I like that you explained the difference between synthesized pharmeceuticals vs. the natural state of the herb with all of its chemical constituents in tact. Well done and informative.

When Rufus poked his head into the shot, I suddenly had a thought: I wonder if you could train your pooch to find and retrieve medicines in the field? Like if you were partially immobilized from injury or sickness. He could even have it partially masticated when he brings it to you! Anyways, thanks for being a great instructor Dave, and for another great knowledge share. I am ecstatic when I look around my little patch of wilderness and see so many of the medicines from your series...they are literally everywhere.

Dave, thanks for putting this series on materia medica together. What a great idea! I have several herbal books from writers like Matthew Wood, Maria Treben, and others, but your videos make so much more sense. I learn better this way. A good teacher makes his/her students believe they can do what they just learned... you are doing exactly that. Keep up the great work! I appreciate what you are doing.

BTW, Dave, Survival Lilly recommends your books and has them on her Amazon ordering page. I just bought your Bushcraft 101, Expert, and Trapping guides for my collection and knowledge. I can't wait to get them. I live just north of Pittsburgh, PA and often wondered if there you have a school for Bushcraft. I'd love to take some courses in it someday where they offer such a thing.

The word drug is from the term..Dry Good/Dried Good. As in a Dry Goods Mercantile Store. Drying your plants for processing, storage and shipping. The term became drug...because of shorthand clerking. A dry weight of measure...coffee / sugar / tea / wheat...etc. Are Dry Goods known as schedule 3....The correct term Food and Dry Goods Administration Makes more sense...dont it? My Great Grandfather was a merchant marine and a physician and specialized in Dry Goods...with the US Army during the Smithton Land Company dispatch during the Northwest Ordinance and Louisiana Purchase.

Would it matter if you mashed the tops after cutting them? Wouldn't that expose even more surface area?
@DavidCanterbury8 жыл бұрын
I would not do that, you are most likely to just loose liquid into the Mortis and Pestle that need to be in the medical, grinding is for dry components, would you grind the vegetables you put in your stew? Same principle, seasonings are ground, veggies chopped
@Cetok018 жыл бұрын
OK, thanks. Keep up the great work.

+wildernessoutfitters would this be good for a sinus infection type issue?
@Atkrdu8 жыл бұрын
Dave- would you get into the particulars of using a mortis & pestle? It seems there's a bunch of stuff that could make a difference. Mulching up a bunch of different plants maybe having an effect on the medicinal, what to seal it with, how to know if that went bad, etc... .
@VRCM_Skywarn_XUSA8 жыл бұрын
+Cetok01 Bruising....u said mash....it's called bruising. You basically brake it...and then steep it....strain it...cool it...drink it. Over a period of time...to hydrate...intake nutrients....and flush out the unwanted critters.

+Urban Survivalcraft I'm taking notes on all of the suggestions. It is actually my brothers friend that has the lyme disease and I'm researching to help. I have to wonder if the plants Dave mentioned would work for other diseases that cause pain. My other brother's girlfriend has rheumatoid arthritis and I see that the Teasel Root tincture has cured other people from lyme, I wonder if it would have an effect on arthritis. If you know of anything that combats, alleviates, remedies or cures rheumatoid arthritis, I would sure appreciate the info. Thank you for the book suggestion. I'll look into it.

@jenniferbeach61668 жыл бұрын
I would like to know this as well. Dave, please advise. Thanks!
@treedirt100008 жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes. Better off just extracting it down to an essential oil, stored in a dropper and added as needed. For more of a woodsman's approach you could just take a mason jar, add plant material, add grain alcohol 70-80% such as vodka or moon shine, let it sit and shake often, adding more alcohol as it evaporates. Keep in a dry, dark, cool place and allow 6-8 weeks for it to fully extract. Filter it, store it again in dark, dry, cool place and it should last years. I'm sure you can find numerous recipes online. But like I said if you have a still or the means to get one, essential oils are the way to go in my opinion.
