works for me. I really like this series. I think it would be helpful if you added a few comments at the end to share your thoughts as someone in the room. It would be great to learn about some of the stuff only you can feel, like touch sensitivity to dynamics, the feeling the knobs & pots have ("These feel really solid for the price") or the perceived feeling of "loudness" that might not actually be decibels into the mic. ...If that makes sense. Your playing sounds great as always.
@homerbunker-simpson27027 жыл бұрын
yeah...I agree with this especially since the vast majority of us are listening on laptops...or even worse, on cell phones! there's no way that minor differences will make it thru all the network digitization, cell tower transmissions and crappy cell phone speakers. your personal opinion as an experience player with ears in the room is important. also agree...you have to do these in bypass loops....a/b....not chained together. put a buffer like a tuner in front and then go to the a/b box.
@yoshiki.g14508 жыл бұрын
Pro has bigger, fuller and warmer tone to it while Mini TS has brighter tone to it adding that chime to its tone overall. They both are great tube overdrive pedals. They have similar tones slightly different. It is just matter of taste and preference to each individual and which tone they prefer actually.

808 sounds more full in the lower range, for sure, less brittle sounding for a smoother more satisfying live solo sound, but as someone stated above - in a mix you'd usually end up removing a lot of that bottom end with EQ anyway.,.,
@gmlasam8 жыл бұрын
Of course the TS808 is going to sound better, because it cost more. Everyone knows that many of us listen with our eyes and wallet because of bragging rights. This goes for all the vintage gear as well. In a blind fold test, you really can't hear the difference. Everyone is going the hear what they want to hear and try to fight tooth and nail to justify it. Now... let the replies begin....... :)

At last, somebody who understands what goes on in a guitarists mind. This thing cost more or is older so it must sound better. LOL. They sound the same because the mini is designed to sound the same or what is the point?
@Kuemmel2348 жыл бұрын
How are opinions like this binary? Yeah sure, a lot of it is price, a lot of it is looks and fame and design and,... . Point is, it doesn't need to be about sound only (although for me personally it mostly is, I'd use a pink ENGL or a yellow Fender Blues Junior if I had to). Older gear is often broken in, it was made with a different set of electronics or it was on a different circuit all around. That alters the sound. That's true even for digital stuff. You have to decide whether you hear the difference or not. We've only heard a mic'd cab, but how do those two compare in the room? I'd love to try that with someone else hitting the switches/turning the gears and me guessing.
@gabopalacios20287 жыл бұрын
The only difference that matters is the "feel" you get from playing it, that's it. The audience can't tell the difference between a Klon Centaur or a cheap TS clon from Joyo
@lylaznboi017 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter how expensive or how old it is, what matters is how you use the damn thing. It's like buying a vintage drum set. Sure, it sounds good, but it doesn't really matter when it gets recorded. The consumer cares about how music sounds as a whole, regardless of what equipment you're using. Not everyone is gonna care about every little detail. Shit, even the Behringer overdrive ain't that bad.

Both fine sounding, both do their TubeScreamer sound to a tee. I have the 808 on my large board and the Mini on my Nano board. When adjusted to comparable settings, the 808 is smoother with slightly less treble, the Mini very slightly harder (modern?) with a little more brightness. With some knob twiddling they can be made to sound almost indistinguishable from each other. There is a remaining tiny difference but in a mix or band situation I very much doubt that it would be distinctively audible. When choosing the sound of the pedal you prefer, it would be personal taste rather than a qualitative decision. The cost saving of the Mini is definitely a factor, as well as size.

My initial take: the 808 has more of a midrange kick, otherwise they're pretty close. Some folks want less of a mid bump…the mini should work better for them. The 808 gives you the expected TS sound.
@ebikes2xs6 күн бұрын
Thanks for sweeping through the knob positions on each pedal instead of assuming setting the knobs in the same position on both pedals is the same. I want to know if the Mini can match the sound of the 808. Yes, vary the knobs to achieve it if possible? One other thing worth mentioning; I don't think the 808 is true bypass and will color the sound of anything after it in the signal. You need 2 separate signal paths like Josh from JHS was showing in a recent video.

yup, great and helpful review. I own an old ts9, that is getting too old to take to clubs. I think Mini TS might be a good replacement because it's going on a pedalboard anyway, power supply and all, so..why not reduce the weight and size and leave the big boy for studio use in the safety of home? Plus today , as my back starts to complain, lighter is always better, and if I don't need to compromise the sound quality its a no brainer. Waiting for this TS mini arriving tomorrow (bought used) - I need to try for myself.

There are pros and cons of each… it’s worth mentioning that the mini has true bypass, and the buffered bypass of the 808 is not terrible but it’s also not great. A TB loop pedal could mitigate this issue, but that would take away even more valuable board real estate. I just sold my 2 TS9s and got 2 minis. The 9s are digital while the 808 and mini are both analog. A bit of whiteout might help you see the dial settings on the mini.

I think I know the answer, but I'm trying to learn the differences between all these overdrive/distortion/booster/fuzz pedals from a technical perspective. Are they all just shades of grey, or really different things?
@cubesandpi4 жыл бұрын
A mix! The signature sound of a tube screamer is generated in the circuit in the box itself, but by increasing the level of the signal you can begin to overdrive the amp as well! That's why you will see a lot of people using a ts as a booster by setting it to really low overdrive and instead cranking the level

What I don't understand is why is it so difficult to turn up the gain AND level knobs to full blast. This is how a lot of us use these pedals for, to get full on scream at non-deafening levels. Isn't that one of the reasons we get these pedals?
