Lyrics
Watching them come and go
The Templars and the Saracens
They're travelling the holy land
Opening telegrams
Torture comes and torture goes
Knights who'd give you anything
They bear the cross of Coeur de Leon
Salvation for the mirror blind
But if you pray
All your sins are hooked upon the sky
Pray and the heathen lie will disappear
Prayers they hide the saddest view
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
And your prayers, they break the sky in two
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
Thinking of a different time
Palestine a modern problem
Bounty and your wealth in land
Terror in a best laid plan
Watching them come and go
Tomorrows and the yesterdays
Christians and the unbelievers
Hanging by the cross and nail
But if you pray
All your sins are hooked upon the sky
Pray and the heathen lie will disappear
Prayers the hide the saddest view
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
And your prayers will break the sky in two
(Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

Funny thing, I was at karaoke a couple of days ago and was talking to a guy while another singer's song started. The guy I was talking to jaw dropped and just started saying "no way, no way" I'm like what bro? He's all, "This is a rare deep Bowie cut"(by karaoke standards)And then I realized, I'd never heard the song before. I'm in my 60's and hearing a Bowie song for the 1st time is something I can't truly can't describe. I've listened to the song maybe 50 times now lol

The music blends minors, majors and diminished chords in just the right places... to add that hint of doubt, cynicism, and hope. Add to that the lyrics and you'll spend months digesting the many ways they can be taken. Add in this video and thy brain explodeth. I saw this at first on MTV, a few times. Then spent years trying to find the CD. Once I did it all came back again. Very nice, superb!

BUT IN "LOVING THE ALIEN", THE ALIEN WAS NOT A SUBJECT BUT AN OBJECT WHICH IS THE "ALTER-EGO" OF A SUBJECT, OF COURSE INTHE MATTER WE'RE DEALING, THAT IS "PRAYER" IS THE ALIEN... A GREAT LESSON OF PHILOSOPHY MATCHED TO THE MUSIC... "TRACK" REALLY UNDER RATED BUT FAR AHEAD OUR TIMES WITH MY HEART ON MY SLEEVES CORDIALMENTE GALLO ATOMICO 🐓 MAX66 THE ATOMIC ROOSTER MAX66 ITALY

Along with several others here, this has to be one of Bowie's finest. Tackles religion - specifically Abrahamic religions - mysticism in general, cultural appropriation and empiricism. All in a set co-opted from Dali and Picasso, with Bowie channeling Sinatra. And if that doesn't do it for you, consider: Who else would think "I know, I'll paint me face blue and put a big bright light in me gob so me teeth glow"? Absolutely barking crazy and brilliant, all at the same time.

Lyrics: Watching them come and go The Templars and the Saracens They're traveling the holy land Opening telegrams Torture comes and torture goes Knights who'd give you anything They bear the cross of Coeur de Leon Salvation for the mirror blind But if you pray all your sins are hooked upon the sky Pray and the heathen lie will disappear Prayers they hide the saddest view (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) And your prayers they break the sky in two (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) Thinking of a different time Palestine a modern problem Bounty and your wealth in land Terror in a best-laid plan Watching them come and go Tomorrows and the yesterdays Christians and the unbelievers Hanging by the cross and nail But if you pray all your sins are hooked upon the sky Pray and the heathen lie will disappear Prayers they hide the saddest view (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) And your prayers they break the sky in two (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) You pray til the break of dawn (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien) And you'll believe you're loving the alien (Believing the strangest things, loving the alien)

I think the song is underrated partly because it was from a weak album which even Bowie himself was later very dismissive of. Also, as has been mentioned by others on here, the production is very '80s and that's not to everyone's taste.

This is one of those Bowie moments, where I can see him through the eyes of someone who might have never seen him before. When he runs out in that opening and starts in, I can easily hear someone saying, "Who is this weird guy!" The man is something from another world.

I am very, very grateful, grateful that as a teenager I saw none other than David Bowie as a unique idol. With his musical inspiration, his artistic streak, his intellectual abilities. He made my life very difficult, but it was of high quality and I am proud to be a lifelong admirer of his skills and his person. I was close to him in Hamburg at around 50 cm---- April, 1976. Thin White Duke and the last concert in 2003 shortly before his heart attack, treated in Hamburg, 2004. I don't regret anything. R.I.P.👽💕🎼🎯 my fav song

DAVID BOWIE - THE CHAMELEON OF POP ROCK David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 - 10 January 2016), known professionally as David Bowie (/ˈboʊi/ BOH-ee), was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Bowie was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music. Bowie developed an interest in music from an early age. He studied art, music and design before embarking on a professional career as a musician in 1963. "Space Oddity", released in 1969, was his first top-five entry on the UK Singles Chart. After a period of experimentation, he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era with his flamboyant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The character was spearheaded by the success of Bowie's single "Starman" and album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, which won him widespread popularity. In 1975, Bowie's style shifted towards a sound he characterised as "plastic soul", initially alienating many of his UK fans but garnering him his first major US crossover success with the number-one single "Fame" and the album Young Americans. In 1976, Bowie starred in the cult film The Man Who Fell to Earth and released Station to Station. In 1977, he again changed direction with the electronic-inflected album Low, the first of three collaborations with Brian Eno that came to be known as the "Berlin Trilogy". "Heroes" (1977) and Lodger (1979) followed; each album reached the UK top five and received lasting critical praise. After uneven commercial success in the late 1970s, Bowie had three number-one hits: the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes", its album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), and "Under Pressure" (a 1981 collaboration with Queen). He achieved massive commercial success in the 1980s starting with Let's Dance (1983). Between 1988 and 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with musical styles, including industrial and jungle. He also continued acting; his roles included Major Jack Celliers in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth (1986), Pontius Pilate in The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), among other film and television appearances and cameos. He stopped touring after 2004 and his last live performance was at a charity event in 2006. In 2013, Bowie returned from a decade-long recording hiatus with The Next Day. He remained musically active until his death from liver cancer at his home in New York City. He died two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final album, Blackstar (2016). During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at over 100 million records worldwide, made him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In the UK, he was awarded ten platinum, eleven gold and eight silver album certifications, and released 11 number-one albums. In the US, he received five platinum and nine gold certifications. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Rolling Stone ranked him among the greatest artists in history. As of 2022, Bowie was the best-selling vinyl artist of the 21st century. 👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️And I have the great, great honor of having in my discography eight CD-albums by this great artist, who inspired many other great artists who came after him. From the great chameleon of Pop Rock. I have three copies of the CD-Album LET'S DANCE (REMASTER), whose original edition dates from 1983. And until now it was the biggest commercial success, surpassing ten million units sold worldwide! This is followed by a single copy, also remastered, of the CD-Album TONIGHT (1984), and two units also remastered from the CD-Album BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE, originally published in 1993. And, finally, until now, the fourth CD-Album, and last record work by David Bowie, released one day after his death, in January 2016, BLACKSTAR, two copies for the collection of eight magnificent discographic works, only masterpieces that remained for the history of British and world Pop Rock. And the only number one on the US Billboard 200! Rest in peace, David Bowie! I sincerely miss you so much in this world! You were a great chameleonic artist, and you left an enviable legacy for other artists, and fans until the present day, until forever! Congratulations on your work in music! Thank you very much for inspiration! Thank you very much for your great music! 👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️ Tonight is the 16th studio album by the English singer-songwriter David Bowie, released on 24 September 1984 through EMI America Records. The follow-up to his most commercially successful album Let's Dance, it was written and recorded in mid-1984 at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Canada, following the conclusion of the Serious Moonlight Tour. Bowie, Derek Bramble and Hugh Padgham co-produced the album. Many of the same personnel from Let's Dance and the accompanying tour returned for Tonight, with a few additions. Much of Bowie's creative process was the same as he used on Let's Dance, similarly playing no instruments and offering little creative input to the musicians. The music on Tonight has been characterised as pop, blue-eyed soul, dance and rock. Much of the album's sound is the same as its predecessor's, due to Bowie's effort to retain the new audience that he had recently attracted, although some tracks contain R&B and reggae influences. Devoid of new ideas from touring, Bowie wrote only two new songs himself. Three songs, including the title track, were covers of Iggy Pop songs, who was present during most of the sessions and co-wrote multiple tracks. The title track is a duet with singer Tina Turner. The artwork, featuring Bowie blue-painted against an oil painting backdrop, was designed by Mick Haggerty. Supported by the singles "Blue Jean", "Tonight" and "Loving the Alien", Tonight was a commercial success, reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart. Critical reception was poor, with most finding a lack of creativity. Following the critical dismissal of his next studio album Never Let Me Down (1987), Bowie expressed dissatisfaction with this period, calling Tonight not one of his stronger efforts, a sentiment echoed by later commentators. He did not tour to support the album and only performed "Loving the Alien" and "Blue Jean" on subsequent tours. The album was remastered in 2018 as part of the box set Loving the Alien (1983-1988). 👑💯‼️♥️💯‼️
