I was the cinematographer on this video, as well as the film Absolute Beginners. Julien Temple, whom I met at the National Film and Television school directed the video and the film. It was a hectic time for us & I remain forever grateful to Julien for trusting his film school friend to shoot with him for more than 10 years. This is one of my favourite pieces of work - one of the rare opportunities I got to shoot black and white which I absolutely love: we went on to make "Jazzin for Blue Jean" with David who was the one of the greatest musicians and human beings I ever met back in those heady 80's days. Nice to see it immortalised on uTube with a decent copy of the original..

Back in 1985 I was staying in a youth hostel in London near where the cafe that is used starting at 3:16 of the video. I just happened to go out for a night walk and saw some bright lights near the cafe and David Bowie and the Zebra lady were working on the video. Between takes he came over to a few of us and talked for a few minutes. He was a very cool guy. When the director called him over he said "Sorry guys, I've got to go". He gave me a couple of autographs. I have old slide photos somewhere that I took while the video was being made. It was a very cool experience and now a nice memory.

Oh, absolutely. There's a whole generation who were introduced to Bowie in the 80s, but the decade was actually the most creatively stagnant part of his career (That's not meant as an insult. I've long said Bowie at his worst is still better than the rest at their best.) But between the drugs and making songs for an audience he couldn't really read, his creativity kind of atrophied. And when the 90s came, he either would have died or retired. But fortunately for him (and us) he met Iman. He got clean for her, and she encouraged him to experiment again, which led to a career renaissance. I think it's kinda funny how he cried when he wrote this, because it was almost kind of a prophecy about Iman. Imagine pouring you heart and soul into a love song about someone you think doesn't exist... and then meeting them.

Well a long over due Happy New Year to you 🎉 …Absolute Beginner’s is definitely a cool song to wring in the new year (especially with the epic sax bridge , that sadly isn’t used like it was back in the day) on my channel my 1st song pick played of the year was Dazzle by Siousxie and the Banshees.

Bowies music has been a big part of helping me recover memories I’ve repressed or lost from my concussion. I hear one of the songs I used to use to cope and suddenly I can remember everything. His music is amazing and has always been there for me in my life. RIP to the man who sold the world and bought our hearts with the cash.
