I think your level of talent with woodturning tools, and attention to detail has always been of an extremely high standard which captured my attention and inspired me to learn. However and since you started your woodturning journey I have lost my initial enthusiasm and motivation to watch your videos because of the higher importance you are now placing on being commercially successful. All the laid back music and your skill with turning and capturing the video shots have lost their original magic for me David, and its becoming kinda plastic - that may well be how it is in this world we live in. Just being honest from my point of view.
@DavidAdamsen2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, thank you for your honesty. I think I understand a little of what you're saying, and for the most part you're right... to an extent. Right now, my time is split between this woodturning passion/hobby and a very demanding and stressful full time job. If I am ever able to make woodturning/KZbin my full time business, I need to learn consistency. However, those two things do not come without sacrifice. One example of this was making the decision to remove music from the bulk of each video, focusing on the ASMR aspect instead. Music has always been one of the more controversial aspects of my older videos--some people love it, and some people hate it. About a year ago, I ran a KZbin poll and found that the majority of responders actually like the music but could go without it, and an equal number of people on both extremes would either want more music or no music at all. In contrast, for every comment praising song choices there would be 3 or 4 comments criticizing them, and that is ultimately why I switched to an ASMR focus--to make my videos hopefully more palatable/less controversial to a wider audience. This decision also helped to improve my consistency on KZbin, freeing me from the constant struggle of finding decent music that isn't, as one viewer once described, "kitch". As the saying goes, the medium is the message. I would rather have no music than cheapen the video with bad music. I am also a big fan of ASMR-style woodworking in general, mainly because that type of content is generally simple and free of distraction. In the end, I am simply trying to remain flexible to the platform, making changes that are needed to set myself up for success in an extremely competitive market. I hope that helps clarify a bit. If you'd like to reach out to me personally, email me at david@adamsenwoodcraft.com.

Hi David, I tried copying and pasting your email to reply to you personally but something never worked. So I can only respond to you here for now. All I can say in response to you is that YOU and YOUR skills was what inspired and motivated me to try and become become a woodturner. Not the music (although I found that pleasing), but just the pure mastery and skill you have in bringing the pieces you create to life. That is what inspired me because your talent speaks for itself and in my mind is beyond the need for polls and the opinions of us lesser skilled and gifted as a result. So from my point of view, KZbin etc need you and what you are naturally inclined to create, not the other way round. My best wishes to you

I hope you didn't quit! There are gobs of great turning instructors on KZbin. I've been turning for years and still keep up with many of them. It is rare that I don't learn something. At the very least I am reminded of a technique that I could probably use more often. Cheers!

I know nothing about woodworking but I do admire skill and the dance and movement of wood working is fascinating and calming. The strength of your hands and vision is just mesmerizing and by the way. I hardly listen to the music but I listen to the machines…..adding the music is kin to massage music..lovely ..thank you for your hard work and talent.

As a "Padawan Turner" who can't get enough of these video's: what stands out most to me are those channels put out by "tech" turners who really do turn out impressively complex pieces (and some that don't), compared to artists who see the lathe as a canvas and turn out works of inspired art. David Adamsen is one of those artists, and his works never fail to inspire me.

I know zero about woodturning. I’ve come to these videos drawn by the magic of seeing something magnificent emerging from what some people would consider a piece of firewood. Having been drawn in by that magic I now realise that the real magic, and skill, is in seeing the finished piece in the raw log, understanding what the structure of the timber is and what can be done with it, which bits to remove and which to keep, what shape to create, where to cut and where not to. And then there’s the skill involved in knowing how to do all of the above with a precision that I can only wonder at. You, sir, are a true artist and I now see why your videos have millions of views. Oh yes, and I’ve just subscribed.

First and foremost I consider every piece you turn to be beautiful. This particular piece stands out to me a lot and is a cut above some of your other pieces. I love that you allowed the natural imperfections to stand out. This allowed this piece to be more natural looking and a more rustic look.
