My son's music class was practicing Stevie Wonder Superstitious and he noticed the same chord progression as RHCP Can't Stop. So while the other band members was doing their thing, he broke into Flea's slap bass. It worked so well that they morphed the two songs together for a performance with the singer doing Stevie while the band played Can't Stop. It actually sounded pretty good for a bunch of teenagers.

Another thing that contributes to the modal ambiguity in Blinding Lights/Watermelon Sugar is the avoidance of the F note. While it is technically present in both the Dmin and Amin scales, it plays very very different roles -- in Dmin it's arguably the most important note, and in Amin it's the minor 6th (or 4th in the equivalent Cmaj scale) which means it can only be used as a passing note without actually taking over the scale. If the melody was heavier on F in either song, your ears would automatically complete the Bb note and direct you to the Dmin scale and away form Amin.

I don't know if there's a proper term for the chord progression that the two Red Hot Chili Peppers songs are in (vi-V-iii-IV), but I call it the Maggot Brain Progression. John Frusciante was famously a huge fan of the song "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic, which uses the same progression. Once you learn about that progression, you won't be able to stop unhearing it in other songs; it always tends to make the songs that use it sound very dramatic.

I've been thinking of making a video about the vi-V-iii-IV/Maggot Brain progression, because I find it very interesting how it seems to lend itself so well to dramatic-sounding songs. Like apart from "Maggot Brain" itself and the RHCP songs, some other examples off the top of my head that use the same progression include "Love Is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar, "One Last Time" by Dream Theater, and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by The Supremes (plus its covers by The Vanilla Fudge and Kim Wilde).

This is done with hymns at church. There is a list of which hymns have the same chord progression in the back of the hymnal.
@ForsakenDAemon27 күн бұрын
Hymns aren’t usually categorised by the chord progressions - a “hymn” in Christian music can be used just to refer to the text, with the melody (and harmony) being the “tune”, and they’re then characterised by the meter, often using a numerical code, and you can sing any hymn to any tune with a matching meter. For example, Old 100th is 8.8.8.8 (so four lines with eight syllables each), and often used for All People That On Earth Do Dwell and Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow - but you can also sing these to Tallis’ Canon just as well (which I have mostly used for I believe Now Let Us From This Table Rise).

You played Mr Brightside at weddings? That's a brave move.

For alt rock that’s probably the most common track I play at weddings!

That's an amazing new theory for me! Yes, I know, some songs resemble and often remind you of each other when any one of them is played but why do they really remind, reason is here, it is the common chord progression! It is so amazing that a person can pick and choose 2 completely separate songs, like you did, with a common chord progression even though lyrics, singers and even the tune and sometimes even the tempo is different! I must say, quite an ear.
