Dave you can get a large wheel deer cart to use to haul your trapping stuff I used to haul it in in back pack, buckets and large shoulder type travel bags by the end of the trap line I was Spent. Using the deer cart has been a godsend the large wheel type roll over logs and such easily and they can haul some serious gear in. hope this helps you Brother love the info you provide here on YT

Dave, you always make me feel like I'm right next to you in your videos. I think it's the way you talk to the viewers. You always say "we" and "us" like your talking to someone who's next to you. I love it! Especially these trapping videos. I'm very excited for the winter trapping vids! And all the other vids you will be posting! Thank you for all the knowledge you give us! Great stuff brother!

I was never really into trapping before. Just thought it was a little boring, but I have to tell you Dave, this has really sparked a massive interest in it for me. I love these videos! You make them not only extremely interesting, but informative and educational. You are also showing the ethical ways of doing it by releasing non-target animals. You are awesome Dave! I can't wait to get out and try this myself with some dirt time!

Thank you Dave for posting these educational videos on this often controversial subject. I have found this series as interesting as the journal of the yurt! I also commend you for your comments on the young man and how he handled dispatching the animal during his video. Taking any life should not be taken in such a manner and true sportsman/woodsman are thankful and respectful of the animal's sacrifice. Always a class act sir!

Dave, I for one greatly appreciate your hard work. I know next to nothing about trapping, so I'm eager to watch all the videos you can make on this subject, I'm making notes and just ordered 6 of your Bobcat snares. I haven't seen or heard of a bobcat around here in ages, but I'm hoping they'll be the right size for the over abundance of raccoons and possums we do have.

Nice video. An advice. Whenever I kill a birds I pluck them and drop a few dozen of the small feathers on my trap so that it looks like there has been a kill in the area. I don't know if its a good idea when you use a foothold trap. I've only done it with conibear traps. I also use a needle and attach a big feather to a long stick with a rope so that it blows in the wind. In an open area you'll see it even if you're a couple hundred yards away. Good luck! Looking forward to see them produce

This what I do to bring the coyotes in to where my pan is. Make the backing higher. At least 6 inches so he cant work it from the back. Use a good skunky lure on your backing and a good meat based bait in your hole. The higher backing will bring him in farther. Cool trick with the squirrel tail. I wish we could do it here!

seems like (especially with that trap that the fox was near) you should bring the trap a slighty back because the are able to stand close enough and their neck is long enough to put their nose in the whole without having to take that one last step in your pan. I found a guy on youtube that has really good success with mink and muskrat he explains his sets and shows his success thought of you his youtube name is bigtimebowfishing really great ideas, good luck Dave

I like your sets! I was taught to use lures above their heads... ever tried it? Really enjoying the series! Thanks for posting it! I'll be watching!
@flamedrag1812 жыл бұрын
the fox footprints are a example of why you back your trap up from the dirthole opening about 8", since a fox or coyote will stretch their neck out to look down a hole instead of getting their nose in there. the 8" would also lessen the by-catch since oppossum and raccoon aren't concerned with the chaff and will go straight for the hole, possibly by passing the trap entirely and their scent might even attract the canines. just my opinion.

Dave I think you should use a small wisk broom to clean off your pans instead of blowing them off to me that seems like your really putting a human scent on the trap.
@jerrylake61110 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave was just thinking that maybe you could forge something yourself that you could slide down over the top of those spreading ears or whatever you called them on the smaller traps to give you some more leverage when trying to load them. It seems to be quite hard to open them up judging by what you showed in your videos. Just a thought I had since your good at making things with your black smithing skills. You know something to kind of slide down on each one that is a little bigger than needed at first and gets tighter as you go so to be able to fit any size of the different brands of traps. You only two one for each side and they should last forever once ya had them made. Just a thought .. Jerry from CT

Dave, you mentioned getting a horse to pack your gear with, but a long time ago you were experimenting with a pack goat. How did that experiment ever work out? Would a pack goat be useful in your current situation, or are they not strong enough to carry a trapper's load?

Dave you are making the same mistake I made when I started trapping coyotes and that's trapping a coyote as if it were a fox. Coyote doesn't pee at a food set opportunity. To be honest neither do fox. Trappers of old use to pour pee all over their sets as a suspicion removal but it really was a marketing tool to sale more urine to trappers. Try this use food odors and food lure in your dirt hole sets and use urine and gland lure at your post sets and you will start catching more animals.

Hi. i'm completely new to the trapping scene. how do these animals die? i mean do the traps just hold them in place until you get back to them to kill them? letting them starve would be rather cruel i think and as far as i can tell you are not the type of guy who would unnecessarily harm anything.
@Outdoorsman151512 жыл бұрын
im with dave on this one...how do you know that he was without pain?
@ArtemiaSalina12 жыл бұрын
I think it's largely a myth that animals (including coyotes) are afraid of human scent. People often see coyotes and other animals in residential areas, which are loaded with human scent. It may be possible that animals will come to associate human scent with danger in areas with heavy hunting pressure, but even that is unlikely since the animals that encounter hunters wind up dead more often than not. Unless you urinate on your sets I think it's mostly an overstated issue.

Dave, Any particular reason you're targeting Coyotes (sorry if you over viewed that already in another video). Meat, Skin, Nuisance? As always, fantastic videos. You can't get this stuff on normal TV.
@snyper06911 жыл бұрын
Your sets would make good bobcat sets because they are very "showy." Coyotes are neophobic and don't like change in their environment. It may take a while for them to come into a showy set, but if the smells are good enough they will eventually once they become used to it. Also try putting your urine in a line along one side of the hole. That will cause then to have to step closer to smell it and thus into your trap. Fogging the area most often causes them to pee farther out. Keep the faith!
@Jaybird19612 жыл бұрын

Show some respect. Use this as a opportunity to learn from an elder in the field, and less of a chance to argue a point. That shows more manhood than arguing with someone who has proven himself for many years in the woodsman, trapping, and armed service of our Country.
